You may have heard there are bugs in your gut. But do they matter?
Today, the evidence shows the answer is a resounding yes. This ecosystem of tiny microbes living in our bodies is one of the most exciting areas in medical research, linked to everything from metabolic to mental health.
So while many of us have heard that gut health is essential, few of us understand why and what we should do to support our gut bacteria.
In this episode, Jonathan speaks with Will Bulsiewicz to find out when our microbiome begins to form, the most effective ways to support our gut health, and the role these gut bacteria play in controlling our weight.
Will Bulsiewicz is a board-certified gastroenterologist, and New York Times bestselling author of the microbiome book Fiber Fueled.

This gives me an idea for a sci fi novel. Or a conspiracy theory. What if, the gut microbes are actually an ancient intelligent race, who genetically engineered organic machines in which to live, and for transportation. They engineered their organic machines to feature complex computers and a massive array of sensors so it could be semi autonomous. Then with each subtle improvement of their design, they developed artificial intelligence, and their huge, organic machines, became self aware, and started to believe that the community that built and maintains them is nothing more than a worthless sludge of insignificant microbes.

As always, I enjoyed this very much. I found all the backdrop of the particular microbe that developed without oxygen particularly fascinating. The astonishing research on newborn babies being exposed to these microbes so early left in awe. Knowing how my own babyhood was swamped in antibiotics for various illnesses which then led onto lots of autoimmune disease later in my life also gave me lots of interesting insights. The final message that a great variety of plants in the diet, good relationships and sleep, most health issues are fixable, is always a great way to finish.

I'm finding all these podcasts on the micro biome very interesting. It confirmed my suspicions that despite having an excellent organic high veg diet as an adult and good lifestyle habits, my gut health is not good (I'm Ceoliac various auto immune diseases) and this may have started from childhood where I was bottle fed and neglected, poor diet etc. As a young adult I also had a couple of years where I had quite a few rounds of antibiotics. These talks are fascinating and furthering my understanding on the topic. Hopefully we will get to that stage where we can have an injection of healthy micro biomes that will drastically help people not just like me, but with more serious health issues

As a retired scientist who saw a hint of this amazing journey in the early 2000s, I saw the difference in the immune cells in piglets raised in a sterile environment (gnotobiotic) and normal ones, I am incredibly excited to hear this. The gnotobiotic ones had no immune cells at all in their guts. I recommended that my grandson born in 2005 should not be kept too clean….

I've watched several quite plausible RU-vid videos recently that suggest that having sufficiently strong stomach acid is vitally important to digesting proteins properly before they are released from the stomach into the gut and that having stomach acid that is not sufficiently strong might be a root cause of some food allergies. Is this true and, if so, is betaine HCl likely to help or would other treatments be better? Are there any tests for stomach acidity? How long would it take to build the strength of stomach acid to the necessary levels if it is too weak? How long would it take for a leaky gut, caused by allergies to proteins, to heal?

This is fascinating. Here's a possibility that may be worth consideration. In my 20s I was married to a woman who was very skinny. I had always been skinny since childhood. I got divorced and formed a new relationship with a woman who whilst not obese is a lot heavier than my first wife. Within 12 months of us living together I started to put on weight and over the last 30 years together I have put on a lot of weight to the point that I am slightly obese. Could it be that my current wife's microbiome has transferred to me and caused my increased propensity to being overweight?

How reparable is the gut after the micro biome has been regularly damaged/destroyed? In the 1950s, my father, who had Victorian rules, lined up his 5 small children ( under 10 years old) and fed us laxatives, weekly! He maintained, perhaps partially correctly, that if people’s bowels were clogged up they would have really bad skin: spots, boils etc. Well none of us ever had acne but as we are all now in our seventies and suffer bowel problems. For a couple of years I have concentrated hard to repair my system but don’t think I’ll ever win. Any thoughts?

8:51 funny you should mention the skin microbiome - I had a red patch of skin on my face, diagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis since the age of 16; I've had it for decades and used all sorts of treatments. As soon as I understood it was caused by a strain of yeast that's evolved to digest sebum, and the waste product is a fatty acid which causes the red skin irritation, I stared taking extra care to use soap (kills microbes) and use a face cloth to exfoliate _in a deliberate attempt_ to alter the conditions on my skin to make it less hospitable to whatever was there - it works and as long as I keep my particular morning abultions the symptoms are held at bay indefinitely (several years, so far).

For the western audience this is a wonderful information but funny enough some of these issues discussed are well known in some cultures in African societies not vandalized by the brutality of western imperialism and in China and India and it subs. I say this because what my grand parents who departed many years ago knew about medicine appears to be far more advanced than what the western medical society is talking about. Their incredible knowledge of plants and it medicinal importance and a whole lot of stuffs. Ability to diagnose medical abnormalities accurately and simple treatment and lifestyle changes amazes me when I looked back at how humanity has drifted from sanity in the name of modernity. Some of these knowledge well communicated to us without even knowing that's what our parents are doing. Today I treat cancer, ulcers, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and many more medical conditions with simple things in nature. I hope the medical societies will be more broaden in their understanding of what medicine is.

None of the things you list need “treatment” the body is entirely available of healing itself, we just need to get out of the way. Adding more pollutants and toxins, even plant based and “natural” remedies increases the burden. Cancer is the body’s way of packaging up those toxins, but if people keep living like they were, or worse, going nuclear on themselves with chemo etc, it puts even more strain on the body. All the other conditions you listed are also able to be relieved/reversed by removing the causes of inflammation. Totally preventable and reversible by taking away not interfering harder.

So far I am in agreement with what he is saying apart from going into Evolution Theory & stating an exact time these things existed on the Earth which was without oxygen. Who really knows? I also do not like the way this person states you are are not a 100% a man etc. Speaks about gut bacteria but leave Evolution & when the Earth was created & existed out of this. I came to listen about gut bacteria & how to improve it. it. I happen to be a Christian who does not believe in the Evolution Theory. I think it takes more faith to believe a person, man, happened to be created by chance. With everything we know now that Darwin did not know, even about a cell thinking it was so simple when it was so complex. The world had moved on now & we know so much more. A great designer had to create us as complex as we are & every living thing on our planet & that great designer I believe to be God.

@@Ohnoitsruthio By definition, God is uncreated. He is outside time. Science suggests that the universe has not always existed - there was a point at which it began. So what, or who, began it? Time and space did not exist before the universe existed. Therefore whatever caused the universe to begin had to be timeless. This is the Kalam cosmological argument: - Whatever begins to exist has a cause. - The universe began to exist. - Therefore the universe has a cause. (For anyone interested, there are two short videos with more information about this on the drcraigvideos channel. Just search for The Kalam Cosmological Argument Part 1 and Part 2.)

You don't know how to debate and accept anything with opposing views. Your mind has been made up by what you have been taught rather than you looking into it for yourself. Intelligent people question everything and are open to other viewpoints.
