All you need to know to make a functioning and useful cat shelter. If you found this video useful, don't keep it to yourself and share it with others! #catshelter #DIY #straycats
@@vidpeek if you make a cat shelter, please use the materials I suggest. That includes sheep's wool (ask ur local farm if they have wool) That includes blankets too (keeps cats warm) That includes hamster bedding ( not really for a cat to burrow but comes in handy) and that's all :D
Yes unfortunately after telling us to use straw they show a sample shelter with a cat using it several times and it has a green blanket inside it. So that was a little boo-boo.
I want to add to the construction of these containers. The video instructs to use flaps out of rubber and other materials. That container is small and the oxygen can quickly be used up. Do not create a sealed unit by using a flap that does not allow air to enter. If you do then drill vent holes on sides near the top. Just FYI.
i used an old wooden chest. It was 3 feet long. 1.5 feet high, and aboout 1.6 feet wide. I drilled some air holes in the bottom, lined the inside with styrofoam (except for the air holes), cut a cat size hole at one end of the long end. put an electric kennel warming pad inside at the other end of the chest, and finally put an insulated antechamber in front of the entrance hole. I put the chest on a sheltered part of my front porch out of the wind and rain. We then put out an electrically heated water bowl near the chest and fed the cat at least twice a day.
I'm in São Miguel Portugal and it's sad to see kittens all wet and suffering the cold weather with strong winds and rain. I will need to search for these totes as we do not have Wal-Mart stores and Costco here. Thanks for sharing!!
This is amazing!! I’ve sadly seen a pick up in cats in the neighbourhood with the colder weather coming this is something I really want to do with the ones in my neighbourhood. Thank you for making this video ❤
In many of the other videos I've seen, they said to not put a 2nd door in and especially not in the colder parts of the country. They've mentioned that the opening shouldn't be more than 5 inches across or other animals will be able to get in there (racoons, coyotes, dogs, wolves, ect). You can put a piece of vinyl kitchen tile on the bottom to keep them from scratching through the bottom.
Thank you! I didn't know to use straw instead of newspaper or blankets and towels! I live in Central Florida but it does get cold especially in Winter!
This is fantastic video. I already made a large plastic box bed but been wondering why local strays haven't entered the box. I need to make another escape hole. Also bin the blankets and order some straw and buy emergency foil blanket
It depends on if you are in an area where predators are present. I hear coyotes almost nightly where I live. I've seen a couple comments from people who have sadly found out the hard way
This is epic. Thanks for making this video. What a kind heart you have. And becoming my inspiration too as a cat lover for a stray cat in my neighbourhood

I know that people and animal welfare use traps to catch feral cats, and who knows what they do to the more trusting cats that are trapped. I would say these feral cats are smart and aware it could be a trap. It's survival instinct. They need to learn trust, and humans need to show patience. When you least expect it, they may start to use the shelter. Remember, not everyone likes feral cats, and traps are set to....well, you know.
@@weaverzone Yes, I've had to use some very strange spellings to make text to speech programs pronounce certain words correctly. I'd have tried something like "stairowfoam" or "styrifome" to see if that worked.
Problem I encounter with feral cats is, that they to sleep where ever they go but not in the shelter i made for them I put a straw all sides are insulated and waiting for heating pads to arrive. I put some food in there, a sprinkle of cat nip and they ate the food but at night they dont even go close to a shelter. I hope the heating pads may help once they feel warmth in the air but I would not bet on it, Im afraid that a possum may take advantage of the shelter and then they will never get into it. Any remedies to entice the cats to the new shelter?
@@bradtinakids Thank you, tried cat nip they sniffed it and got crazy but did not go in, Ill try some snacks but there is a competition for food/snacks ... the possum LOL
Lot of good ideas and information. However the robotic computer reading is annoying. Human voicing is much better even if one is not very good, but preferable. Over time you can get better, even if you speak different language, I think someone would be glad to do voice over, and for a good cause like this for free...just a thought...
I've never heard Styrofoam (pronounced sty-ro-foam in the US)) pronounced sty-roff-ham before. I had to replay the video a couple of times to make sure. To each his own.
an initiative made by girl boyscouts. why, because girls have the natural habbit of caring. and it irritates me to see that again they hardly get the credits for this. howcome all these cats are strays? what happend?
