What is your first priority when you're in a survival situation? Survival instructors often talk about the rule of 3s. You can survive 3 minutes without air. You can survive 3 hours without shelter. You can survive 3 days without water. You can survive 3 weeks without food. You can survive 3 months without hope and companionship. I made this video as an introduction to our bushcraft series. My hope is that this at least gives you something to think about going forward into the series.

4:58 You know blowing in your hands makes them colder. The moisture from your breath can make your hands colder faster. If you want to warm your hands. Stick them in your armpits. It sucks but it does work. But make sure not to get sweat on them because your know moisture.

I grew up learning from my grandfather who was Oglala Sioux about survival, this was all passed down for generations. Survival depends on one thing, where you are located, cold or hot zone, humid or dry, this will decide which priority is first. You can go without food or water for days, but not in very cold places or very dry places, Cold weather sucks the moisture out of the air and that includes out of you, same thing with hot dry weather, you will sweat tons and will require water often. So water is always a priority. shelter is easy, water and food is hard. I can go days telling yall about survival tips. but i am sure you get my meaning.

Minecraft is cool, but if you want something a bit more realistic and immersive, you should check out Vintage Story. That's more of a long-term survival thing. There's flint napping, metallurgy, even curing and tanning. You also have to find wild seeds, and rotate your crops because of the types of nutrients in the soil.

Outstanding video and sage advice. One thought I might add is to assess your situation, be aware of your surroundings and provide appropriate protection (from whatever dangers which might be encountered).

High production and entertaining bushcraft videos will be awesome. really looking forward to this. I have seen a lot of bushcraft videos that are very informative but feel like a school lecture. With some nice editing and time planning out production this could be a really awesome video not just to watch for entertainment and information but might bring people into nature more.

Agreed. I also enjoy watching bushcraft videos, but it's often painful to get through them much of the time.

I just read an article in the NYTs about volunteer rescue organizations being overwhelmed by the need for search and rescue expeditions during this pandemic, as people go into wilderness areas unprepared for the unexpected conditions. Your series is great and helps raise awareness about being prepared for the unexpected. Thank you. Very fun too.

It's a complicated scenario that depends on weather, if you're injured, distance from "civilization" and roads with traffic. How long you could be out there. But, food is always behind shelter, bedding, fire, and water.

It's true. I still don't know why that is. Do you think they get that idea because of TV?
@rustydigger5291
@rustydigger5291 3 года назад
@@UntamedScience absolutely from tv. All the survival shows pretty much only show them trying to leave to find help. Very few show adaptation of being in a survival situation. Les Stroud did an excellent one about a broken leg and a plane crash. Most people will probably not survive a situation because they will be trying to rescue themselves by moving and it will kill them because few are able to actually handle a survival scenario especially from TV training.

Spent ten years in the bush of Alaska by myself in the total wilderness where I might go to a store once or twice a year. Priority one if you want to live long, food. Experts aren't people who live out there. What really happens and why is food the most important? I've seen this over and over with people who wanted to come out and live in nature. After three days, even with plenty of food, they get to feeling weak. After a week they feel even weaker, even with food. After two weeks they are hard to run out of the tent or cabin to go cut some wood or look for food. What happens in the wilderness is one gets drained of energy from living outside most of the time. One burns around 12,000 calories a day. Imagine what that would be like after three days out in the woods without food. If you don't get food you will be totally f&cked after three or four days. You won't have the energy to get wood, make shelter or anything else. You'll end up like McCandless, dead. Even with food one will get very tired, that's when you have to make yourself do what needs to be done, especially get food. Finding plenty of food is like berry picking or fishing. No good to pick a few berries or fish in a place with one fish here and there. You need to find the productive places. That's where you survive. Building a shelter in some non food productive place first is going to lead to starvation. Finding a place with a lot of food, harvesting what can be had, and then building a shelter makes more sense.

The 3 minutes without air thing is more like your brain can survive about 3 minutes at normal temperature without oxygen. So holding your breath isn't really the start of the clock. Your heart is still beating & circulating oxygenated blood. That's why some divers can go for 7-8 minutes. They slow their heart rate while holding their breath, which takes a lot of conditioning to do. If you're in an ice situation it slows down brain death by several increments. As long as there's someone to bring you back, you can't be pronounced dead until you're warm & dead. Not really practical info in a survivor situation but cool to think how well the body actually works!

3 days without water is crap in an actual survival situation and depending on the situation it can be as short as a few hours such as being in a rainforest

I'm a crazy person. And Proud Canadian. I don't expect anyone to understand why I went on a hunger strike, but I want to share my experience. I went without any food, only water, for fourteen days. So, I can tell you what happens. Once you've suppressed your hunger signals, they will eventually stop. Once your body knows it's not getting fed, the brain shuts off lots of functions. It was amazing. I still had rational thought, but I didn't care about anything and I had zero motivation. I just sat like a stone and everything slow down and time didn't matter. I've heard racist talk about starving people in Africa just sitting around and dying. I heard outrageous things like, "Why are they just sitting around, go find some food. Move somewhere else." Of course this is stupid, and I don't feel the need to explain why. But that's the state I was in. You just sit and wait for death or some food. You are helpless. I had all kinds of reactions. My stomach acid became intense and I lost weight, but the weight lose reached a certain level and then the lose of masses slowed. I was still wasting away, but it was a much lower rate than when I first stopped eating. My metabolism changed. Don't try this at home. However, short fasts are great for you health. We eat way too much and it effects your health. Short fasts will change your metabolism and clean up your blood. All your chemicals change when you are denied food. We evolved to go periods without food. Eating everyday, three times a day screws with your natural, evolved systems. You weren't designed to eat tons of food all day, everyday. This is unhealthy. Also, it's been years since my hunger strike and I don't plan on ever doing it again. But, it taught me so much about my body, and now I really examine what I eat and how much. I've hit my mid-life crisis stage, and I'm realizing older people eat way too many calories. I've cut mine calories down to about 1500 a day, which is way below recommended levels, yet, I still carry around a bit of a belly. Not much of a belly, but I'm trying to tell you I don't have an eating disorder and I eat a varied diet and eat junk food too. But I don't need to eat three times a day, once is enough. I eat a big supper and have a snack of junk food and I'm good to go and am healthy. I haven't been to the doctor in ten years. The only time I went was because I had a panic attack and thought my heart was going to explode. I'm fit. So, my story is meant for you to reexamine the way you eat. Oh, and the health nuts have fat all wrong. Don't eat processed veggie oils, bad, and eat lots of seafood for your brain, and take your oily fish oils for Vitamin D. Don't buy the pharma version made from other stuff, bad. Eat fish if you don't like supplements. Or, just go outside and spend some time in the woods and get some sun. Oh, and the aerosols given off my evergreens will make your brain so happy. Think naturally. And act as if you were a stone aged person and listen to your body when it's angry with you....
