First time I went to a dealership they offered “valet service” where they took the car I already owned and parked it far, far away, basically stranding us there. We were assigned a salesman who said he was new-he was actually the top sales guy. He quoted an insanely high price for the car I wanted that was originally a good deal. He did the whole “let me ask my boss” routine where he disappeared for hours. My wife and I saw he left his phone on the desk, which was dialed out-they were listening to us on the other end. Fuck dealerships.

If you know ANYTHING about the car business you know that there is a dwindling amount of good dealers because now the dealerships are mostly owned by big chains. More choice is better. In Europe cities are more organic, you can do what you want with your property. You can start a store in your garage. In America that's entirely illegal. Land of the free.

It doesn't end with the dealers, either. I financed my last car, because needing a new car was a bit unexpected, and when I paid it off they were supposed to transfer the title to me. Annnd... they didn't. The financing company and I went back and forth for nine months, and each time the same rep would have me complete the same form and tell me I was all set, that all I had to do was go to the DMV and the paperwork was ready. And each time, they lied -- oh, but they'd have some excuse for why my car wasn't in my name -- they sent me the wrong form... I somehow sent them the wrong form... they didn't receive it (they used this one a few times)... oh, they miscalculated the vehicle price and I still owed them some money... my paperwork was lost in the system... I owed them yet another car payment (because it had been "more than six months" since I paid the car off, which somehow works out to me owing them money)... they had computer issues that somehow messed up my paper form... it was literally every nickel-and-dime variation of "my dog ate my homework" that you could imagine! Here in Florida, by law, this is all supposed to be completed in the first 30 days after the car is paid for... and they stalled for nine times that. My tag expired around the fifth month or so, and I couldn't get a new one without the title -- so for about four of those months, I was legally unable to even drive my own car (fortunately, we were in the pandemic at the time, and I was working from home, so the trouble from that was at least mitigated). The final time, I sent them 9 copies of the form, 3 by USPS, 3 by FedEx, and 3 by UPS -- all with signature required, all notarized. There was no way they could wiggle out of it and say they didn't get it or lost it or alien ninjas stole it or whatever -- they had NINE copies, and I had the signatures to prove it. But, sure enough, they didn't get it. So instead of calling anymore, I just sent an email, in which I made it clear that I wasn't gonna play their game anymore -- I was gonna let my lawyer have fun with that. And I made sure to not only send it to the rep who was yanking me around, but to cc the CEO of the company... and the COO... and the CFO... and the Marketing Director... and the Regional Director... and like half a dozen other people with equally impressive-sounding titles. It's amazing the email addresses you can find when you're ticked off and stuck at home! And what do you know, three days later and my car is in my name, "easy" as that. I shouldn't have had to do all that -- NO ONE should have to.

"In 20 years, I won't be around to cash in. But my sons will. My grandsons will." This statement was made to sound honest and respectable and dependable. But it highlights the core problem of the car dealership system. It's a hereditary monopoly. It's a local mercantile dynasty. As long as this shit is allowed to exist, car dealerships will always screw people over, one way or another. You want free market capitalism? Then at the very damn least, live up to its principles. If you don't want strong market regulations, then at least make sure there's a market to bear down on car sales. Although, better still would be to uproot car-centric sprawl. Tax commuters their fair share for the infrastructure they use, and give the people a robust alternative to driving. The people have a right to live their lives and function in society without these giant metal tumors sucking them dry. Car dealers should not be made into purveyors of an essential product.

I hear what you're saying. And I would suggest that an inherent potential for abuse does not automatically mean such built-in opportunities for abuse are inevitable. I agree, that in our current sociopathic predatory culture, it is very likely; but if we start to better incentivize a greater moral responsibility over immediate material gain, then we can travel down a new road. Obviously, there are going to be bumps along the way; and a lot of interests, will want to turn us around; but, ultimately, it's up to us.
@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis Год назад
@@darinsingleton3553 If the system favors abuse, abuse is inevitable. The dealership model prevents accountability and it prevents market competition. People are guaranteed to be screwed over. No need for wishy-washy weasel words. It will happen. And it's a way of building unfair generational wealth. If you're the only dealer in an area, and if you're in a state that has laws on the books that essentially grant you a monopoly in that area (fun fact, corporate car stores like Tesla's are illegal in a lot of states, thanks to dealers), your kids and grandkids will get to live like vampires. Dealerships are like the twisted opposite of an estate tax.

I've been going through the process of buying a car for my daughter over the last month. When we located a vehicle we both liked, we contacted the dealer and started negotiating. Since the vehicle was located in CT, and I am in NY, the fees were a bit of an issue. NY mandates no more than $175 for doc fees, but CT has no such limit. The dealer added $796 in a doc fee I refused to pay. When I explained how NY only allowed for $175, the dealer said, "Well, if I lower it for you, I have to lower it for everyone." I knew right there the Sales Manager was a piece of garbage, so I said thank you and hung up the phone. Their total add-ons amounted to nearly $1,500; in NY, it was $450.

The problem isn't just the fees or useless finance products (like leather or paint protection). Dealerships, for the most part, keep the lights on from the service department. Walk into any dealership these days to get your car serviced, and you will be presented with several financing options if you can't pay on the spot. Car repair prices have gone up exponentially, and it is criminal that we are at a point where we would have to finance a loan on something like an oil change. I believe dealerships shouldn't exist in general, but I’m not sold on the Tesla online model either. We need to regulate things like trade-in values and interest rates. Even if we legislate things like fee transparency, dealerships will still find ways to make money from people's negative equity. It is simple, the more they sell a car, the more they make. While American culture wants to convince us there's this freedom to negotiate or bargain a deal and that it's all about becoming an educated consumer, it's all a facade. You are at a severe disadvantage no matter how much knowledge you have of buying a car; regardless, something like a car shouldn't be complicated. I'll end this with a story. One time when I was buying a car, I had been negotiating with the salesperson all day; they brought their sales manager in because we couldn't come to an agreement. I don't say this about many people, but the manager was a real POS. He tried every sales tactic on me to the point that he became furious and was guarding the door. At one point, I asked him what he did before getting into the car business. His reply was something that has always stuck with me; he told me he used to own a debt-collecting business, in which he would knock on people's doors with court orders, police present and take away all of their belongings as well as do things like garnish wages, empty bank accounts, you know just making sure people were repaying their debts. He was laughing the whole time explaining this to me; it's like he was really getting off on this. I want to remind everyone that these are the kinds of people that work in this trade (petty bourgeoisie). There are more honest and transparent dealerships, like the one in this video, but it's not the norm for the most part. It's predatorial, sick, unethical, and shouldn't exist.

My favorite thing to do is to tell them they have five minutes when they go into sales manager’s office to come out with a firm price. After 5 minutes I walk out telling the receptionist if they want my business they have to do better!

I just shop around for the car I want. Once I settle on a brand, I call every dealership of that brand in 50 miles and ask, 'What's the Out The Door price"? Last time I shopped for a car I got an OTD price just under sticker price. So I win!

Even if a dealership is not scamming me, has transparent accurate pricing I still don't want to shop there. They're a middle man. What value do they add AT ALL? Not all middle men are bad, some add value to the transaction, but exactly what value do car dealerships add to the equation? NOTHING. AT ALL. The only value they have is "You have no other choice." We consumers are sick and tired of dealerships whether they are scams or not we will take _ANY_ alternative.

Other than continuing the unethical practices of ripping people off and overcharging for questionable add ons, there is absolutely no reason why buying a car should be any different than buying something from Amazon. Pick the vehicle you want, the options you want and click buy. When your car comes in, go to the delivery dealership you selected and pick it up. Buying a used car should be the same. There is zero need for sales people or Finance officers or "closers." Buying a car has to be the absolute worst consumer experience there is with the possible exception of dealing with a building contractor.

I'm sure there's probably a lot of great tips in this comments section but the one thing that will guarantee you that you are always negotiating with the actual price you will eventually pay for the car is to tell the salesman that during all parts of said negotiation, you always want the OTD price (Out The Door $). That's sales speak for the final price after tax, title, license and whatever other fees (hidden or otherwise) will be included in the final bill😉

Other other idea We should also force u.s major banks to start giving higher interest rates in our deposits like they used to and re establish postal banks so that young people and the poor aren't disadvantage with starting out with little to no money and have an alternative to store some of their money incase of emergencies and actually generate a little bit of money for being responsible and storing their money for a rainy day. All These new changes along suggestions from my two previous post will incentivise development for high density low to mid income residential properties with close proximity to commercial businesses with walkable and bike friendly pedestrian streets and increase supply while giving people more options and having higher say. discourage high end residential, luxury homes and low density apartments from being built. Make pedestrian and bike friendly streets. As soon as people less need a car especially teenagers and young adults,they will be crying for us to come back and force to change their ways without needing ineffective legislation, as long as were not running our streets they will have their way.

I am interested in a particular toyota vehicle so I looked up that dealer and they aren't doing anything special. They're selling all vehicles at msrp which is pathetic- for example they have 4runners priced at almost 55k. That vehicle has been out for 14 years. In 2010 the starting price was $27k and the starting price for 2024 is $41k. Literally exact same vehicle. It gets older every year yet the price goes up. My point is that even if we could buy directly from manufactures, you're still gonna get screwed. It's just a joke anymore.

I think the biggest scam is in the service department. Took my car to a "reputable" dealer due to some weird suspension noise. After a day they called me saying there are all kinds off issues wrong with my car. They gave me this long list of suspension issues and quote me over $7K. When I saw the list laughed because they were totally wrong. Well almost. The only thing they got right was the tires. The rear tires were worn but front still have thread. Even if I had paid them it still wouldn't have fixed my issue because they did not even border to look at the rear suspension which was were the noise was coming from. I left them a really bad review. BTW it turned out one of the rear brake calipers was bad. The wheel was getting really hot. Paid a mechanic $100 plus part to fix it.
