Your Bladder Catheter - what is normal? 

My husband was released from the hospital one week ago after undergoing a cystoscopy, with a Foley catheter and a kidney catheter being inserted. In the hospital he was getting morphine and demerol. He was released with no information about that thing and no pain medication. The problems started the next day with severe pain and the catheter from the kidney malfunctioning. The emergency phone call resulted in advice to take ibuprofen. Needless to say that was no help. Another call to the emergency number resulted in a prescription for oxybutynin (an otc drug for bladder spasms, which also did nothing to relieve the pain. Side note: the aforementioned prescription seems to be successful in treating sweaty hands and feet.... That evening, we decided a trip to the ER was in order, but the line to get into the door of the ER was out the door and down the street. We went home. Monday morning I get on the phone to the urologist and refused to hang up til we got an appointment that day. Luckily the PA that we saw agreed to remove that f***ing catheter: pain gone. The other catheter, from the kidney, was in the off position. If we had waited the additional 11 days until the scheduled appointment, it would have killed him. The medical system in this country is so jacked up, it's frightening. But thank God we have fantastic insurance, which costs us more every month than all our other bills combined.

I have had one for several years, your presentation is on the money, every catheter wearer should watch this. I have seen some other videos that people have done that were not at all helpful as I think they confused people but yours tells it how it is is.

Glad that your patients get proper instruction. You told me more and allayed my fears in a few minutes than my urologists told me in three months. Three doctors 8 nurses either don’t know or don’t care. Fortunately my Primary cares and was able to arrange a visiting nurse who is very helpful and informative. But that was after two months.

I keep coming back to this video. The other ones turn my stomach. You are putting me at ease while I am scared. Thank you.

Thank you for this! I was sent home with one after a hysterectomy because I was unable to pee on my own. I will have it removed in a couple days. I had a couple bloody tissue pieces and got concerned. I drained that. The next drainage my bag was half full of very dark amber colored that concerned me. I emptied it into a container to save it for the doctor. I told my self if I filled another bag with that color urine I will go into the ER, if not I will hold off as my body might just be trying to flush something. I’ve scaled way back on the pain medication (I was taking as directed today I have had zero oxicodine 5mg I was prescribed and just 400 mg ibuprofen. Anyways, this morning I found some more blood specks and some other tissue in my urine and came across this video, which put me at ease. Thank you!

My father has a catheter. It is horribly painful from spasms. I am hoping his body will adjust but, it so painful for him, he needs something to stop spasms! It would be great to see types of clothing a male can wear, having a catheter. Great information! Thank you! 🏵

I use a "flip-Flo" valve and that allows me to urinate into the toilet and not having to use a bag during the day - only at night. I change the valve every 7 days and have not had a UTI in 2+ years.

I (male) 80 yrs. have some issues described..especially lots of debris ( prostate cancer - treated by radiation caused) and leaking around the foley discharge tube I am going to hydrate up and try to bear the pain until clearer urine. My son has multi times tried to flush with kit. Some sucessful others not so much. I have been on this cath/bag for a couple weeks..now feels like a partial blockage with overflow. No fun. Son exhausted... If I can get rid of debris my URO says I will probably do hyperbaric chamber sessions (many) OK I have vented my frustrations, good luck to all other cath people..

i cant rememeber if im supposed to use the same port for the day bag as the night bag. there is a 3rd unused port.. which has a clear plus similiar to teh night bag.

I’m having severe bladder spasms with my suprapubic catheter. I’ve had my catheter for years but these spasms are new. The only relief is sitting on the loo and allowing the bladder spasm to push urine out my uretha which again is very painful. I’m waiting for botox injections to help with bladder pain from recurring but I wish i had something that could relieve or prevent these intense spasms until the botox appointment in 8 weeks.

Would it be prudent to remove the catheter if it's clogged up inside the bladder but the urine is forcing it way past the catheter wish I think that means that the posture has gone down a bit I've been on medication for 4 days my only fear is that when I pulled the catheter out that blood clot may come off the tip of the catheter and stay inside the bladder and clock it up though the urine coming out is see through yellow it's a Sunday and I can't get in touch with none of the doctors on Sunday I'm thinking that the prostate is open enough where I can urine with no pain I've had this on for 7 days and my next visit isn't till 3 days from now so it's real messy the way that urine is coming out but at least it is coming out and with no pain in fact with more of a relief feeling

Are you talking about the SP2 bag or just the catheter bag?

I just had a Stent and catheter for kidney stone.. the stent is still in but the catheter is gone. I still feel like I have to pee all the time. Like literally at all times. Is that the stent bothering me or catheter irritation? It's been less than 24 hours.

Where can I buy one of these things? Walmart?

My mom is 90, and has dementia. She recently has a foley catheter in because her bladder ballooned, and you can see a big protrusion on her tummy. Doctor said she had UTI. So they gave her antibiotics for a week. Then. The catheter was removed. After two days her bladder ballooned agin. Gave her monurol for two days. Then catheter was removed on the 6th day, that was yesterday. Today her bladder is starting to balloon again,. She was able to pee on her diaper the morning after, but not anymore the whole day today. I don’t want to leave the catheter long term because she has episodes of LBM and the feces reach all the way into her vagina. And it’s not possible to really clean the area with the catheter in. What advise can you share?

In Australia we have our catheters changed once a months and they are provided free

I have a number of them inserted I he last month, enlarged prostate, in the past couple weeks, many daily, the only ones that work at are the curve at inserted end. Most work a few hours, most urine bypass the catheter, I think was size 24 or 26,

Thank you. I can hardly get out of bed as it feels like a ball and chain and blood comes shortly after. 4 days to go. The bladder spasms feel like I am straining hard to pee and nothing comes out. It hurts so much during spasms and I cry. I feel scared and helpless so I sleep.

MY HUSBAND has Foley c. and intense bladder spasms. Very painful. They are more and more frequent until, after about 2 months- he goes to ER and after some medication and change of catheter he is ok. it is terrible. His urologist changes cath. every month anyway

My partner had his catheter removed 16 days ago, then had antibiotics for 10 days, but when he passes wee it’s still abit sore , is that normal?

Great video. I have an indwelling cath and a few times a day I feel an urge to urinate which is accompanied by intense pain. Is that bladder spasm? Are there any over-the-counter meds that would alleviate this? Would it be advisable to ask my urologist to reduce the size of the bubble?

I'm 16 and may be needing a foley because of bladder paralysis. (I also have intestinal dysmotility, and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) How do I get through high school with this?

My suprapubic catheter bypasses frequently is so annoying do you know the reasons for this. This was so interesting.

My father has 2 nephrostomy bags from his kidneys. He pulled on one of the tubes and now there is blood showing up in the tube for the past few hours and comes and goes with movement. Is this something to worry about and to bring him to emerge? He doesn't feel any pain either.

A Lotus catheter does not use a balloon and therefore causes less infection than a Foley. Why was this not mentioned?

Nobody talks about the flip flo device which is much better than a bag

I have a catheter after my prostate was removed three days ago. When I try to have a bowel movement there is some blood that comes out of the penis when the catheter goes in. I am using triple action antibiotic ointment three times daily. I just want to make sure that this bleeding is normal.

Female nurses don't care or know how to insert in male patients, I had bad experience on last surgery's.

I don’t understand why students don’t train on each other, but after the mannequins they immediately try to do it on poor patients, even under the supervision of an experienced mentor??? I don't envy the patient if the student does this for the first time.

You don't need foley catheters.
