The only loss of the 1984 49ers. They went 15-1 and won the super bowl. Crazy to think they were that close of 19-0

The 1984, 1989 49er teams were juggernauts. Rice wasn't there for the 1984 campaign but they dominated anyway. The 1990 49ers were a juggernaut but Montana got killed in the NFC Championship. If he dint get hurt they would have won 3 in a row. That was when defenders could just kill the QB at will.

John Stallworth had one of the best over-the-hill seasons as a wide receiver. Playing with career underachiever Mark Malone as his QB, Stallworth put up career highs in receptions, yards, and TD’s at the age of 32. His final season statline was 80-1395-11. One of the greats for sure.

Cause Stallworth could be in talks for best receiver in NFL history. Rice will always get the nod but imagine if Stallworth played with Montana, Young, Garcia, and Rich Gannon. 3 MVP and Garcia was hanging 10 and 11 win seasons up after a down couple of years. Just saying.

Football Legend Dude, check your facts. Noll didn't have a racist or even biased bone in his body. He was a decent family man and a renaissance man who loved to read and learn new things consistently. He was picked as HC by the most progressive owner in the league when it came to opportunities for African Americans. Noll selected Greene #1 in '69, took a chance on Greenwood out of a tiny college that doesn't even exist anymore. Many black HOFers from the 70s squad drafted and made starters by him for a reason. Pittsburgh had been successful for so long that when those greats all starting retiring a few yrs apart, they didn't have high draft picks like the late 60s-early 70s. They got the best they could, and made a few gamble picks that didn't turn out like a lot of teams do. You can't be great forever. I suggest you read up on Noll the man off the field.

@@toddpeucker9905 - The only player that had any sort of animosity towards Chuck Noll at all was Terry Bradshaw (albeit that animosity died down over the years). Other than that, every player from those dynasty years has nothing but excellent things to say about Chuck Noll. The culture of the Steelers that we know today was started the the very moment Chuck Noll was hired. Noll took a 40 year laughingstock of a franchise and turned it into one of the NFL's crown jewels. I would even go so far as to say that Chuck Noll may have saved the Steelers from potentially moving at a time when all the steel mills were closing down in the 1970s. Sadly Chuck Noll's biggest mistakes in the eighties was not drafting Dan Marino to succeed Terry Bradshaw and drafting Huey Richardson. Chuck Noll did have some excellent hits in the draft like drafting Ron Woodson, Dermonti Dawson, Eric Green and Hardy Nickerson. Sadly he had some stinkers like Tom Ricketts, John Rienstra and Tim Worley.

It’s interesting that the Steelers were the one team that beat the 49ers in 84’, but it makes more sense if you decipher the history a little bit. The Steelers and 49ers played each other 3 times in the 80s, Pittsburgh won 2 of those matchups (in 81’ SF won 17-14, in 84’ PIT won 20-17, and in 87’ PIT won 30-17). Chuck Noll was familiar with the west coast offense to a degree because Bill Walsh was the offensive coordinator for the division rival Cinicinatti Bengals in the 70s. Even though San Francisco fielded far superior teams compared to Pittsburgh in the 80s decade, the Steelers got the better of San Francisco in 2 out of the 3 matchups.

John Stallworth was a great HOF player who got overshadowed by his teammate Swawn just like John Taylor was a great HOF whow was overshadowed by Rice and they both wore 82 and their bodies looked alike.

IMHO, the 84 49ers were a better team than the 85 Bears. Just as dominant, but without the attention seeking. History tends to prove my opinion right considering what both franchises did after 1985.

The Steelers always seem to get the worst calls in the biggest games going their way. Usually it's pass interference when Swann has no chance at the reception.

Let's not forget that Pittsburgh lost to Miami in the AFC championship game. It could have been them in the Superbowl.
@Price70

Yes, I'm a Steelers fan but sincerely, more than Miami's win over Chicago in 85 to be the only loss for the Bears, I find this Steelers win over SF to be more impressive. Miami was at home and McMahon didn't start for Chicago that Monday night and Miami were defending AFC champions, had a prime Marino, who's quick release matched up well with Chicago's blitzing. The Steelers were on the road with Malone at QB in his first year as a starter vs Joe Montana and Bill Walsh and even though facing a 6-0 team is less intimidating than a 12-0 team, the 6-0 team had a championship QB and coach from Jan 82 and who would go on to win 3 more rings for Joe and 2 more for Walsh. The Bears had never been to the Super Bowl before 85 and that era's team never returned

The 1984 49ers were closer to that 19-0 mark than the famed 1985 Bears were. SF had a chance to beat the Steelers. Chicago had no shot beating Miami.

1995 was the year the Steelers made Super Bowl 30 while in 1999 the 49ers were just straight trash (Steve Young being lost for the season was a factor but the defense was completely exposed too without a good offense to make up for it). Point stands though, the Steelers haven’t won in the Bay Area this century, which is almost unthinkable for an AFC team to do considering that the Raiders have been a dumpster fire since 2002!

@@jonathand.9555 Granted the 2006 Steelers were 8-8 , yet they lost to a 2-14 Raiders team. The 99 49ers team was bad. I do remember them having a ok start and then Young got hurt on Monday night then came the Jeff Garcia era

The 84 Steelers were better than their record. They lost on a fluky final play at Indy and by only 2 points in the 4th quarter at Cincinnati. They were basically an 11-5 squad IMO. They were good enough to beat in the same season, the defending SB champ Raiders and the eventual SB champ 49ers and were the only team to to beat SF all year. They just couldn't matchup with a prime Marino in the reg or post season. Had they found a way to upset Miami in the AFC title game, you know, one of those fluky wins where you get tipped interceptions and special teams TDS etc. they would have had a chance against SF in the SB. Not because they had beaten them in the reg season, but because they just matched up with them well.

Chuck Noll was an excellent coach and is overlooked because of the eReader he coached in but he shows you how great he is by beating this great 49ers team with not nearly the talent he had in the 70's. Just think what the 70's Steeles could have done on this day or that year.

They don't play each other often, but the head to head all time series record for these two teams is one past victory shy for the Steelers from being tied as of 2019. Same goes for Pittsburgh's record against 5 other teams...Seahawks, Saints, Cowboys, Jaguars and Patriots...The Packers and Raiders have a 3 game advantage all time, the Rams 5, Broncos and Redskins 9 more win each. Only the Bears, Giants, and Eagles have double digit more victories head to head with the Steelers and most of those records were compiled when the Steelers were absolutely garbage the first 35 yrs of their existence. However, Pittsburgh absolutely own the expansion Browns*, Bengals, Jets, Colts, Falcons and Panthers. They also sport good records against the Bills, Chargers and Chiefs.

It's weird how on back to back years ('84 & '85) there was two present day (mid 1980s) powerhouse teams who each only had one loss the entire season. ('84 Niners loss to the Steelers AND '85 Bears loss to Miami) And both upset losses were to franchises that were BIGTIME powerhouse dynasties from the previous decade (1970s). Marino's Dolphins kept the '85 Bears from matching (and actually out doing) the 1972 Dolphins unbeaten season. And in '84 the Steelers defeat the 49ers and keep them from an undefeated season. If the 49ers had gone undefeated in '84 PLUS won 3 other SB's in the 80s then that cherry on top (an unbeaten season) would seemingly top the Steelers 4 SB wins in the 70s (but never an unbeaten season). Also the 49ers going unbeaten in '84 would've topped Miami's '72 season due to them Niners having a longer season. That and 4 SB wins in the 80s vs 2 SB wins in the 70s for the Dolphins. CRAZY !!!

The 1979 NFL draft was a disaster for the Steelers and the number one reason there dynasty ended . Steelers selected Greg Hawthorn over Mark Gastineau . Steelers cut Dwaine Board in order to keep a washed up Dwight White . Board went on to become a pro bowler and great pass rusher for the Niners. Steelers also selected Zack Valentine over Joe Montana in the same draft 1979. Pass rush was abysmal from 1979 to 1982 when the Steel curtain retired. Gastineau and Board would have been part of Steel curtain 2.0. Joe Montana as heir apparent to Bradshaw.
