As an aside, I had to write a library in C++ that could support data in all sorts of units for a previous employer and the goal was that all data would have to be immediately associated with its unit type when ingested because we had a nasty habit of storing data in variables and never documenting whether it was feet vs meters, pounds vs kilos, or any other units. So the goal was that it when we receive a value such as the weight of something off of a wired connection to a device, it should be impossible to store that value where we normally store it without associating a unit like kg to it. Conceptually it is pretty easy to generalize unit conversion since you’re just taking one data value and multiplying it by scaling factor to get some other unit type. Easy peasy. Until you get to temperature. F*ck temperature. Temperature is bullsh*t. Kilos -> pounds just multiply by 2.2, meters -> feet just multiply by 3.3, Celsius -> Fahrenheit just rewrite your entire generics library because you forgot that sometimes units have an offset and not just a scaling factor. Absolute BS.
@tachrayonic2982
@tachrayonic2982 Год назад
Fun fact: The reason why we call both Celcius and Farenheit 'Degrees' is becuase they are not an absolute scale, and they are offset to an arbitrary value to make them easier for us to use. Meanwhile, Kelvin and Rankine are not called 'Degrees' because they are absolute, lining up with absolute zero. The arbitrary value chosen for Degrees Celcius was to line up with the freezing/boiling points of Water I can't quite tell why the arbitrary value for Farenheit was chosen, but it ends up that 0 is uncomfortably cold and 100 is similarly uncomfortably hot for a human.
@Edward-Not-Elric
@Edward-Not-Elric 11 месяцев назад
@@tachrayonic2982I wrote out an explanation and youtube bugged out an deleted it before I clicked send. So I'll just give the abridged version. It's based on the Rømer scale. It was multiplied by 4 and further refined to make it easier to make and mark instruments by bisecting them 6 times. Also, Celsius was made around the time of the American revolution. So the colonies weren't exactly chompin at the bit to adopt things from Europe. And even the UK didn't fully adopt it until the 60s. At this point, refusal to adopt Celsius is basically a cultural touchstone. Especially with its biggest pushers being from the country they fought against for their independence.

The Metric system is very interesting to contend with in the US, especially if you're in a scientific discipline. I've memorized a good chunk of the SI units and their conversions to Imperial and back, can do them somewhat off the top of my head and it comes in handy, but we just never changed our units of measurement after we left the UK.
@gljames24
@gljames24 Год назад
It's funny because even in metric you have funny conversions like from metric to SI e.g. Liters to cubic meters, but at least that one is just a factor of 1000. Pressure is a funky one as both Atmospheres and kilopascals which is slightly off from each other. I still wish the world went with dozenal instead of decimal for math and units. On the other hand natural units are fun to mess around with.
@mcmann7149

@@gljames24 Yeah, I'm still learning the conversion to Metric from SI. Maybe after that, I can learn the conversion from Imperial to Metric finally lol
@anthonyhovens7488
@anthonyhovens7488 Год назад
@@gljames24 but even with "atmospheres" of pressure it's only ever used for comparison sake, never for calculation. The universe was also very kind to make 1atm = 101,325Pa which is close enough to 100kPa that we can just say that, for all intensive purposes, it is 100kPa. Admittedly that is a coincidence and not by design, but it's still so much better to have a system solely defined by 7 base units and prefixes in multiples of 10. In the scientific/engineering community, we avoid using imperial as much as possible. Like seriously, I'd rather use F = ma for Metric units because 1N = 1kg*1m/s^2 than have to use F = ma/g for Imperial because 1pound-mass is only 1pound-force only when a is exactly 32.185ft/s^2...

I find the societal overlap between metric and imperial hilarious sometimes. For example, here in Australia, we fully and completely switched to metric in the '70s. However, despite being born almost two decades after that change, if someone asks for my height (fairly common when you're very tall) I always answer in feet and inches, because thats somehow remained the default amd is what's expected. We also use cups and spoons for cooking measurements, but I'm pretty sure it's because that's a standard based purely on convenience (unlike the rest of the imperial system, which is a mess) and everyone has spoons and measuring cups in their kitchen.
@namAehT
@namAehT Год назад
Most recipes where around before metric became the (almost) global standard and people haven't bothered to convert them which annoys me to no end because a cup of flour highly depends on how you scooped that cup. @gpearce11
@gpearce11 Год назад
@@namAehT Which is why I appreciate a recipe that can show both (it's not that hard), but I've got measuring cups, so I can manage either way. I do switch between them quite often though, and have picked up on a lot of the rough conversions the way Linus knows them. That flowchart was so accurate it's scary. For Linus: The easiest ways I find to convert between Celsius and Fahrenheit is one of two methods => F = 1.8C + 32, which back in the day used to be taught as "multiply by nine and divide by five" but the other direction was "multiply by five and divide by nine" which always confused me, until I finally realized you're just dealing with multiplying or dividing by 1.8 instead. => Remember some simple key conversions and just scale up or down accordingly. A difference of 5 Celsius degrees (say, 10C vs 15C) is equal to a difference of 9 Fahrenheit degrees (50F to 59F). Some simple ones to remember are that 0C is 32F, 10C is 50F, 20C is 68, 40C is 104F, and 100C is 212F. Then just add or subtract groups of 5C/9F until you're close enough, and then if you're off by 1C, add or subtract 2F and if it's 2C then 4F because those are close enough to reality. Many years ago I heard a routine by Bob and Doug Mackenzie where they were talking about a close-enough approximation to go from C to F, which was "double it and add 30". For a range of temperatures from about -15C to about 35C or so, you're within about 5F of the real answer (10C is exact, and 5C and 15C are within a degree of exact). So for the kind of temperatures you look at when talking about the weather, it's actually really close to accurate, and outside that range will still get you in the right general ballpark.

Important addition, if you're traveling, measure the distance in hours

I only know 1609 meters per mile because of track. I only know 3.78 liters per gallon because some urinals have both lpf and gpf written on them. I couldn't write out the formulae for converting °F to °C and vice versa, but I can do the conversion in my head. I just use the point-slope method with the proper slope and a few known intersection points, like 212F is 100C, 32F is 0C, -40F is -40C. For example, 219F. That's 7F above boiling. 7F × 5C/9F = 35C/9 ≈ 4C. That's 4C above boiling, so 104C.

in the uk when it comes to meashering things we have almost the same situation exept that because all our sinage is in milles but we work in mm cm and meters so our measherments for guessing distance are denoted in milles and metters even on google maps. the building trade use metters exept were they dont. no one uses imperial weights exepept some people who way children in stone but for some reason adults allways in killows we do hight in feet and inches but because we dont use decemeters we jump to feet when reconing distances of bettween 10 and 20 cm and a few cm 2-4 are nearly allways reffered to in inches

Most people dont know this, but in my construction, we mainly use metric. It defintely makes things weird when the house builders and such show up eince they use Imperial

The problem with the metric system is that it's incompatible with the imperial system, which is also incompatible with the imperial system.

The UK also has a weird mix of units like Canada. Like most people I know over 40 would give their height in feet + inches, while people I know younger than than would probably know theirs in both feet + inches and centimetres. Measuring distance on a car journey I would use miles because that's what the road signs are in but for walking or anything else then metric. Liquids are always measured in litres except alcohol from a pub in pints and milk cartons in whole numbers of pints, even though they're labeled in litres. Petrol/diesel would be bought by the litre but fuel efficiency usually uses miles per gallon.

From the UK too and this is completely accurate, especially the age thing!
@TehScareM8
@TehScareM8 Год назад
Also younger people usually measure (usually but can do both) their weight in kg, but older in stone + lbs (14lbs makes 1 stone) and I'd say almost everyone now, including weather reports on TV is done in only Celsius, but other things like oven recipes might have Fahrenheit ,and also be written with imperial measurements like tsp and tbsp, instead of ml or l.
