Tanner, this is absolutely fantastic content. I think your perspective is not only right on, but so eloquently communicated. You are truly one of the most thoughtful, intelligent, and stimulating guys in the style game. I look forward to more of your viewpoints, provocations, and anecdotes. Kudos man!

Thanks so much for the comment Peter! I love thinking about style this way, and even more, I love that you guys enjoy it too.

Hey, I wear ascots, fur hats, and three piece suits. Not always ofcourse, but I do pick and choose when and where I will add these items. This might be obvious that I have enough confidence to wear accessories slightly outside of the safe zone ;) Great video Tanner.

Wow Tanner. I think this video was your best one yet. Really nicely put. You kept my ears wide open for the entire video and thinking about everything you said. Great one.

Glad to hear it Gideon. Communication has always been a part of clothing, so it's fun to outline it for people.

If you were to read the threads on Styleforum about surgeon cuffs, many of them will say leaving the last button of your sleeve undone is tacky. The message it sends is I have enough money to get a custom suit. It does not matter what you do, the only way to learn is by practice. You will make mistakes and there is nothing wrong with that.

Great observation. That's one of the reasons I don't spend time on Style Forum or r/MFA. Both have plenty of good guys, but the overall cultures of both tribes are not anything I want to be part of. And they don't want someone like me part of their tribe either so win-win.
@APSays-hu1wd
@APSays-hu1wd 7 лет назад
Same reason I no longer read either. Once I saw a conglomeration of SF users on a thread about shoe quality talking about how Allen Edmonds were "barely passable" I knew SF was a community that was, let's say a bit out of touch with the real world. It's important to balance "tribe" as you would say and reality!

They've become an echo chamber as much as any other insulated subculture can be.
@stevepa999

I agree. I call people in Styleforum the Rip Van Winkles of style. Maybe I misunderstood what you said, but this was a reply about the comment you made about the message you send by leaving the last button of your sleeve undone. The point I was trying to make is that the message you send to the people who do understand its significance, is a negative one, not a positive one.
@MasculineStyle
@MasculineStyle 7 лет назад
I've been in the industry for years and my experience has been that it's a positive. Not a huge deal because everyone who's in the suiting world makes surgeon cuffs, but it's still a positive. I don't trust in the opinions of the guys over at SF specifically because they act like they are the entirety of the sartorial tribe when the reality is that they're their own subculture over there.

When you go classic, the devil is in the details. When you go bold, less is more. That's how I see it, anyway.

Thanks, T! Ultimately, I approach writing the same way I approach clothing. It's the story behind the layers that matters.

What you said about the navy sports jacket with the barchetta pocket was fascinating. I'm really getting into men's fragrance as of late and am noticing some obvious parallels with clothing. To the undiscerning nose, some well-established fragrances may also be perceived as "boring", but there is a clear but very subtle distinction from the more mediocre ones there. It's more about the naturalness and quality of the ingredients, the blending and balance of the notes and how even the most inexperienced cologne enthusiast can probably pick out each individual note once they know what's in there. So yeah, you always rise above mediocrity in the detail.

Love this comparison Nick. It's another great example of the difference between being better vs being different.

Haha. I hear you with the frustration with that one. Same reason I don't like the word "gentleman" it's just so effective in getting the point across.

Don't get me started on "gentleman" mate, I'll need a big glass of wine and about half an hour's worth of breathing exercises to calm down if I start pondering that one... ;o)

Thank you for all your time and effort to make the videos Tanner. Taking notes from your videos has not only helped me look more professional and mature, but also saved me hundreds of dollars (since I'm a student its important). I look forward to more videos and I hope you get many more subscribers - you deserve them! For your question: For me an interesting and prestige watch(interesting leather straps, and designs), a good shine on shoes (99% of men dont shine their shoes so that makes a big difference) and a good fragrance(not a clothing item but still can help you be more attractive and unique) help me stand out from other men.

Love the comment Martin. Those little details can go a long way without being too over the top. Glad you're around!

I knew a guy who lost his job, his truck collapsed and he was broke, but he would put on a suit to walk to the mailbox.

we as men generally dress for comfort. Although we may like to look good we need to be comfortable. when we were boys and had to wear a suit and tie we thought we were going to die. when we get our first white collar job we put on the suit not happily but we do then over time we get used to it. we start to like it when we get compliments. same as a uniform we wear it because it's part of the job. we are not crazy about wearing it but we do because of the job

This attitude is actually an anomaly and really only specific to your generation. Men haven't always had a false dichotomy in their heads where they believed that clothing could either look good or be comfortable - that's a 20th century problem. Thankfully we're moving away from it. I know I don't need to be in sweats or a Tommy Bahama shirt to feel good in what I'm wearing.

I'm really enjoying your videos. Keep going in this direction. Good stuff. I look back and realise that my early days did indeed include sone very brash clothes. But I am bringing it down to earth again and concentrating on simplicity but doing it well.

Love to hear the progress man. Too many guys who get into style thing their journey stops when they're wearing loud stuff and that's really just the beginning.

I just got myself a pair of black and white chuck tailors , and a black denim jacket . Its getting hot where i live so i can't really wear many sweaters and dress shirts , even though 90% of my wardrobe consist of those things. I'm really having a hard time mixing and matching casual clothes (eg. jeans , tshirt , sneakers) , with the more "dressy" parts of my wardrobe. Have any tips for that? I feel like i'm wasting potential because i'm sepparating my clothes into such groups.

Have you checked out Ryan Magin? He has a whole ethos he calls Street Sharp and it combines those two elements you're struggling with very well.
