Thank you! Totally agree - it was very demanding, specially for someone like me who had no idea of what’s involved…

It is very sensible to be scared and cautious. An early start is essential and if the weather begins to change get off the mountain. The wind increases to the point of not being able to stand up and cloud cover negates visibility. It takes 6 hours return if a person is able to keep walking and see where they are going, because the weather can change to the extreme in 15 minutes.

Totally agree with you, Allan! This understanding comes with experience or a shortcut is to just believe climbing gurus when they say “don’t risk if don’t know what you’re doing”…

Well I guess I naturally gravitated towards adventure and outdoor but it was scary to try something that hard for the first time ever for sure!

I'm Swiss and had the privilege to climb Mt Egmont 1970. I remember the perct walk/scramble to the top and the heavenly view from there. Great memory till today. P.s. I like the name Waranaki better.❤

Oh we wonder how much different was the mountain back then? The views must have been the same - stunning and jaw dropping! Oh yeah, this mountain has a rich history too

Brave girl, I've been hiking for awhile now and I'll find 1500m elevation challenging, so kudos !! Would you say a Personal Locator Beacon is needed or is the route pretty crowded in good weather conditions?

Thank you, John! Mt Taranaki is definitely a pinnacle of many hiking endeavors… If you plan to ascend via the Northern summit route now (ie February-March) on a weekend day in a stable weather then I’d say you’ll see many fellow hikers/climbers who will be able to get help in anything happens. However, it’s quite possible that you won’t encounter many people if you go later in a season (btw if there is any snow you’ll need at least crampons) via a different route or on a week day. Our first climb of Mt Taranaki via the classic route was on a long weekend and we had hundreds of hikers alongside. When we did our second climb via the East Ridge route on a week day we didn’t see a single person until we rappelled down into the crater. Good luck in your climb of Mt Taranaki!

Thank you, Denis! Stratford area is very peaceful. We’ve been there four times already and will keep coming because the mountain and it’s surroundings are just magically beautiful.
