Back in the glorious 90s, George Lucas created "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" later titled "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones" The show received mixed ratings from audiences and critics, there were several problems with the show but it seems like in recent years people have warmed up to the show and are looking back on it with fond memories. So is this a case of nostalgia taking over or is there more to this show than meets the eye? In this video I'll be taking a deeper look at this forgotten relic of Indiana Jones history to find out if it's actually as good as people remember or if it's just as bad as people thought it was.

The reason I have "First or second half" at the end of some episodes is because I'm listing the HD repackaged episodes, they're basically hour and a half long movies made up of two episodes each, so I'm listing which half of the episodes you should watch. If there isn't a "First or second half" then that mean the whole episode is worth watching. There are some other episodes that I haven't seen in a while so I'll update the list if there are any other episodes worth watching.

I can’t believe these people are still spouting this nonsense about the prequels being bad. George Lucas is a better writer, filmmaker and creator than you’ll ever be dude .

Star Wars fans need to face the facts, the Prequels are NOT good movies. The Prequels are fondly remembered for the fun moments, characters and stories, BUT even though they are *fun* movies they are not *Good* movies. They are not well put together and even though there are very interesting characters and stories in them, those are not well executed at all. This show is a perfect example as to why George Lucas is not a good filmmaker when he's not collaborating with anyone. The only reason the Original Trilogy was as good as it was, was because Lucas had people helping him and telling him what would and wouldn't work. When Lucas made the prequels, he didn't have anyone telling him what should and shouldn't be done to best execute his visions, that's why the prequels had so many good ideas that weren't fully realized. When Lucas made Clone Wars, Dave Filoni was there to fix many of the problems with the Prequels, he was also responsible for Clone Wars being the best Star Wars show ever made. When Lucas came up with the ideas for Indiana Jones, he needed Spielberg to help execute his visions and ideas for the franchise, that's why Raiders became one of the greatest films ever made, because of that collaboration. When Lucas made Young Indy, he didn't have someone like Spielberg or Filoni guiding him on how to make the show, because of this it had several problems and was nowhere near as good as it could have been.

Indy mentioned riding with Pancho Villa in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was a nice bit of continuity with the show.

I love 90-year-old Indy, what a great performance by George Hall, and I agree about it adding the educational context the episodes need. There's also an episode where Indiana Jones fights Dracula at his castle during WWI, but the Old Indy bookends reveal it was just a made up story to scare trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Without George Hall to let us in on the joke, that episode is very silly and doesn't really work.

George Lucas wanted this show to teach kids about historical people. Thats why George Gershwin and Irving Berlin are in the Broadway ones and Irving Thalberg and John Ford and in the Hollywood one.

Some of them are well done and make sense, but others feel way too forced. Indy somehow meets Von Stroheim and John Ford, how does he meet them? by travelling to Hollywood and starring in a big budget movie. It just feels to goofy and forced.

I gotta say, the soundtrack is a nostalgia trip innit of itself. I never actually grew up watching it, but I did play the Lego games which had pulled various tracks from Young Indy in a lot of the levels.

Attack of the Hawkmen and Treasure of the Peacock's Eye are the two best one's in my own opinion, they're my personal favorites. There were also some other episodes that were pretty cool too. I've always thought that the Young Indy series was kind of underrated.

Nothing against Sean Patrick Flannery, but River Phoenix was the PERFECT Young Indy, I think the show would have been better if he was in it. Even though I like River Phoenix's take on Indy more, I've actually grown to like Sean Patrick Flannery's take on Young Indy a little more.

It's worth noting that Old Indy is 94 in the show, and 70 in Dial of Destiny. There's still time for him to lose an eye and find out about a daughter. Thanks for the video, it was fun to watch.

Look at it in context. You sound pretty young, so keep in mind that this is BEFORE HBO and Netflix. This was regular television. Very very high tech and historical for the time. It is showing us how he became who he is, not just a bunch of archeology/adventure movies made for TV. You also couldnt ever have violence or sex on television, so it was bound to be more mellow.

I was a huge Indiana Jones fan and when The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles came out I did enjoy it but I admit it wasn't a blast. It was good but not great and most of its charm was in the main character's appeal. Anyway I still remember that episode starring Elizabeth Hurley.

A Young Indiana Jones reboot could feasibly work in my opinion. But they need to focus more on the adventuring side of things. An opportunity to see a young Indy and young Sallah meeting and interacting with each other, building their friendship would honestly be really nice to see. Maybe fleshing out lesser known areas of Indy’s character such as his mentorship under Abner Ravenwood, and his rivalry with Belloq. Basically acting as a soft reboot of the original show. Fixing the issues that the original show while keeping what worked. But knowing Disney, they’d probably find a way to fuck it up.

I think if that was the only relationship in the show (since it was the only one that kind of worked) then I think it would have been fine as 1 romantic episode in the show. But aside from her EVERY other love interest has no dept of any kind.

Great video! I’m introducing my friend to the show since he loves Indiana Jones and we just completed a marathon of the movies. I saw most of the episodes as a kid on VHS with my dad and we got them on DVD back when they came out. I’m into spy thrillers like James Bond and Mafia/gangster movies as well. That’s why I like Mystery of the Blues (especially the second half) and the episodes where he’s working as a spy. One thing you have to remember is that James Bond was one of the many characters who inspired Spielberg and Lucas to make the movies, so having episodes where he’s working as a spy and doing detective work feels like an ode to Bond. I also agree with you on the continuity with the show and how it connects with the movies. When my friend and I saw the second half of the first episode, it gave me an idea of what was going through Indy’s head in Temple of Doom when he sees the kidnapped kids working as slaves. Since he and Omar were kidnapped to be sold as slaves, it makes the Temple of Doom scene better because we know Indy was in the kids’ shoes at one point. Speaking of Omar, is he the same Omar Indy mentions before the truck scene in Raiders? I also would’ve loved to see an episode with Belloq and the Ravenwoods. Again, thank for making this video and giving your opinion.

First time watcher! I don’t really agree with all the negative opinion commentary about the show but I respect the video. The Young Indiana Jones films aren’t really meant to be just like the films. He isn’t the Indy we know and love yet…but he picks up a little of who he eventually becomes along the way as the series progresses. I would also argue that all those relationships (and keep in mind the entire series was filmed over many years) makes Indy pretty flippant and resentful about women…so by the time he meets Marion Ravenwood all those toxic relationships have tainted any attempt at true romantic love he might have had. “Spring Break Adventure”, “Mystery of the Blues” and “Oganga: The Giver and Taker of Life” are my favorites and I recommend them. Sad that the actor who played Remy is no longer with us and he was a pivotal role in Indy’s life and his adventures in WW1. I’d give the entire series another viewing and there’s neat connections with other episodes and the films you’ll catch.

I think one of the main problems with this show is that the majority of historical figures Indy meets have nothing to do with archaeology or adventure. I mean, how could possibly Pablo Picasso Norman Rockwell, Puccini, Kafka, etc. Have influenced Indy 's career? Lawrence of Arabia was a soldier and archaeologist, so it makes perfect sense for Indy to know him. Same with Roosevelt and all the hunting stuff, because it ' s about nature and survival. And even there are some characters related to archaeology that Indy only meets once, like Gertrude Bell, and she was an archaeologist. Indy could spent some time with her in the years after the war, learning about the cultures from Near East. Another character Indy should have meet was Percy Fawcett, who was too archaeologist and soldier, and a believer in the supernatural (the lost city of Z in Brasil obviously inspired Kotcs, so instead of Orellana, Indy and Mutt should have searched for Fawcett) Hiram Bingham was another character he could have meet. Anyway, i think the last three movies should've been about adventure and archaeology, and not about jazz, mafia, or Hollywood. This was a great show, with excellent ideas, but badly executed. By the way; was Marcus going to appear in this show? And who was the actor who was going to portray him?

Let's put it this way, there'll finally be an original airing benchmark to base future restorations off of (also, it looks pretty good, as is). With a few edits and custom restorations, I've been able to make a very complete example of the original airing. Mostly with original commercials... Anyway, it is coming.

In the Young Indy Chronicles he was in the episode "British East Africa 1909" In the repackaged episodes he was in the first half of the episode "Passion For Life" Both are the same episode there's just two versions of it.

Yes River Phoenix passed away while the show was being produced. River Phoenix died on sidewalk in front of Johnny Debbs nightclub the Viper room in october 1993 of a drug overdose. He had taken what is known as speedball, a mix of heroine and cocaine . His Sister Rain Phoenix and his Brother Joaquin was with him. When he died. An ambulance was called . But it to late to save his life. He was 23 years old. When he died

Disney learning from past mistakes. Sure. Old Indy was cringe. Him pestering people on the street with his stories and having a grandson called Spike and acting all confused, nobody believing him and thinking he was senile, while the whole thing looked like it was shot and lit like a Boy Meets World episode. It was a good thing it was cut.

Turns out they did offer River Phoenix the role of Young Indy but he declined it, I personally didn't mind Sean Patrick Flannery and for the most part I enjoyed all episodes with him, except for The Scandal of 1920, that was a definite miss.

I own all three seasons on DVD and I personally think the best season was season three’ THE WAR YEARS’ I know quite a few people are always wondering what it was like back then in the war and when some soldiers weren’t fighting and I personally think this season gave a lot of people quite a good idea of of what it might have been’🤔 I also think the box art that they went with looks really good and fits the idea of the show perfectly’

Just listened to the soundtrack to this, and it got remembering an episode I really enjoyed when it aired- turned out to be The Scandal of 1920, which you cover quite a bit here. You say that some of that stuff is not Indiana Jones- I disagree, I think that having him in a lighter adventure of putting on an early Broadway show with George Gershwin really opens up the possibility of what the character can be, and the format was like a small movie, where at least in that episode all the elements worked. Just a great plot, especially for a TV show, and the educational angle gives just a taste of some historical figures without it getting in the way of the story. Before Forest Gump, there was this. Getting into your review- you seem to understand that you don't like things, but have a harder time articulating why. Or when you do, I think you're wrong, for example the writers were not trying to send a message to the actor that he's no Harrison Ford by having the 3 women dump him at the end of the episode. It was a comic situation like the kind Indiana Jones finds himself in, but you took it seriously. Also do we need to see Marian and Bellok as kids in 1921? Didn't we see them in 1957? Why not have them all playing in a sandbox as babies? Nor do we need him to treasure hunting every episode, imagine 40 episodes of what, a different treasure hunt, how lame that would be. And imagine River Phoenix doing the show and then dying in 1993- there certainly would be no Season 3. Tonally, it's kind of difficult because your voice is already an irritant and then the whining about everything you didn't like, I'd say not to complain so much, but if you must, try not to sound as whiny I guess?
