This is a great video that should be required viewing! I have a list of things to consider before every stage that is taped to my clipboard so I can look at it regularly. There are all hard lessons learned, some more than once. Don't be afraid to ask questions and/or borrow bags. Planning the stage 1. Front support 2. Rear support 3. Get low when possible 4. Minimize movements Stage Prep: 1. Gather DOPE data a. Multiple wind locations b. Write DOPE card 2. Develop plan and gear a. Gear limits b. Hold over vs dial 3. ID targets and landmarks from shooting position 4. Mental walkthrough 4x a. Target sequence b. Positions c. Magazine change timing 5. Verify parallax and elevation on scope 6. Check magazines full and spare (always have a spare) 7. Gather gear 8. FOCUS my mind And a list to remind me of things to do while I'm shooting the stage: Shooting the stage 1. Natural Point of Aim 2. Respiratory pause; don’t hold breath 3. Grip 4. Rifle level 5. Trigger press and hold 6. Spot the shot 7. ADJUST AGGRESSIVELY
This is a good honest review of how an NRL22 or a Rimfire PRS event is run. In most cases the PRS events are much more difficult do to the longer ranges. God Bless you all.
I haven’t shot competitive 22s since my young days back in the 70’s with turkey shoots lol. This year, I’ve decided to get back into some competitive shooting. I found out there is an NRL22 match up here in Alberta, Canada in late March. This was the video I needed to see before I submitted my entry so thanks a bunch!
I haven't seen all your vids yet but the ones I have have been very helpful. Couple of questions: 1. What to do if you have a misfire. 2. What about equipment fails. Are you disqualified? 3. Lot testing. Do you clean your barrel between different lots or brands? Thanks again
Thanks! Answers: 1. If it's an accidental discharge (AD) or negligent discharge (ND) it will probably be a stage/match DQ. If the round doesn't go off (hang fire) you're usually fine to eject the round and continue or cock the bolt again and try to make the round go off (as long as you're on the scope and on target). 2. Equipment fails can mean many things. You probably are done for that stage (not DQ'd, but you'll only get points for the impacts made before the malfunction). You can try to repair it before the next stage or substitute a similar rifle and continue the match. Sometimes you are allowed a mulligan and can redo the stage. 3. Lot testing is key. For my open rifle I have settled on Lapua ammo so if I'm testing as long as I use ammo with the same bullet and lubrication (SK/Lapua) then I don't find the need to clean (unless the round count gets high). If I was switching between CCI/ELEY/Norma/Lapua/RWS etc. I would clean and re-season the barrel with each different brand. For your first 2 questions I would consult the rulebook and ask the Match Director for guidance for your specific match.
This is all great information I shot my first nrl22 match on the tenth of this month one thing I will add to this info is if you make any major changes to the rifle you are bringing to the match take it to the range after the change. I am saying this because I'm the dumb butt who changed the firing pin in my rifle just before this match and I did not bring it to the range after BIG MISTAKE my rifle did not shoot as it needed a little filing work to function properly luckily for me I had a friend who signed up for the match at the same time and he let me shoot his rifle I still did horrible at the match but it was so much fun. If you are on the fence about entering in to a match just do it you will not regret it.side note if you are disabled make sure you can get into the position that are in the match I wear a brace on my right leg and it doesn't allow my leg to bend all the way so the course with the chair had to be done modified for my self I did not let them know ahead of time about my issue thinking I could do it without checking when you sign up they will eventually post a course of fire and you will know what the obstacles are then you can try them before hand
Any time! It doesn't look like there are many NRL22 clubs near Tampa (if that's what you mean by west central FL), but there are some PRS Rimfire matches which are similar to the NRL22 matches.

Right on man! I’ve been gone at work for 6 weeks. Hopefully home Thursday and I have to put my rifle together Friday hopefully and zero it and test some ammo Saturday I’m hoping. Overwhelmingly bolt action. There are a few semi-autos here and there, but the general consensus is that bolt actions are more accurate. I've never heard about a rule for single feed rifles only. The one exception is no tube fed rifles; all rifles should have detachable magazines.
great video... question: as an Old Gun, do I have to maintain contact with the rifle when going prone or exiting prone? Meaning... can I place the gun down (in the safe direction) get down and then mount the gun? BTW - Did you mention the 180 deg rule? Thanks again.... The rules state that you must maintain positive control of the rifle. If you set it down/pick it up off of the ground on purpose that is totally fine. If you drop the rifle, that's a big issue and a likely stage or match DQ. Check out my match footage videos for examples of prone stages.
How many events? Are they different for each location or club? I been doing the KYL. Done 5 of them and just got an email we are having our very first NRL22 event March 16th. This coming Saturday. I actually have to work. But I’ll get in the next one!
Each month the NRL22 organization sets a course of fire that consists of 5 stages. Every club in the country (and some international clubs) partake in the same course of fire for that month. Individual clubs may add bonus stages, but the 5 core stages remain the same Check out my other videos of match footage and the strategy videos for more information. The course of fire is published about week before the next month and I publish videos before the first weekend of the month for the next month's course of fire.
I shoot base class with a CZ 457 MTR varmint, and it has a cold bore shift (CBS) in cold weather only... but not in the summer matches??? Currently working out that data hopping the CBS is consistent.
My CZ457 MTR also had a CBS that was very annoying. I chose to re-barrel it and it is now my Open class gun. Due to the tight bore on the MTR model they are more prone to CBS. Some ammo is more susceptible than others due to the different types of lubrication used. I know people who shoot ELEY ammo have more issues and they end up plugging their barrels on both ends in-between stages as keeping the moisture in the barrel seems to help mitigate the CBS issue. Using Lapua/SK ammo seems to work better, but you need to find what works in your rifle.

Precision is relative to the rules of the sport/competition. A hunter may only have to be as precise as the vital zone of an animal. When you want to shoot a 1/4" target at 50 yards off of an unstable barricade without wind flags or shooting jackets that sounds pretty precise to me. While benchrest and smallbore prone may warrant a higher level of precision it should be expected given the gear used in those disciplines.
@@CopperStarPrecision I wouldn't consider hunting a precision sport, not would I consider just hitting something at 50 yards precision. The video I watched about NRL seems to have a decent amount of specific gear: bipods, sandbags. Smallbore prone only requires a sling, and is much more precise than this NRL "plinking."
Cool, so just hitting a 0.25" steel target at 50 yards is plinking, but hitting a paper target with a 0.5" bull in ARA Benchrest with one-piece rests and wind flags or a 0.719" 10 ring with a shooting jacket, sling, and wind flags in smallbore prone competition is true precision. I guess there's no spectrum of precision, it's either precise or not. Got it.
@@CopperStarPrecision The internet egos are sure dumb......let them come out and shoot your match and see how well they do. If they make everyone look like amateurs, then they have something to brag about. A similar person commented yesterday that a dillon progressive press is no good for anything other than pistol plinking ammo. That is funny, considering I won the lever action silhouette match last sunday with 357 ammo from a progressive and usually place at the top with a number of match wins with 30-30 and my own cast bullets (from the automated bullet casting machine I built from scratch) that were loaded on the same machine. When 30-32 of 40 targets is the high score, you know it is a challenging match. Of course it is offhand, no support, standing and with peep or iron sights, and only one round allowed per target. Yesterday, I won the rimfire silhouette match with a highly customized 10/22 that I built. NPR was on the same day as lever action, so I saw the rimfire range (West End in SoCal) was in use but would have to miss my match to check it out. That is what got me to look up NPR to see if it is something I could have fun with.
