He is saying if you put your head on the line as a pawn you play a risky game because you have to be determined and lucky to become a queen or you'll just end up as... A mere pawn. While kings, they don't just look at a simple path, they fight wars, they rule... In all honesty just google any chess scene, the metaphors are a old but some are worth it.
