Honestly, at least they are telling us. There are games on Steam that have minimum spec requirements that, due to years of updates, won't even open the game.

1. GOG does have the ability to install off the disk. They provide DRM free versions of the installer available for download (and you can keep the installers as is on your own storage), with almost all patches available separately. Not just for CD Projekt but a lot of games on GOG. 2. Even through the GOG Galaxy (their equivalent of Steam) you can roll back to a previous version if you want, at any time, and choose not to have automatic updates turned on. 3. Happened with Witcher 3, with the next gen update, even though they may not have actually officially updated it. It ran on my GTX 1080 at 1080p60fps, and now needs an RTX4080 for my 1440p120fps setup, with the next gen updates (RT too) EDIT: I meant 1080p60hz and 1440p120hz as a description of the setup, not the actual fps in-game. The in-game fps that I had in both setups was 120+

considering that 1440p is nearly 80% more pixels and 120fps is twice the fps, I don't see how it's crazy to need a more than twice as good GPU for that increase in resolution and framerate
@RishalRaj

@@damplamp My bad. I wasn't clear. 1080p60hz is what I meant to say, since I was describing the setup I had. I used to get over 120fps using the GTX 1080 on that setup. Also, the difference is bigger than the raw performance difference between the cards, which can be seen from the many videos on youtube trying to run the next-gen Witcher 3 on GTX 1080 (ti) and getting miserable fps. I have made the edit in the OP. Hope that clarifies

This. It's good of linus to be critical of moves like this, but complaining about drm and other toxic game companies issues without knowing that alternatives exist is not a good look. GOG does what no other distribution company does to respect their customers, we should put our money where our mouths are and promote gog more frequently.

One thing that Linus apparently doesn't know is that the cyberpunk min spec was not a "can play at" ... It was a "will boot at" spec. When the game came out i had a computer that was at or slightly above the minimum and i was getting 15-30 fps. The new minimum spec looks much more reasonable for a good experience at medium settings.

Exactly what I've been saying. This feels much more like honest requirements where the previous ones weren't (likely to soften backlash for their initially broken game). Attacking devs for being truthful won't make ur game run if they go back to lying again, I really doubt this new dlc is much harder to run. A 3200g as a recommended requirement was almost definitely a straight up lie from what I've seen.

@@thepatrikperspective Given the state of the industry, continuous Optimization will not magically make a game work on whatever desired specs you target. The Specs (as a concept) were never really meant to be the kind of hardline expectation modern gamers use it for. This has only been made worse by gamers thinking 60FPS is the new bare minimum standard for "acceptable". Same with higher resolution. Compounding this is that game content is no longer static; which is the opposite of what you want when trying to optimize something. I've seen countless games through public testing phases gain and lose ground on performance, while also steadily multiplying assets, expanding and adding new system mechanics, and having to somehow do all of that while supposedly still fitting into a "recommended spec". Frankly there is limit of how far you can push a given recommended spec. And now that some online games are so old, that players are DEMANDING engine overhauls to overcome known limitations, it should not shock anyone that the recommended/min specs might justify reassessment. Which leads to the real question that your statement should raising..... Should they bother giving Specs, if its going to be treated like a "fixed space" the whole game will forever be beholden to? Or perhaps having to change release models for games that forces them to Fork at major system changes, so that a previously stated spec can be supported forever. If I was being spiteful, I would say we go with lowest common denominator of the lowest spec'd, reasonably popular game console. That way, all games can be trusted to work for the largest number of people. If your system is overspec'd and doesn't get utilized.... well that your fault for over-specing.

Yeah, it honestly reminds me of World of Tanks "back in the day" (funny they mentioned it), because early on the game was optimized to run on the absolute potatoes that the average Russian citizen had in their living room, worse than the potatoes of most other countries. Problem is that they did it at the expense of more modern systems, so one thing the game did back then was load effects from the disk as needed. This after SSDs hit the market, but they were still overpriced and far from mainstream, so anyone with an HDD would have a sudden split-second freeze when the effect played, as the drive struggled to read the data. For ultra-low-spec machines this was good as it freed up RAM and VRAM, and the effect wasnt as big anyway. But the fact it would do this on high-end machines, too, was infuriating, the RAM was there, the VRAM, too, but the HDD put a big stop sign in the way of rendering every time something exploded. Only people with SSDs were safe from these stutters until they patched in some better optimization....after a few years.

Odds are that the actual minimum performance hasn't changed on low settings but they're pushing the game farther than they did and they're recommending hardware closer to what people are actually recommending for 60 fps play, realistic or not. I'll fire it up on my i5 6300HQ and 960M 4GB once the update drops and let you know how it does. I doubt there will be a noticeable difference.

I will defend CDPR in this case on a few things: 1. As others have mentioned, you can but multiple SSD's for the price of the base game, and even more if you include the expansion 2. You actually can downgrade and change what version you're running of the game if you are using GOG (I think there might be ways for other platforms, but a DRM free solution will always be better regardless) 3. I don't actually think the recommended specs are representative of the actual requirements, which is bad, but since you can't really find ones that are, I'm not going to hold this above their heads specifically. Still not a great look, but considering they've already dropped last-gen console support a long time ago, I can't really say this came out of the blue.

Microsoft did it with Windows 8 64-bit: you had to install the 8.1 free update to continue getting support, but the minimum CPU requirements for the 64-bit version had changed with that .1 update, so if you had a very early 64-bit CPU and had decided to buy the retail version of Windows 8, you had to go back to whatever OS you had before because you had no way to install the free but mandatory .1 update.

I'm not sure if everyone fully appreciates how much of a bottleneck HDDs are, given that they hit their physical speed limit about 20 years ago. I'd imagine that developers have had to just 'deal with it' and work around it, and so there's a lot they just couldn't do without alienating 80% of their user-base. I'm pretty late to that party myself, having only even upgraded to a mobo that supports SSD about 4 months ago. But MAN the difference is basically life changing - especially when you load your OS onto it. I think SSDs have hit that tipping point where more than 50% of PC users have one - or at least a slot for one. They come as standard on most new PCs. about updates breaking mod compatibility: I used to host a game server that heavily relied on a modified server instance that just sat on top of the vanilla instance, but still needed to be updated for EVERY MINOR PATCH. One time, I kinda bitched at the game support team, and actually ended up getting one of the devs who was unaware of the modding platform. It was all open source and everything, so I sent them links to where they could view the source code & make pull requests. The next major patch fixed it. Suddenly the mod only needed to be updated when something significant changed, and compatibility was broadened to even support games that ran on the same engine but didn't have specific patches made for them. I went from patching daily to patching once every 3 months or so. Honestly, I don't know if I'm the one that caused it or if it just happened to coincide, but I like to feel like I deserve credit for that.

Honestly SSDs are at the point you can get a 2TB SATA SSD for less than $80. There’s not a lot of reasons to use HDD as your game storage anymore. It’s just a bottleneck at this point

@@A_Chocolate_Cookie I dunno what the situation is in Europe but there’s lots of SATA SSDs for 2tb under $90, provided you don’t mind the lack of dram which for a SATA drive isn’t a big loss The SSDs you’re looking at may have dram which is why they’re £90 for 1TB. Dram increases the cost a lot

To be fair, if you computer doesn't meet the updated minimum requirements, it probably wasn't running Cyberpunk all that well to begin with. I'm thinking this is less a raising of the requirements as it is being honest about what realistic requirements actually were in the first place. As long as not meeting the requirements doesn't actually prevent you from starting up the game.

Beat Games IS NOT determined to kill the Beat Saber modding scene. They update their game, and mods break. They've explained several times that they don't break mods on purpose, but they obviously can't just stop updating their game because half of the users are too lazy to SKIP THE UPDATE WHICH IS POSSIBLE AND VERY EASY!

satisfactory is an interesting example - the game is still in early access, so it's the best time to reassess what a realistic minimum spec for decent performance on the lowest spec would be, and they've recently moved to UE5, which adds a bit of performance overhead as well.

The SSD requirement just means people need slightly bigger ones or swap around some games But to be honest I’ve had an SSD since like 2015 and my total SSD capacity in 2019 was 1.5TB that raised in 2020 to 5.5TB with 1TB being in a 10gbps USB enclosure as i ran out of slots Most games should be putting SSD as the minimum requirement as most games exceed a minute or two as the loading time Tho some games actually do require an SSD to not be a stuttery texture popping mess most that state SSD can normally be ignored if you fine spending minutes at a time just loading the game and having occasional stutters and texture popping Texture popping is when either a model or texture doesnt load or load a low resolution version and suddenly jumps to the correct one after its had time to load it

@@cupboard_ well the prices have gone down while inflation has gone up Here in the UK if the price changed with inflation they would be £50 and £55 not £35 and £40 for the sata vs lesser NVMe 1TB SSD’s I payed £250 a piece for my 2TB drives £500 in total and still use them today and they have been in raid 0 the whole time I will continue to use them for at least another decade as i can use then as large external drives should i upgrade my internal ones But trust me even getting a £20 500GB/512GB SSD as a side drive which you occasionally stick a game on [as long as its not Dramless] is night and day And by swap games i mean move them between spinning rust and the SSD because unless you have 1gbps or better internet its faster to move games from rust to SSD and vice versa than it is to download fresh

Not to be elitist or anything but you can buy three SSDs for the cost of cyberpunk. You can almost buy two for the price of the expansion. There is no reason to play top tier games off of an hdd. Let's rip off that bandaid.

You mean aside from the cost of having to find and pay someone else to install it for you because you're not an enthusiest PC builder, you may not be confident in there own abilities to instal an SSD, and you pissed off the one PC guy you knew who happend to build you're rig in t he first place leaving you to rely on a PC repair shop to instal new hardware. I know it's super easy; I've done it myself and for my nephews computer a few months back ( 1 WD blue 2TB and WD Green 2TB both about 100 bucks). But, you'd be surprised how Lame your average layman is when it comes to even simple instructions, le alone installing new hardware. I mean, sure, rip that bandaid, but let's not dance around the fact that these games are getting Ridiculous with their requirements. You can NOT tell me that Call of Duty REQUIRING 100 GB of Space is because it's that good. No, it's the fault of poor optimization. Im not saying Cyberpunk isn't going to be worth it (Having played it myself, I expect that update to be pretty substantial which... Yeah, I could buy that coming from CDPR. But naw man, no way games like Battlefield or Call of Duty are even close to being well optimized enough.

@@dragon1130 The requirements of some games are getting ridiculous, but the SSD is not part of that argument. The SSD has been standard fare for budget builds for almost a decade now. They aren't saying you need a $600 SSD, just an SSD in general. It's like complaining that they aren't optimizing for APUs and only list discrete graphics cards. It's apples and oranges.

I think hard drives have been holding back a lot of games and engines. It's not load screens that are the issue anymore, it's data streaming. If you want high quality assets and modern GPUs allow us to achieve high fidelity, a big bottleneck is just getting the asset from disk into memory fast enough as the game dynamically loads what's around the next corner. SSDs should become expected requirements moving forward, and they're very cheap nowadays.
