Part Eight (Finale) of "Why Won't Indy Convert?"
By “convert” we really just meant “be changed in some significant way.” A guy like Indy might very well be at a loss about how to process what he’s seen, about how to incorporate these tremendous new experiences into his lifestyle or outlook...but surely he won’t just go right back to scoffing about “bedtime stories” or waxing dogmatic about “not believing in magic.”
We just think that his mind needed to have been opened a bit more-a lot more, in fact-for his character to make sense within the dramatics of the story. But later writers on the series don’t seem to have seen it that way...
Wonder why not?
Well, this is the answer we’re after in this final episode-and we hope you’ll stick with us for the solution to this fascinating puzzle.
TAGS: Christian nerds geeks, Indiana Jones, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ark of the Covenant, origins of Raiders, religious artifacts, Marcus Brody.

A good example of something like this done right is The Iron Man Series - Tony gets a look into the larger universe, with aliens and powers that could crush The Earth with a thought, and he goes through an existential crisis. Indy sees these wonders and just wakes up, puts his pants on and goes about his day.

Convert to what? He was already religious. He held the literal cup of Christ in his hand. He told Marion to close her eyes because he rightly feared the power of God. If he didn't believe he would have looked.

I hadn't thought of it yeah, it's possible Indiana Joes is religious but just doesn't talk about it.

Yes, we conceded that Indy seems impressed by what he witnesses (cup of Christ and so forth)...but for some reason he's always right back on his skeptic routine again at the start of each successive episode: "Just a bedtime story..." "a lot of superstitious hocus pocus..." "the Boogie Man." It doesn't make sense as *drama*. Anyway, you might want to look back at the first episode in this series (this was the finale)--to get a better sense of what we're getting at.

@@thepopcorncathedral You have to remember. indiana is a scientist first and formost, Being sceptical is a part of the job. That doesn't mean he's a non believer. He's just not going to jump the gun. that doesn'y mean he doesn't have faith at all.

@@gundamleviathan5760 I see what you, mean, of course. But man...that was a lot of miracles. ;-) A scientist must *start out* skeptical, sure. Doesn't mean he or she can't draw any conclusions at all about what they've seen, if only personal conclusions separate from their professional task. Many of the greatest scientists of history have reached positive conclusions about various religious tenets. Here's a helpful piece: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relationship_between_religion_and_science

Indy also refers to the Biblical stories as "bedtime stories," making it seem as though he views them as legends or fairy tales

Thanks for all the comments, gang. But do watch the video beforehand, please. :-)

Thanks for that fellas. I never really though about it that much but it is a valid question. Maybe you can help me with a problem. I seen Raiders in the cinema about 25 time back in '81and I never had a problem with Indy telling Marion to shut her eyes and don't look at it. I've seen so many posts over the years from people wondering how did Indy know not to look. I was just 13 back then and thought about Lot's wife being turned into a pillar of salt for looking at God's work. It made perfect sense to me. Did Indy remember that simple warning from Sunday school like I did or have I missed the point completely? What's your take on it? Was Indy thinking about Sodom and Gomorrah?

Thanks for the comment, gecko. I'd advise taking a look at our previous episode, "Could the Lost Ark Really..." where we talked about that directly. In fact, to really understand our points in this latest, all seven previous episodes would be helpful...

Indiana Jones is a scientist.

We're not asking if a scientist should adopt a religion, friend. We're asking why a fictional scientist who sees fictional (but undeniable) miracles within the context of a piece of fiction, makes dramatic sense if he's right back where he started at the end of every adventure. And we're *definitely* not saying anybody has an obligation to convert because they saw fictional miracles in a movie. :-)

Just remember he has dealt with another religion having evidence for its legitimacy.

Right. We didn't get specific about where he ought to land. It's an *open mind* Indy needed to convert to...and didn't. As you say, he saw strong evidences of real magic (both good and bad) among the Hindus...and yet at the start of the next story we hear him scoff at Marcus' warnings about the power of the Ark as a bunch of "hocus pocus...about the Boogie Man." Hope you saw that we dealt with all this in previous episodes...

Could the answer be bad writing, and bad writers protecting their own prejudice?

It sounds like a commercial, I know, Bat, but go back and watch the previous videos. The whole series is us giving our own theory about what happened... :-)

If that's not what you meant, then it was a bad choice of words to use convert. Transform would have been a better word choice.

Sort of. I'd say subsequent writers after Kasdan were presented with an unsolvable dilemma, really. Do watch the video (or all 8) if you haven't! And thanks for the comment.

@@thepopcorncathedral It just seems too unbelievable that he'd remain skeptical of the existence of the supernatural after personally witnessing it first hand in such spectacular and unambiguous fashion.
