“In the bag”Absolutely love the video and would love to be able to go some where for this style of club by club fitting no matter the model. But there is just no where (that I know of). Always just get a set after test a 7 iron. 😢

“IN MY BAG” are all second hand clubs since I’m still a new golfer (6 months in). Just broke 100 for the first time yesterday with a 99. Still riding the high from that. Golf is the most fun thing I’ve ever done sports wise in my life and I’m actually glad It took me to age 27 to pick it up because I’m so grateful for every second I have on the course and just so very happy I’ve found this amazing game. Thanks for all you do, Mark and Matt. You’ve both helped my development of my game more than you could ever know. Love from Pennsylvania, USA.

I'm so glad you guys found golf so young! I'm 43 and started playing 6 months ago. Decreased flexibility and arthritis are definitely a problem for me. Please enjoy this game every chance you get while you're young! Breaking 100 was an amazing feeling, I agree, now let's set our sights on 90....

Since I went to 4 specialized wedges I actually hit more tee shots to wedge distances where before I would always leave 6-9 iron distances. more wedges defo give me confidence/options to hit it closer to the green.

“IN MY BAG”. It’s a hodgepodge of different clubs from different sets. I picked each one over time because of how well I hit it and the confidence each one brings me. Still love trying new clubs and swapping one or two out every year or so. Gives me the feeling I’m playing with the latest tech of clubs that improve my game. It’s just fun.

"IN MY BAG" : 1-2-3-5 woods, 3-5-6 hybrids, 7-PW, 52° and 60° wedges, Putter. The 2 wood is an experiment to see if I can get to the green on long par fours with it. Before the 2 wood I was carrying a 6 iron and the 6 hybrid. I gravitated to this from watching Mark's videos over the last few years. My bag is a forest of headcovers.

Recently changed what's in my bag, was playing 50/54/58 in wedges but now play 52/58. The wedge change gave me an opportunity to change the top of my bag, so now I have 2 hybrids, an H1 set to 21° & an H2 set to 18°. My driver is 9° & my 3 is 14°. Manufacturers are all different, Callaway, Titleist, Mizuno & Vokey. Yes I still have a 4 iron.

It never ceases to amaze me how many viewers some other golf youtube channels have.... there are some I occasionally watch for fun, but for true information and coaching etc crossfield, TXG and mygolfspy are by far the best. Most of the other golf youtube channels just offer the same old cliche crap over and over again, peddling worn out sales lines with each new model release. And yet it’s clear that millions of viewers would rather buy into that nonsense and appease themselves and their egos rather than actually try to learn and improve in any measurable way. As always, thank again for the many hours of enjoyment you provide!

"In my bag" - Really good to hear you and coach talking through your bag Mark. I feel like I have been learning from you over this year because "in my bag" is Driver, 3 wood, 16 hybrid, 20 hybrid, 23 hybrid, 5 & 6 iron MP20 HMB, 7-9 iron MP20, T20 wedges 47, 52 & 57. Oh and my putter brah! I am so much more productive now from 160 to 220 out, giving myself great looks at birdies now whereas before it was hard work for my par.

@craig3775 4 года назад
Thank you Jim for your considered reply. I am almost 50 years old and have been playing this mad little game since I was 5, running after my dad with a cut down 5-iron up in bonnie Scotland. I am now in the South West of England and play links golf. I play in winds which average 15 mph and play a few times per month where the winds reach 20-25 mph. My remit was simple, I wanted the penetrating flight of my 2, 3 & 4 irons but I didn't want to be discouraged by tight links lies and I also struggled to play the high gentle fade shot with my longer irons. I tested some woods like you mentioned and then tested hybrids. I too preferred the woods for all the reasons you mentioned above. However, I had the opportunity to have my hybrids custom made for me. A PGA Pro friend of mine designed the hybrids to my specifications. I wanted them to be the same club length as the corresponding irons, not the longer club length of hybrids and woods. He chose shafts to be stiff, shortened and tipped with a high kick point to allow the hybrids to fly lower with ease. I can easily manipulate the clubs to fly high when needed but I wanted them to be naturally low flying due to the breezy conditions I play in. I have been using 16 degree, 20 degree and 23 degree custom-made hybrids for a few months now. I can play them with ease out of any lie on the course and they hit my 2 iron, 3 iron and 4 iron numbers with comfortable ease. I can push them beyond and below their individual yardages without the same problems I found with the irons. I am not saying that I am right and you are wrong Jim, I quite agree with the points you made. I would just not change my hybrids for anything because they do exactly what I wanted them to do and fill me with confidence each time I pull them for a shot. I think the message is what Mark has been saying for years, test, collect data and customise your bag for what you need. Thank you for your reply Jim, best wishes. Craig

My weird gaps happen around my 7 iron. I use a Hot Metal Pro 7 but my 6 iron goes the same distance so I’ve started using the new Cleveland UHX Launcher 7 which goes 12 yds farther than my HMPro. So I carry two 7 irons. Then I go to a 6 hybrid (Ping G 410). These changes give me a high trajectory on 160 to 175 yard shots. The I have 9 wood, 5 wood and driver. I don’t use a 3 wood. The hotter Cleveland 7 iron gives me a boost exactly where I need it...more distance without losing any trajectory. Your ideas about set makeup have had a big influence on how I can keep playing in spite of my advancing age:) Thank you Mark.

In my bag. As always a terrific video. As a 14 handicapper, I’d feel hesitant to tell a fitter that I want to change my set the way you did. You obviously know what your doing and have the talent to properly utilize such discreet choices. For someone like me, don’t know if it would honestly be a difference from simply getting a single brand that’s just properly fitted. Anyway, love how you’re always looking for different ways to help gofers improve. Thanks for the video.

Your best video yet. I game a combo set too, though not as complicated as yours: 4&5 G410 irons, 6-Gap in i210, then 54&58 Glides. I noticed I had a gap at 190y recently which is exactly the distance on two of our opening holes. I plugged that gap with a 3-hybrid and made my first birdie in years on one of those opening holes.

‘IN MY BAG’ Superb video, gents. I have a habit of being seduced by full sets of irons which, in truth, are probably beyond my capabilities to play, then slowly phase them out with the ‘friendlier’ version. My Titleist T100s are slowly disappearing, in favour of T200s. Two old-ish Adams DHYs have just toppled my 4 and 5 irons and love them.

I tried the blade in a 9 iron, ZX7 7 iron and ZX5 5 iron today. They felt great. I thought I had grabbed an 8 iron in the blade, and was hitting some around 155. I thought, "oh well, I'm losing a little distance with the 8, but that's what a blade might do, and I looked down and it was a 9 iron. They all felt great. I was hitting the 5 iron 220 yards, and it felt easy and really good.

My club make up this year has gone the opposite direction. According to Arccos the clubs on the top end of my bag were all running together and there was a gap on the lower end. My set wedges were hotter than my specialty wedges leaving a gap. My solution was to take out my 21 degree hybrid, 4 iron, 5 iron and 54 degree wedge. Added a 7 wood and 25 degree hybrid, 52 & 56 degree wedge. So now I have Driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, 25 degree hybrid, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, 48, 52, 56 & 60. I’m getting much more height and more carry with the 7 wood and 25 degree hybrid and my gapping has improved from top to bottom. I now feel like every club has a use and I have confidence in every club. My handicap index has come down to the lowest it has ever been, 4.9, and I’ve had my career lowest round three times this year. Next goal is to have a sub 70 round. Fine tuning my bag has made a significant difference in helping me achieve this year’s goals.

Driver, 3 wood, 18° driving iron, 3i-PW blades, 56° and 64° wedge all changed at different points in time. Most shots lost in a round are short game. Been wanting to get a proper fit for a while but have not had the time. I'm one of those people who'll keep the blades in the bag even in the long irons just because I like the look and feel. I have compared cavities and hybrids in the top (on course) and don't see enough of a difference to worry about it.

I’ve completely changed out my 13 year old bag - irons (4-PW), driver, 3 wood, 2 utility iron and 3 extra wedges (48, 52, 60). Was fitted for all but the wedges as I’m a pretty solid wedge player. Like what you say about managing the bag. I will also get fitted for a 5 wood or 2i/3i hybrid. I typically will drop out either the 2 utility iron or a wedge in favor of the 5 wood/2i/3i - depends on the course that I’m playing. Biggest issue I’m finding is that the new irons are stronger lofts - still figuring out my new distances.

I take your point, but I simply can’t get on with hybrids. So I have far fewer places to go to when I get to the long clubs. I can hit hybrids consistently and long, but it could go absolutely anywhere, left, right, dead straight, anywhere! So that leaves irons for everything up to about 200.

24 H/C - Currently gaming T200 irons, 4i to GW Mack daddy 60deg Callaway Rogue driver XR 3 Wood U510 2 iron Rogue 5i hybrid (Barely hit these days) Interesting comments by Coach about amateurs using the low/long irons. I've recently added the 4iron to the bag and replaced my hybrid with the U510. Reasoning was that the feel, weighting etc felt more consistent through my set and found it much easier to hit vs a hybrid where the weighting etc was a big jump. Main benefit for me though - if i mishit a long iron, it doesn't go far. If i flush it, the direction is almost always good. I can flush a hybrid or short wood and still spin it miles off line into trees, or do the same with a mishit. "Horses for courses" i guess, but really interesting to hear Mark's similar comments on blending the "feel" of the clubs

I have a similar setup but I pulled the 3 wood for the extra wedge. Just felt like I didn't need it since the distance wasn't much more than my 17 deg hybrid. "In my bag" I have a 60, 56, 52, 46 wedges which has given me more confidence from 80 to 140 yards with full shots. After that, I carry 9-5 irons and 22, 19, and 17-degree hybrids along with my driver and putter. That gives me 10 to 15-yard gaps from 80 yards out to 240 and my driver which I avg 265.

Tucson Jim I get what you’re saying but at the same time you have to live and be able to spend money aswell. I suppose it depends on the person. If you cant play regularly and would only be able to play once every now and again then yes theres no point. But if you’re passionate about golf and like to get a few good games in a week then why not spend abit. Like gman14444 stated, it comes down to money etc. Its true we all have different budgets etc so do what suits you best.

Well I just bought Cobra Radspeed one length irons. It was a great decision. I like the one length because being 6’2” and having had five low back surgeries bending is a problem. I bought 5- sand wedge. Cannot say enough how good they feel. One strip position one swing just don’t see why so many of the teaching pros are so down on one length.

I currently only have 11 clubs in my bag. Driver and next is a 4 hybrid. After that 5 to 9, P and S in my TaylorMade RAC OS irons and then a 60 degree wedge that I happened to pick up. I dropped the 3 and 4 irons from my bag even though I can still have the club head speed and can hit them well, just not consistently enough. If Vitamin M permitted I would seriously consider getting fitted for each individual club

Hey Mark, good stuff here. ... "IN MY BAG" I have putter, 3 wedges, 6 through 9, then I have (2) 5-irons of different makes and models, 2 hybrids, 3 wood and driver. Sometimes I pull out one of the 5 irons and put in another wedge.

just swapped out 3 wood for 785 hybrid 16 deg. no loss of distance but more consistent and better flight. got 585 4 iron and 785 upward. just can't seem to get on with higher lofted hybrids. bag set up works for me now. just deciding between 3 hybrid and 3 utility.

Confused why you're saying the gaps between 7-8-9 is good and where you want it to be when there's an 18 yard gap in carry distance between 7 & 8 surely that's way too big?
@IamNexu
@IamNexu 3 года назад
It's a bit of a mess for most golfers honestly. 6i launcher 185 then 22 hybrid 218 is even worse. But Mark is an extreme example of someone who wants to manipulate his shot shapes and distances. I think a 12-15 yard gap between each of your 6-7-8 irons, then focus on just hitting one shot shape is a better strategy for 95%+ of golfers. Scott Fawcett has some interesting data/opinions on just hitting one shot shape over trying to work it both ways like you're a PGA tour pro.

I'm on the opposite side of things. The tees that my group plays at is roughly 6000-6200 so I have 180-220 maybe 3x a round on Par 5s. I was actually talking over the weekend about taking my 4iron out since I haven't hit in 2 months and putting in a 62 very low bounce wedge (Currently have a 58/54) for tricky bunker shots or when I need a spinning 25yard shot. I am having those types of shots more often with the tees I'm playing because I can hit driver 270 and 3wood 245 so a 370-yard par 4 is just a little 54 in and on some holes depending on conditions I'm within 60 yards quite frequently. I guess the point is, if I was going to go back 1 or 2 sets of tees I would need to have more of this approach but at the current tees, I don't have a need for anything over 180.

I’m currently in the processing of “building my bag” after wanting to get back into golf and these videos are very helpful. I am guilty of going for “a set” of clubs but have been for a fitting. Largely though which videos like this I’m settling on making the set of clubs a 6-PW and then bringing in three wedges that gap the bottom end first. The modern more forgiving clubs are so strong lofted that there is a definite need for 3 wedges (PW’s are sitting at around 43 degrees) so need around a 48, 54 and 60 for my game. At the top end I’m jumping into a DHY 22 degree (the 6 iron is 25 and the equivalent 5 iron of the set is 21.5 so this makes sense to me) as it just helps a little with more forgiveness and launch. After that I’m still stuck at how best to build the rest at the top end so I’ll be going for another fitting and trying to find out more about my own game to work out what’s best! If anyone has any ideas it’s always welcome as it helps with the research!

In my bag - a blend of brand love and fitting. Ping putter - just cos i grew up with them, Ping D, 3W and 19 Deg hybrid. Gives me confidence in the 200 range, Then i went for Mizuno MP 18 3-PW ... mentally cos i love the look, battling with my ego to drop the 3iron and go for 4 hybrid. Wedges 50/52 depending on course, 58. I did this cos i wanted more long clubs.

I'm currently working on sorting my bag right now since I have some gapping issues (have been told my GI irons get too hot if I catch one really pure, distance control is almost non-existent). TaylorMade M6 D-Type 9 degree Driver TaylorMade M2 3 Wood (have a TaylorMade M1 2H that I may use instead since a 3W goes too far for me) Titleist U500 2i (arguably my best club off the tee and goes the distance my 3W should) Cobra SZ Irons 4-GW (the yardages are starting to clump together as my swing is naturally and comfortably going faster, every once in a while I catch one really hot and for example I'll get a rocket ship 7i shot that will carry further than my 6i normally does) Titleist Vokey SM 52/56 (love these) Scotty Cameron Red X-5 (may trade this for something that is balanced differently for my stroke)

I've been totally focused on gapping and "easy to hit" clubs for years. At 54 yo, playing off 5-6, my game relies on straight balls, not bomb balls. I have almost as many clubs with head covers as irons! (driver, 5w, 4-6 hybrids, 7 iron down to wedges). The whole bag is designed to hit fairways and greens. Not win long drive contests. LOL Cheers boys!

I have a Toptracer range near me and it has transformed my bag and game. I get all my launch data except spin. Witch led me to realize I get nothing out of my beautiful blade iron 6 and 5 or 4 for that matter. Switched to ping i500 in 5. 6, and 7. Added a crossover 4 and rounded out the top with a 5 wood and driver. Would never have thought to use this combination of clubs without the data from the range

Good stuff guys. I think getting yardages between say your 3 iron down through the wedges to be around 10 yards, 11, or what not is more important than putting a bunch of hybrids in your bag. Your swing is good enough to hit long irons, and the reality is I feel better with a 2, or 3 iron in my hand when hitting a stinger than a club that is designed to launch higher for tee shots. How often do we have 220 on up coming into a green? Most low handicappers hit it long enough with driver these days to not have that shot often at all.

I was fitted about 5 years ago and created a blended set between Callaway Apex pros (8-PW), and Apex (5-7). I carry 3 wedges (60, 56, 52) a 22 degree hybrid, a 3 wood, and a driver. I suffer between that 180-220 range and liked your approach…am in the market now for new clubs having just went through getting my second hip replaced…now I have a much freer swing, but with age, have lost some speed….so, looking to get a blended set again, but need something with more distance. My contact is not an issue, so prefer more of a players iron…looking at the Srixon ZX7/ZX5 blended set…but will take a look at what you did a little closer…Thanks!!

I've just put a 24° 5 hybrid "in my bag" and it has given me so many more options. I have used it successfully out of fairway bunkers, to dropping it and stopping it on greens from 190 out. I like the idea of starting the blending earlier down the irons. I'll give that a go when I start testing for a new set!

I go 3w, 5w, 7w, 4h, and only use 3 wedges (48, 54, and 60). I like having more options at the long end of the bag; it’s far easier to retain spin on a partial wedge than it is to finesse a long club into a green. The 3w is more of “max off the ground club,” while my 5w, 7w, and 4h give me high launching, high spinning shots to hit and hold greens. Only having 3 wedges is also fine because I finesse a wedge and still hit my numbers. Loving the setup.

60 56 52 Cleveland RTX4 wedges, they just gap right for me. Callaway Rogue 9 8 7 6 irons again they gap just right. Yonex Ezone GT 22 Hybrid and 15 degree 3 wood, Yonex Ezone GS 10.5 driver I’m waiting on a 19 degree Hybrid but unfortunately funds dictate what is in the bag. With my gap test I always use average distances and regularly gab test my clubs. And an average test of 10 shots per club. It works for me.
