David Michael Canterbury is a survival expert who co-starred on the reality TV show Dual Survival for two seasons. He is the New York Times bestselling author of BUSHCRAFT 101, which was released in 2014.
Overall, my praises of the book would be it's broad base of topics, along with some highlights such as knot tying, shelter building, and firemaking, whereas other areas of the book come up short.
In general the book lacks detail, and helpful illustrations in many caes. I found the writing to be unclear, or vague in parts ex) identifying trees (4 page chapter with no illustrations), while overly detailed in others - such as choosing a backpack.
Overall, I did learn some things from this book, but wouldn't say I overly enjoyed reading it.
If you're a fan of Dave's channel, or Dual Survival, you will likely still appreciate the book which has very favorable reviews on amazon:

There are 256 pages in this book with the index and appendices. There are 10 chapters in this book. There are recipes in this book. There is also a glossary in this book as well. Bushcraft 101 by Dave Canterbury is a good book to have in any library anywhere.

Hi, I like your review but you made a couple mistakes. You got to know Dave Canterbury. He is into survival and pioneer living. He uses the 5'c of Survivability. The language in his book is for the common man and not for the bachelor degree of literature. The traps: the conibear trap is a killing trap. It is not a holding trap. It will kill anything that passes through it. The trap is square shaped. The circular shape traps are holding trap. For the recipes, this book is not a french cuisine book. It is a living from the land book. In a survival situation, you will eat whatever you can catch. A bannock is a simple recipe bread. It's delicious and very filling. Overall, this book teaches us how to survive with bushcraft knowledge like Daniel Boone instead of being in life and death survival mode. You have to read this book in the pioneer, woodsmen frame of mind. Thanks

This book is not just for people who know everything, it is also for people who know nothing about camping and living off the land. I have 4 of his books, Bush Craft 101, Advanced Bush Craft , Field Guide to Trapping, Gathering, & Cooking in the Wild , Bush Craft First Aid.

Good honest review. I appreciate what Mr. Canterbury has accomplished but reputation alone does not guarantee a good book. I hope you have Mors Kochanski's book Bushcraft

I actually haven't read Mors yet, but intend to. I think each of us prefers some methods of communicating over others. Some are more comfortable writing, others love public speaking etc. Dave obviously has no fear of talking to an audience, and is very very good at it in terms of public speaking, but I'm afraid he's not much of a writer. At least his editor should have helped him out with this book a bit more.

I agree. In fairness to Dave, when he released the book I could tell from a video he made that he wasn't entirely happy with it. He didn't want to use bushcraft in the title. That was an editor decision. I am looking forward to reviews of his next couple of books in hopes they are better

I agree with you. There are not enough details. But I think this book is a good option for a beginner. You can give it to a child so that he would take something useful out of it. I liked the chapter on working with a compass and a map. Not bad enough, but work with mechanical hours instead of a compass, and the ability to find the cardinal points by the stars. The nodes are the simplest, of course, this chapter could be expanded. I would like a photo or detailed drawings of the plants described in the book. Although, of course, a person usually takes more detailed information on them from other reference books. In general, I think that his book deals with basic skills, such as making a fire, the ability to navigate the terrain, building simple shelters and using traps (which we never used), as well as working with an ax and a saw.

@user-qy5kb4pw8c

@@crypto2633 I don’t have one book that could give all the necessary knowledge. I believe that you need to have different books in which everything will be described in detail. Whether it's rock climbing, or woodworking, orienteering or chemistry. It is better to buy all these specialized books and gain a lot of knowledge (of which, as usual, we remember only part of it, alas) than to buy one in which there is very little knowledge and it can give you little.

@@user-qy5kb4pw8c I hear you, anywhere you think would be good to start? Like what couple of books would you recommend?
@user-qy5kb4pw8c

@@crypto2633 I think the choice of books depends on where you live. Many of the books that I have in Russia will be impossible to find here. I have a detailed encyclopedia on Kurennov’s mushrooms. An atlas-guide on medicinal plants with their photos and a detailed description of their properties and method of use. Regarding working with rope and hiking in the mountains, I cannot recommend the book since I studied with those who already had experience, some things are in training videos (An excellent British film with climbing techniques). Woodworking in the USA, similar literature is much easier to find than we have, I have Bill Hilton's book and also Jackson's woodworking bible. I'm sure if you search you will find excellent books on all these topics.

Hey man,i'm a follower of your channel because of your detailed xplanations ,but i think in this case you should have talked about the books you do recomend ,cause for me at least it's been a learning process where RU-vid became the Main source of knowledge so... some info. About books wouldnt hurt

i read this book too. a bit disappointed with it.. but what i didnt know (as well as many others) was that canterbury was planning on releasing at least one more in this series. and i agree with you about the trapping part: i suppose in a desperate situation you do what you need to do to survive, but i would avoid leghold type traps in any other kind of situation. damn miserable way to kill an animal.

Hi Dexter. Not sure I would go further into the series after the first volume. I think part of the problem is that survival/bushcraft needs to be taught visually, in person ideally. RU-vid is a better mechanism for showing techniques than describing it in a book, which is probably why his channel is much more beloved than the books. Thanks for watching :)

I love this book. 1 things I don't agree with is that is you do not know something you do not belong in the woods. Maybe you don't belong in the woods alone. But I was really young when my dad started taking me fishing, and if I did nit belong there until I new everything. I would have never learned anything. It is the only thing you said that I did not agree with. I dont know if you ment " you should not go alone if you do not know how to do some basics". Over all good review I have the complete set of these books. I would recommend them to someone with alittle knowledge, there are better books on specific skills for sure but over all the full set is not to bad and has a lot of knowledge that is good to know. This video will make me watch some of your others. :)

Review was ok till you started with your opinion on trapping lol like no one gives a shit about your opinion with animals being trapped if people are interested in trapping you have to take an actual course in most states before you can actually trap so you know what your doing before going in the woods this section of the book is more like an introduction to trapping and you do alot more learning than this before you are actually trapping
