Since February to June we have been running our research and development workshops for our creative health project 'Your Brain Explained' with 6 schools in Southampton and Portsmouth.
Each workshop day has lasted 6 hrs and we have successfully visited 6 schools located in the highest levels of deprivation in Southampton and Portsmouth.
During each drama and neuroscience workshop our actors have been using sensory props, sound and our inflatable brain dome to represent the functionality of
each part of the brain in an immersive and exploratory space.
Guided improvisation and research activities have engaged the
young people in an imaginative tour of their own brains using ‘Think, Brain, Health’ framework to explore positive versus
negative lifestyle choices.
Using Applied Theatre as a tool for opening dialogue, raising voices & conflict resolution, we placed the young people at
the centre of the storytelling & problem solving to empower healthy choices.
Working with Dr Kathryn Woods-Townsend at LifeLab our young people also co-designed an escape room activity for the school workshops using hand-on scientific games and puzzles!
The Solent Mind team came in and delivered an interactive session, providing insights into what it is like to live with dementia and how we can support someone to live well, following their diagnosis. Alongside the presentation we heard from carers through pre-recorded videos/audio clips who provided an account of their day to day lives.
Lastly, during each workshop day we were supported by Dr Louise Kelly from the University of Southampton to provide a ‘Meet the neuroscientist’ interactive presentation on positive brain health and dementia interventions.
We have gathered some incredible insights from young people which we are now currently using to devise our FREE one hour interactive performance for the Autumn term.
