My boy just won’t entertain the inside stairs but will go up and down concrete steps outside.

I once bought a doberman pinscher 15 months old so fully grown. she was raised in a bungalow so didnt know stairs. after a couple days in our house, she really enjoyed the leash but really worried about our tall staircase so i put her leash on, walked her closely to me up one stair, then down, up two stairs, then down, kept practicing with her, she was leaning on me going down for confidence, but we kept at it, a little every day, within a week she could go up and down, although going down she wd lean on me from the top, for confidence, but within 2 weeks she could bound up and step down all the way by herself. I NEVER pushed her TOO FAR in the confidence realm, otherwise u overtax them mentally/emotionally and they will forever after worry about it. i wd NEVER expect them or force them ALL the way up or down the first few days, but if theres a TREAT at the top stair (of the level you chose that day, could only be the 3rd stair eh) then THAT encourages them smartly!

Found this very useful. I am picking my my grey tomorrow and have steps going down to my house that I'm anxious about. Wish me luck 😂

You can do it! Outside steps often seem to be easier for them 🤞

I couldn't imagine looking at those eyes, and not letting them come up to bed.

Awww... They are fine downstairs, but thats all they've known. Its much harder to change to downstairs if they got used to upstairs

I think that it would be helpful to start stair training on a less steep set of stairs (broad steps with a small increase in height), and then build towards steeper sets once your dog has some confidence

Yes that is definitely useful to help them get the general idea!

I turn on the lights for my boy, as I can tell he's struggling with the shadows. Every now and then he seems to get a fright and loses his confidence, but the step-by-step method of moving his legs one at a time gets him going again after a few tries. He will try and jump them all though if I don't watch him.

Yes I've come across that. They see better than us in dim light but brighter light does seem to help

Our first Grey had no problem with the stairs at all despite assurances from the Homing Charity that he would probably ignore them. Our second (and current) Grey wouldn't entertain the stairs in the house at all. He'd have no problems with stairs outside, including quite steep ones - But in the house, he'd just stand and stare at the bottom of them and just wait there for us to come back down. We tried to enourage him with the lead, put treats on each step, throw his toys up the stairs etc - No go. Didn't want to know. That was until we booked a holiday home which didn't allow Dogs upstairs. The first thing he did in that holiday home? - Yep, went up the stairs. When we got back home he used the stairs freely and with no problem at all, like he'd been doing it all his life! You never know when they're going to just "get it" 😕

Wow this is incredible. We’ve had our greyhound girlie for 1 year and she’s never attempted the stairs in our house. She goes up and down stairs outside though. We’d love her to come upstairs freely though but we’d never force her. Totally up to her 💖💖💖

My greyhound is fine with some stairs; he easily manages the first set in my house which are curved, but will not go up the upper set which are straighter....... and yet, he will happily bound up and down the steep steps on an old railway footbridge near us. My house was built in 1833, and each flight has a skylight above it, and both sets are carpeted, but he is just not interested in the set to the top floor at all. Not even chicken on every step will get him up there lol!
