☞ Welcome to my guide to hiking the Poukai Circuit on Mt. Taranaki. The Pouakai Circuit is a 25km (15.2 miles) loop that takes you around the majestic Mount Taranaki. Some crazy souls take on this massive hike in a single day but I recommend spending a night at both Holly hut and the Pouakai Hut making the trip a total of 2 nights and three days.
Why is that? Well, this whole area also happens to be a photographer's dream. Just 15 minutes away from Holly Hut you have Bells Falls and the Ahukawakawa Swamp and 30 minutes away from Pouaki Hut is the famous Pouaki Track Reflective Tarn. As you'll see in my video, this tarn's reflection is begging to be photographed, and as any good photographer knows, sunset and sunrise are the best time for it. I didn't want to miss out on the action so I grabbed my sleeping bag and shacked up at my third hut in New Zealand.
Aside from that, a stay at the Pouaki Hut is an experience and gives you more time to enjoy (and photograph) the Pouaki Circuit.

For those who are short on time, you can make it to Pouakai hut by taking the Mangorei track to reach Pouakai Hut in 1.5 hours. Watch the video for more details.
