Ran my first marathon in 5:24. Not fast but I finished uninjured and drove myself back home. Training for my second either this fall or next year after a year long break. As a former overweight non-runner that started later in life that moonlights as an ICU nurse I think I’m doing ok. If I can do it I am confident that with persistence you can too.
I just finished my first marathon! And my goal was definitely just to get to the finish! The weather was hot and sunny with no shade! Took me 5:10 but i finished
I tried to eat my usual dinner - a chicken and bean quesadilla - 14 hours before the race, so that I'd have plenty of time for it to, um, process. Nope - it decided to make an appearance two miles into the race. I lost ten minutes at a port-potty. But I hit my time goals, never hit the wall, and had a great first marathon!
As a Brit I always chuckle when you use the word 'bonk'. Bonk is slang for having sex here. Quite frankly I'm amazed anyone has the drive to keep running a bunch of miles after bonking...
I watched this before falling asleep yesterday. Today i've officialy became a road marathoner, on a 550m vertical course in time of 4.18h.. It was one of the most painful but also gratifying things in my life. I did it despite doing the classic bullettime 10k at 10k racepace and after that bonking and struggling with vert, distance and heat for the rest of the race while most passed me. But i still made it with quite a strong time for firstimer amateur with 1 year of running history under belt on such a course. Ive been training my ass off for this didnt have much bodily issues except the legs were killing me in last 10k. Thank you for immensely helping me with training Sage i learned alot from you.
I started running at age 48 august 2016 I've turned 49 since fell in love with the sport. I watch all of your videos , very informative thank you for you inspiration. Hoping to qualify for Boston sometime in the near future.
Pinching the cup is my favorite race tip from Sage! I ran my first marathon a few weeks ago, and at every aid station I was thinking "Wow this is such a genius move for getting all the water into me!"
the tip about how to grab the cup is an excellent one and a super small detail that i have never seen covered in a "marathon prep" video before, so very big kudos to you for mentioning that! i will definitely remember it in November for my marathon!
Pinching the cup during a race was one of the coolest tips I've heard. Thank you SO much! Used that at my last race and it worked like a charm, able to keep running while sipping the water. :)
Please do a video on your mindset during a race, and a possible difference between mindsets in longer distance races and shorter distance races. I have always struggled with my mindset during a race.
Just ran my first marathon in Raleigh NC last Sunday. Was great, I downloaded your training plan so I can knock off a few min, picked a super flat course to qualify for Boston while I finish my schooling. Planing to get a 3hr to qualify
Awesome intro good video. I’m getting ready to do my 5th Marathon ( 3rd Race) on October 26. Marine Corps Marathon!!! My pre-race meal will be 3-4 slices of pizza, 2-3 bottles of Gatorade, 4-5 hours before the race. Pizza has worked for me in the past.

Agreed, his intro is the bomb. Sage, thanks for this video. First Marathon tips couldn't have come at a better time. I'm 3 weeks out from my first marathon - yay Big Sur!- and kinda starting to freak out..
Retraining for my first marathon (I tried to train for a marathon last year in 3-4 months coming off an injury...not smart...I got reinjured after my 20 mile training run) Since I didn't train smart the first time these tips are so helpful!
Great videos Sage! I’m taking a road trip to Boston to watch the marathon and soak in the atmosphere of the event. Really cheering for you to qualify for the Olympic trials! :)
Ran my first marathon on 3:21:00. I started off conservatively and saved myself for the second half, which was about 5mins quicker than the first. I definitely left a few minutes out there and hope to push 3hrs in the next year or so.
I ran my first marathon in Athens and it was an unforgettably humbling experience. It's a difficult marathon to pace, not for beginners I think but unique. (it's the original course after all... no doing loops inside and around one city) :)
With the amount the things people need to do this today it makes it even more amazing that the original runner was able to complete the run in sandals a tunic and some water
I am at 16 mile long run at my training point right now. I try to get 8 miles a day 4 days a week and at least 10 miles on the 6th day. Mile 15-16 was excruciating. Maintained an 8 min/mile pace the entire way though :-) Never slowed down. I know I won't be able to keep that up for the full marathon, but I am sure it will help me finish my first and possibly finish before the 4 hour mark.
I ran my first marathon in 5:30, I did not train for it but I ran a lot sometimes 7 to 8 miles. I must say after I finished I could not walk, I had to ride a bicycle home. I learned a lot that day and I would like to run a marathon in America at Pikes peak Colorado. I did get an IV fluid the night before for hydration and it helped yes Army life lol but the nutrition intake was totally ignored thank God at the last stand I got a granola bar or I would have passed out. Note: when I finished that marathon in 2018 I said I would never run another marathon again, but now I might reconsider it.
Honestly, I’ve probably watched this video three or four times as I’ve been training for my first marathon. Really amazing advice/thought process, even for “virtual marathons” these days because of COVID-19. Happy to say that despite missing my goal of 3 hours and 30 minutes (we ended at 3:34:42) I learned so much about my own personal limits and what lies beyond mile 20! Time for some rest now. Thanks for all your content, Sage!
Video suggestion: What's your experience with treadmills? Do you hate them, do you love them? Do you own one? How do you use them and how do you suggest people should use one? I've read that it's a good tool for correcting one's form (stride length and cadence) and that it is a kind of cross training if you don't like swimming and biking.
Thank you, Sage for being such an inspiration. I'll run my first Marathon on Sunday and have been resorting to your Videos for tips and advise. Your and Sandi's videos are amazing, please keep on posting.
My last marathon I crashed at mile 16. I let myself get caught up with people around me and I ran faster than my target pace. I hit the wall hard!!! I hoping for a PR this weekend in Chicago
Watched this before and after my race, it's super accurate and useful. Unfortunately I missed the part about pinching cups so I halfway drowned with my first gulp.
Thanks for this. I'm running my first marathon soon, the Stockholm Marathon. I feel confident even though my training has been a bit too low I feel my mileage is climbing steady and my body feels great. My high aim is sub 4 hours, but most of all just to finish.
Hi Sage. Thanks for sharing your insights with us. You've been hugely helpful to me, as I'm sure you've been for many others. I'm training for my second marathon, and I've spent the year thus far building my base prior to starting my training cycle in earnest. Any chance you might offer your thoughts on training in the summer and determining goal pace for a race that is mid to late fall given the likelihood that efforts will adjust with the changing temperatures?
I had Gatorade at all the aid stations and I had no complaints. I somehow didn’t bonk. I also don’t think I pushed myself to 100% though, maybe only 90%, and it was very cool outside which was amazing.
such a thorough vid! i hope to run my first marathon once i have a 10k and half under my belt. it's a great goal to work up to! i'd love to do sub-55 mins in this 10k.
Hi. I am Andrei from Romania and I love watching your work, is really amazing. In October a will run my first marathon and I am targeting a sub 3h 30 min. I run a 10k, half marathon and now it's time for something new. I have one question: how is the chip working? I mean if I am far back at the start line, the chip will start by the time I will cross the starting point? Or when the first elite runners start, from that will be the time will count? I am afraid not losing too much time at the start. Thank you and good luck in the next races!
Good timing considering I'm about to run my first marathon soon. I guess this is that time of year, about 4 months out from people's New Year's resolution.
Hey thank you for all your videos. I enjoyed watching your channel, and I have learned a lot. I started running half m. a year a go and I have enjoy it I train usually 4 times a week with a long run, easy run, and speed repeats. However I want to start running in trails but I am not sure how to introduce it to my training without over workout ? Is it compatible to train for running half and full with trail running? Can I mix both ? Thank you
I'm curious..I know this is an older video. But, if you're training specifically for a marathon...why not try to run some mock marathons prior to the race at maybe a slower pace? Why not run 30 miles? Why not run 35 miles? I'm assuming the individual is trained. In other sports, we do this. In boxing, we will shift all of our training to 4-5min rounds instead of 3min rounds...it makes 3 min rounds that much easier when we're so accustomed to going full out for 5 mins.
