"...Five times before." refers to the five original Universal Frankenstein movies. 1. Frankenstein; 2, Bride of Frankenstein; 3. Son of Frankenstein; 4. Ghost of Frankenstein; and 5. Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Brooks uses elements from all five in this genius level parody.

Oh yes, I saw in the opening credits that they used the same props as the 1931 movie. Can't believe the props still look good! I did mention it when I saw the opening credits (that part was edited out in my RU-vid Version, but it's there in my full reaction on Patreon).
The reason for the picture quickly cutting to black after the espresso line is because Gene Hackman ad-libbed that line and the whole crew did burst out in hysterical laughter. They tried to do other takes on that line but it was impossible without laughing so they did stick with the orginal line.
Everything about this film was a reference to the 1930's horror film genre. For example Frau Blucher was supposed to forebode things to come or the hair change on Madeline was referring to the sequel Bride of Frankenstein. Everything that wasn't an outright joke (like the mothers on the two trains lamenting the masturbatory issues with their sons) was a reference to classic Black & White films. The smokey train tracks, the misty cart ride through the forest to the intimidating castle on a mountaintop. All of the things you think were simple background was Mel pulling scenes from Film Noir of the 30's & 40's. Both he and Woody Allen pulled clips and tricks from that era. By the way I want to compliment you on the unintrusive way you are adding commentary in scenes in print. Your page is delightful and I hope you keep it up. Do continue with the Brooks line of reactions but if I may suggest one great movie that No One reviews it would be Pocketful of Miracles. It is set in Prohibition era New York and has a Golden Era cast ranging from Bette Davis to Ann Margret (all Oscar Award Winners) There are other Classics I'd recommend but you will find things like Guess Who's Coming To Dinner and others soon enough.

This movie is actually a Parody of the classic Universal Monster movies of the 1930s and 40s. Which is why it's filmed in B&W. you need to watch FRANKENSTEIN ( 1931 ), BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN ( 1935 ) and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN ( 1939 ) in order to understand all of the jokes and references.
One reference I have not seen any reactor catch is the exchange between Fredrick and the shoeshine boy at the train station. With the exception two words (Transylvania Station), their dialog is a lyric from the old song "Chattanooga Choo-Choo."
Yes, that is Lily Von Shtupp and the minister from Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks often reused favorite actors. I loved those illustrated classics as I kid. I had a bunch: my favorites were A Tale of Two Cities, The Scarlet Letter and a five Poe stories. (I reread Masque of the Red Death during the pandemic.)
I wasn't too sure about the minister. He somehow looked younger in Blazing Saddles! 😂 (Must be the colour) The illustrated classics are great, it's fun to read and look at the illustrations (they're very well drawn).
You would have understood more if you had watched the original Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein before watching Young Frankenstein as this movie is more a homage to the Frankenstein films than a parody. Many of the scenes are duplicated with a twist and the hair change is explained from Bride (as well as the beehive and hiss).
Madeline is delightful. I was 17 when I saw this in the theater and, of course, went to my German teacher and asked him if "Schwanzstucker" was correct. Us kids were repeating lines from Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein constantly for at least a couple years. Now that you've reviewed your first black & white movie, please give "Psycho" a try. Ixnay on the Ottenray is Nix on the Rotten in pig-latin, which we used to speak frequently in the 60's.
