I took a lesson once and I had told the girl that I had ridden a few times before so I was pretty comfortable. But when we got into the arena she asked me to canter, I had only cantered once so I was nervous. I did it and was flopping around like crazy and the trainer exclaimed very angrily “I thought you knew how to ride!” I was crushed and started to cry. I ended the lesson there. I went back to my old trainer who was very gentle and compassionate to both riders and horses.

@@BriannaHeartsHorses Completely agree, some trainers can be hella harsh for no dang reason! People work better with someone understanding and compassionate. My 2nd trainer (loved my first trainer but switched to a different barn after they were on a long break from lessons because of the summer heat) was SO rude and acted like everyone was supposed to know everything right off the bat. She also encouraged us to threaten the horse with a whip and hit them if they "stepped out of line" which I was so uncomfortable with. Needless to say, I had a breakdown one day after she yelled at me for not knowing how to hold a lead rope correctly even after asking her politely on how to hold it, and after being yelled at by the extremely rude students there too, I was completely done with her shit and told my mom everything. She obviously got really pissed, made a complaint, and encouraged her friends not to have their child ride there. I switched back to my 1st barn and now am very happy and I LOVE it there.

Gentle but firm is the best. Sorry you were in that situation, glad you got out. My old trainer has always been very understanding with all my lessons and always knows that I was trying even when I wasn’t getting it. This is actually very sad. For the first 6 (!) years of my riding I was stuck in a barn where every single person was behaving like the trainer in this video. And I was 7 when I started. I was already bullied at school, so it was hard for me to ask help from not friendly people, but I did my best to try and half of the time they just flat out refused. I don't know how on earth I didn't quit, it was horrible, but it was the only barn in the area. I'm fine now, but I still don't get why some people are this mean. Especially if their job is to deal with students

Scary how accurate this is. Luckily the first barn I went to was very attentive and they really helped me out. I recently began the search for a new barn and stumbled across the worst one yet. I’m an intermediate rider and even I was struggling. I have been to many barns where when you get there the trainers are no where to be found, and this was one of them. After I found the instructor I was given minimal instruction on where my horse was and had to go get him out in pasture. When I got back I once again couldn’t find her. I put the horse in some cross ties, but once she came back she told me I had put him in the wrong cross ties and had to move him. I did, and started grooming. But when it came time to tack up I realized I didn’t know where his tack was. I heard the trainer tell the farrier who was there at the time, that she was going to go grab some more horses out in pasture, leaving me alone and very confused. I found a border who very kindly showed me where his tack was and helped me get the saddle down. I tacked up the horse but got a little stumped at the bridle. It was a different type of bridle that I had never used before, and I didn’t know how to put it on properly. seeing as the instructor was out in the pasture fucking around I had to find another border to help me do up the bridle. I was so sick of standing around like an idiot. I was so angry and so stressed I stg I was shaking. I waited for my instructor to come back, and when she did I mounted and went into the arena. Once we were there she gave me little to no instruction and basically just told me to walk, trot and canter. So I did. But I was waiting for further instruction. Waiting for advice and criticism. None of which she gave me. I was struggling to keep my Canter because the horse kept dropping out of it at the gate, I assume he was dropping out of the canter at the gate every single time around because she was sitting on the gate and one of their horses that they just let walk freely around the farm was also standing there behind the gate. He seemed a bit nervous that she was there. She never got off or even helped me to keep the canter. I eventually managed to Canter around a few times without him stopping. Untacking was no different, I was given no assistance and she was no where to be found. I basically just guessed what to do and assumed I should take the horse back out to pasture. And if I did something wrong, oh well. It’s their fault they gave me no help whatsoever. I don’t understand how this barn has such an amazing reputation. Seriously beautiful hunter facility with two arenas and a gorgeous barn on abt 60 acres with like 70 horses, but the worst service ever. Most memorable lesson of my life. Safe to say I will not be going back.

Piece of advice, if they don’t help you on the ground, leave asap. They aren’t safe teachers. I’d never let a student catch a horse on their own without help & I have a million activities/exercises to do on horseback that I would’ve had you doing serpentines at the least. They sound like a teenager who is just there because they have to be. Riding lessons are expensive and I’d never let a student leave without learning. If a student says “I want to do something else,” during a lesson, I do what they want to do (within reason.).

I moved to a new barn last year to do extra lessons at different places to pick up different techniques. I had been riding for ages, at least 2 years. My coach put me on an easy to ride horse since she didn't know how I ride. She got my to walk and trot on a rope, then eventually helped me with my balance by trotting without stirrups and reins. She was good :)
@NordeggSonya
@NordeggSonya Год назад
I was trained as a Canadian riding instructor and then I went to Germany for an apprenticeship. Now I teach completely differently. My people go on the longe line and learn how to sit first and foremost. Then they learn to go rising trot after they learn how to sit. So they have 15 min of grooming and tacking up then half hour on the longe line and 15 min of cleaning up. After 10 or 15 lessons like this they learn to ride off the longe line around the arena and are made aware of how things go ie change the rein on the diagonal and circles and such and then they can join in on a group lesson. It is too hard for a rider to learn to control their own body and the horse at the same time. The private longe lessons actually speed up the learning time of the rider.

This video actually made me kinda uncomfortable lol 😅 When i just started I had a lot of trainers like one in the video. It also didn't help that I had a terrible social phobia. I remember many times I wanted to finish the lesson right there and had to hold back tears. Over time, I got used to such an appeal to myself, and one can even say that it helped me to calmly treat criticism in the future. However, I also notice that my self-doubt has increased. I'm not even sure if I'm taking a horse right despite the fact that I have 6 years of experience behind me. During all this time I had only 2 trainers who treated me normally, but even those abused horses and I was too scared to say something because I thought I was wrong again. Only now I have finally found a normal trainer who not only really understands his work, but also treats both me and the horse normally. however, I still shake before each training, and if I make even the slightest mistake that even real professionals can make after training, I cry.

Do your research, check with other people who are taking lessons, and watch several times to see how the trainer works with the riders. There are good ones out there. But here where I live in the western part of the country anyone can claim to be a trainer, whether they have the knowledge or not. IMO they are like school teachers. I remember some of my school teachers fondly, others, not so much. Not only do these trainers need to know their subject well, but they also need to have the heart of a teacher, a rare combination judging from the comments on this video.

So, question in regards to this. I plan to take lessons this year. I'm over 40 years old, and I'm a newbie. Long story short, what are some suggestions of what to email a barn that does teach riding, and what should I look for. Red flags, and what's actually a good barn etc. It's taken me a LONG time to get where I am now, and I will NEVER give up my love for horses. (and animals in general) Thank you.

Okay, so this might seem like a pretty lame problem, but it's a big deal to me, so hear me out. I've really loved horses (even now) since I was 10 years old. So I started going to a stable that was located pretty far from my home. For the first five months or so, I was happy. My trainer was so gentle and kind, and he helped me get comfortable with the horses. But then they suddenly replaced my trainer with a woman I've never seen before. went to the stable like every Saturday, and suddenly she was there,and my usual instructor was working with another kid. I didn't know what was going on, but it didn't seem like a big deal at the time, so I just went along with the situation. My new trainer asked me if I could canter, and I said I'd cantered only once before to make sure she understood that I wasn't that comfortable cantering. Then she asked me to canter. I had only cantered once, so I was nervous. Sure enough, I was flopping like crazy, and she stopped me. I thought she was going to explain what I did wrong out there, but instead she exclaimed very angrily that I was doing everything wrong. I was pretty shaken,of course. I was on the verge of tears when she sighed and said this was ridiculous and started criticizing me by saying how people who have been riding for one week would be better than I am, and I started to cry. She looked at me as if thinking I was an idiot, and she dismissed me. I went there a couple more times, but my new trainer always yelled at me and never complimented me for anything. I felt like I wasn't getting any better at riding with her teaching curriculum. I was so traumatized that I refused to go to the stables from then on, and I was already being bullied at school, so I didn't tell my parents what was bothering me. Of course, mom got really angry. About 2 years later, my friend said she was going to a nearby stable that her grandfather owned,and she asked me if I wanted to join her. I told her I'd think about it. I had to admit I really missed riding, and I decided to ask my parents if I could ride again. But when I did ask, mom said no. She said she was still angry that I stopped riding two years ago, and if I started now, I'd have to start from the beginning. She told me that she had wasted her money for nothing. So I decided to tell her exactly why I stopped riding from my previous stable and told her about my trainer that had bothered me. I thought mom was going to comfort me, but instead she yelled at me that I was "too weak" and that I wouldn't be able to do anything in my life if I was afraid of the people that were trying to help me. I explained to her that what my trainer did did nothing to help me. Instead, it traumatized me. But she didn't want to hear it. She said she was never going to let me ride again because it was obvious I'd quit again if there was a slight problem. So that is the whole situation that I'm going through. If anyone reads this, I'm pretty desperate, so tell me. Am I really too weak, like my mom said? Am I being childish? Please help me figure things out. Please help me.

Dang. I’m so sorry. That is a horrible experience you had at the barn. Obviously that instructor doesn’t realize it’s her job to encourage and help you become better. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. I would have quit too. I have gone to at least 10 different riding barns in order to find the right fit. Honestly most instructors aren’t great - it can take time to find a good fit! I hope your mom lets you try again and lets you try out a few barns. Maybe go about it that way. Maybe google 5 different barns and do an “intro” lesson at each one before committing to it. You can even tell them what you’re looking for in an instructor and see what they say!

Wow, in England the horse is already tacked up and waiting for you when you arrive. Some place may let you groom and tack but only under supervision and only if you want to. Id cry if this happened to me.
