i think it was more of the surroundings of the relationship that was toxic then the actual relationship itself their relationship with each other was actually very healthy.
@@sarahmulligan673 yes, I agree. Even Wilhelm is upset with the circumstances, he would prefer to be in a relationship with Simon, but he does not have the luxury. Like he is so young and has to learn how to balance his commitment to the crown and who he is as a person, but since he's still a teenager he also still is trying to figure out how he feels about both of those things. So it is just a complex situation ig.
they're literally the opposite of toxic, the way they handle conflict and are able to communicate their feelings and grievances openly is more mature than most adults
I would describe Wille and Simme relationship as not ideal but not toxic. If Willie was mean to him in public but nice to him only when they were behind closed doors, that would be toxic, imo. I always look to the characters to make my determinations and Simon was good with the arrangement until Willie lied about the video. I would watch 6 seasons of this so long as the writing stays this strong!
I would definitely also watch every season that put out of this show!! As far as them not being toxic I don’t agree just because that relationship is by no means healthy. It has chemistry and potential but I don’t think it’s healthy. I appreciate you engaging with my content though💕
I enjoyed it so much, I loved it. The characters have more growth potential that could be explored in another season. I just hope it has a happy ending after all that because I’m over trauma love stories.
I definitely agree that the reason wilhelm isn’t as fleshed out is because he’s been very sheltered. Throughout the show you see how bad his anxiety is. And how frustrated he his by his “responsibility”. I think he hasn’t been put in many difficult situations. He was the younger brother. So he never had as much responsibility as his brother. And his family has always shielded him and taken care of things. And so when he does start to find himself in confusing or tough situations he starts getting anxiety and is confused and doesn’t know what to do. For the first time he’s trying to navigate his feelings towards another person, and they sends him into a panic. He’s thrown into a whole new school away from his home, and that sends him into a panic. And then his brother dies and he’s suddenly the crown prince, and now he has to take on this responsibility, and that just really messes him up. Then he finds out in the finale that his “friend” is the one that betrayed him. And you can tell, when his mom says that she knew it was august and that she’s not going to punish him, that it is the first time wilhelm’s family has ever failed to “fix things” for him.
Shit, this is so insightful. I never even considered his anxiety, but looking back it’s so clear. He definitely has a bit more depth than I initially gave him credit for. This comment has given me much to think about 😭💀
@@mbalimafuya1878 lol yeah I picked up on his anxiety easily because I’ve suffered from anxiety too. And they never out right say that’s what it is. So it’s only shown through his actions. The nail biting, and loss of breath, and self soothing rubs on his chest, and the fidgeting and the nerves. I think the actor that played wilhelm did such a good job at that

I loved your review. If I could just add, a queer love story about a royal is a good way to depicted as how even progressive places are still held back by outdated traditions. Sweden is known to be one of the most progressive countries when it comes to lgbtq+ rights. When Simon & Wilhelm are outed most people's reaction isn't homophobic necessarily but shock as now people are curious to know how the family line can continue for a queer royal set to be future king. If any thing this shows the monarchy is a flawed system that can't progress in modern society because it still upholds these heteronormative practices.
I think there is more to Wilhelm than you may have picked up on. There is clear indications that he suffers from anxiety and panic attacks. I also think he is craving a love he doesn’t necessarily feel from his parents (as seen by him hugging the headmistress, and also asking Simon to hold him after the scene in the field). There is only so much that can be shown in 6 episodes, but it would be good to follow up on that if it gets a second season. I did like the fact that communication was key to their relationship. They constantly checked in with each other, even if Wilhelm was pushing Simon away half the time.
I love your rating for this series, such a good take! 🌻 I get what you mean about Wilhelm being less fleshed-out than Simon, I think it would be nice to see how his life was before the fight he got in (his old friends, the public school, etc.) to give his character more depth! But I do think you’re right about him not having yet explored the different facets of his personality. Then again, I’m not at all objective about his character bc I kind of relate to his struggles (the family expectations, anxiety, gay panic, and constant comparison to his sibling) and can totally get how that would make him lack motivations of his own for now! I would hope that the ending indicates a future turn for his character🤞we want that sweet character dev

Toxic? Their relationship is one of the most non-toxic relationships I have ever seen. We should not forget their backgrounds and they are teens. Yes, I got mad both at Wilhelm and Simon at certain times, but defining the relationship as toxic is wrong, I must say.
Simon didnt mind to be hide their relationship in the beginning tho, as long they're in this together. He start to have a problem when Wilhelm decided to cover his ass only and still be with him. That's when it became an issue. Also, Wilhelm never said hes gay, he just in love with Simon.
True, he didn’t say he’s gay but that’s why I said ‘queer relationship’ through the video because I don’t know Wilhelms identity but it’s definitely not straight. Also I see what you’re saying as far as Simon only having an issue later but Wilhelm changes his mind constantly and Simon visibly isn’t happy about it though the show

Its look like he understand that Wilhelm is confused first and then the death of his brother affected him. I think Simon didnt mind to be with him and for him even if Wilhelm didnt know what he want, but when he hurt him to save himself (like with the drugs and with the video) is other thing, that's what break the relationship, the fact that his reputation comes first then his bf feelings.

Fair to say it’s a complicated relationship and my short video couldn’t cover all the nuances.
I enjoyed your takes on the show - which I love. I do wonder about the toxic comment as well. I think that Wilhelm does his best at the time. That is to say his relationship role models are pretty toxic (parents) so am assuming he has no idea. One thing you didn't mention is that Wilhelm apart from being gay?/queer in a family that is not especially supportive also has other issues - he has issues with anxiety as well. The one time he does stand up for Simon is about Alexander and the drugs - and throws August under the bus to do it. He also tries to convince his family that he doesn't want to say anything about the tape - he folds , but he does try. I hope season 2 he and Simon sort their differences. At the end hugging Simon for so long in public seemed like a big F you to the crown so I am keen how things will progress. His mother really betrayed him too - covering up what August did. That would be hard to forgive - roll on November for Season 2.. I really hope they have more as well - these guys are my favorite TV

I appreciated the fact that the “popular”, sought after girl in Young Royals was a curvy woman of colour so so much. I think the reason that they chose to not address any struggles that she may have with body image or race in order to normalize these attributes being attractive without question. While that certainly isn’t fully realistic, each piece of media creates its own story world and deliberately highlights the issues that it wants to address, and in the case of Young Royals, I would say the main ones are classism/elitism and homophobia. I can’t speak to Felice’s blackness as a white person, though I did find it slightly hypocritical that it wasn’t mentioned at all seeing as Simon’s ethnicity was (briefly). But it meant so much to me to see someone with a similar body type to me be portrayed as beautiful and desirable! I suspect that the creators of the show wanted to move the needle slightly in diversifying beauty standards by purposely not addressing Felice’s race or size. Also the casting was just absolutely incredible and all the actors had amazing chemistry with each other, so perhaps actress just happened to be a perfect fit and these issues weren’t intended to be part of the storyline before she was cast.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who appreciated her portrayal. I do get what you’re saying about them not having race and fatphobia as their primary focuses. Perhaps it wasn’t intentional, perhaps it was, either way it was definitely something that I noticed and appreciated. they did subtly imply body issues when her mother was trying to force her into her old dress and it was too small for Felice but it fit for her mother and her grandmother. It was probably also an analogy to how she was being suffocated by the corset of her mother's constricting expectations.
Felice's size was definitely addressed a couple times in the show although only in passing and in relation to her mother... at the parents lunch she's given a something because it was too big for her mother to wear, in another scene she mentions her mother pushing for her to be ~perfect~ including a line about how she should lose weight and then there's the attempt at being forced into the sankta lucia dress. the fact that her ethnic background isn't mentioned might have to do with her family's status as "modern nobility" (or w/e august called it when he said that). we don't really know what's the background for that except that they're rich af and at least her mother's side of the family has attended hillerska for some generations so they're not noble by way of titles but they're old enough money, i suspect big time family company or something like that. plus her dad dresses very posh too so i want to say he grew up in a similar environment too. meanwhile i suppose it's """okay""" to mention simon's ethnicity because he's working class and unlike felice's dad, his mother was not born in sweden. he and sara attending an elite school is perceived as ~immigrant success~ when felice's family on her dad's side achieved that a long time ago or maybe never even had too (idk about the history of black people in sweden or anything but i'm still pretty sure they've been around a lot longer that latin americans lol)
@@iyawakarehen You're right, Simon's race being addressed as a second-generation immigrant and not Felice's definitely ties into the classism and elitism at the heart of the show. That's really interesting! And as for Felice's size, you're right, it was definitely mentioned - but it was always framed within the general problem of her mother being overbearing. I didn't get the impression that Felice herself was uncomfortable with her body outside of wanting to conform to her mother's expectations, and she clearly was seen as beautiful by her peers.
Regarding the drug topic, I think they half cover it because it's just too small of a topic of side characters that barely affects the main story so they touch it slightly to fit more important stuff into 6 episodes.
SPOILERS ⚠️ i feel like what you said abt the complexity and why vilhelm isnt as interesting as simon is a good idea but i feel like we end up getting to see what makes him complex as he develops in the show like with his brother dying him dealing with someone having an unrequited crush on him (which i know doesn’t sound bad but as an aromantic person i find it very difficult) dealing with figuring himself out and his sexuality having a romantic and sexual relationship with someone then being outed and your intimate romantic sex tape leaked all while having the pressure of being the crown prince. i do feel like simon has already had his “fleshing out” wear as we are just watching vilhelm be “fleshed out” they both struggle in the show becuase of wear they come from and what there rep is. and i feel like thats portrayed really well! ❤️
I love3 this review, I agree Simon is so complicated and yeah I think he is mores fleshed out than Wilhem. I need a season 2 and happy ending this show makes me feel soo much. August is n asshole, seriously he really could've seen them together then ran away and not do anything and leave them be. everyone hates August. I find it so sad, that to ends with them apart, really hope in season 2 Wilhem comes out of the closet properly and is then happily with Simon at least by the end, it was so sad that Simon hat to ' go back in the closet' figuratively speaking. I did though love their intimacy scenes a lot. made me feel really lonely
