Dr. Jordan B. Peterson is asked whether there is a link between the rise of behavioral disorders in children and the current changes in society, or if we are just more aware. He expands on the question, detailing the attitude we have allowed children to carry into adulthood, the lack of proper identity play through development, the drugs and mutilation wreaking havoc on our youngest generation, and the dismal worldview that demoralizes and stagnates societal progress.

When my daughter was three, she wanted to grow up to be a mermaid. We said Ok, but we did not have her legs surgically modified and keep her in fish tank. She's 33 now, married with kids and works in marketing. I think she's glad we kept her a human till she was old enough to make an informed mature decision.

When I was 8, I was diagnosed with Autism back in the 90s. While all the kids were playing sports at Recess and Lunch, I stayed in the library, reading novels, playing computer games or trading through comic books. This was perfectly normal behaviour, but because I wasn't doing what all the other were doing, I was branded as different and treated as if I was a problem. That was the identity that was given to me. I was apparently stupid, and lazy, and irresponsible, because that's how all people with Autism were supposedly. I was so confused. It wasn't until my early 20s when I realised I had no real idea about who I was - and partly with Peterson's help, transformed my life. I found jobs, completed two Degrees, bought a house and even got engaged last week (yay). And with some therapy, I realised my parents and teachers had really no honest to God idea about what they were doing. Any deviation from the norm, and they'd just start randomly throwing labels around. And like I said, this was the 90s. Life is seriously a mediation between your wants and the environment. And now I see countless friends and family members my age labelling themselves with virtually every acronym under the sun - ASD, ADHD, ADD, PTSD, OCD. It's trendy now, it's the new thing. We have a generation of Millennials, and some Gen Z, absolutely clueless about how to operate in wide society because they were never permitted to introspect in their youth. Parents wanted children smart enough to get by, but dumb enough to do what they said. That's not a child. That's a pet.

And it's how school has largely been set up as. It's tragic thinking back what I could have used growing up, but in some aspects that's likely the parent cycle. Passing on what you consider important to pass on within the limits of how you've grown at that point and how *you* were taught.

Dear stranger, many thanks for the comment here. Was looking for something like this. Congrats to you and your fiancee. My husband was almost diagnosed with autism, in the 90s, too. I was labelled problematic and too outspoken? Now our child gets very very excited over things, there are already people telling us we should monitor him for autism. I get that it is possible, but this comment gave me a lot of hope for my parenting. We don't have to perpetuate the mistakes.

As a woman who was deceived by the career mantra, I approve this message. Just gave birth last week at 41 years of age. The last thing I want to do is return to work. I want to stay at home and have more kids. Trying to see how to make that happen by cutting down expenses and encouraging my hubby to pursue his career goals . I’ve loved Peterson’s message for a long time but now it’s actually a necessary voice in my home.

I'm a substitute teacher. I see a lot. I dearly appreciate children at all ages. What I see is a need for importance or difference for their autonomy and significance. Weekly, with older children in general, they want to pull me in to respond to their Identify specifications. Today, a young man said, "Hey ,I'm gay." I said , "ok, good for you." Then trying to gaslight me, he says, "Don't you want to know my other pronouns?" I said, "No, just your name because I won't be talking about you, so what name do you prefer?" He said, "Oh, you don't care about my pronouns? I'm putting you on Twitter. I said, sounds like you are very important. He said , "I am...over 1,000 followers. Good for you. I said , "You are who you think you are. Why should I care? Are you more upset about that I don't care and I believe you can live the life you want and Identify the way you want and that's good for you, but I don't have to care either way how you live your life? Isn't that what you want? Why should I care? So what name would you like me to use? Kinda sad

Im not a mom yet but I am a housewife, and although I hated my office job, I also hated being at home. And then my husband atarted his own business and started taking me to work with him, and I loved it! And I realized that working in the office and staying home (as i had experienced those things) was the same - being alone all day in a poorly lit space, doing tasks that don't mean a lot, loosing your mind. Going to work with my husband has helped us get closer because we see each other working and help each other accomplish things, and we're together and he expresses his appreciation that I'm there. I still do house stuff and that's fine, but im so glad I get to look forward to being with him and being helpful to him on days when we work together. It gives me a lot of purpose and joy to be outside, working with my hands, being next to him, and knowing that he appreciates what i do. And i can appreciate him more, having awareness of his workload that I previously didn't have.

The point that Dr. Peterson makes about poverty keeping people from having a broader perspective is profound. I've witnessed an effect of it: visiting Mexico years ago, I was dismayed by the litter - plastic bags were drifting everywhere. My own home state of WA had for years the slogan "Keep Washington Green" and it was rare to see roadside litter. But that was then and this is now: as more people, whether they are migrants or not, fall into despair, the litter level has also increased. It's probably a barometer of not just disregard, but desperation.

You guys are being so insensitive to his wife. It was driven into women's heads that they are just as capable of doing jobs like men. She probably wanted to find a purpose for herself in her job and when she had kids, she probably did everything she could for her kids and having a job most likely helped. When she wanted to quit her job, it was completely acceptable and he did the right thing and let her stay home. I believe women have the choice to choose if they want to work or not, and should be able to change it if they feel like it's the best for them. These are my notes for the children identity part. Hope it helps. Much of what we do to children is confuse them in relation to identity. If identity is about temporary feeling, when meaning are not precise, subjectively define, it's equivalent to misbehaving 2 years old. All social relations are negotiation of identity. A 2 year old do not have the maturity to orient themselves, they are impulsive, and unable to engage in social play. A social relationship is an invitation to play, if it's a tyranical approach, then it's antisocial and doesn't lead to development of social skills. Children can engage in pretend play(role playing), to play, to experiment a chosen identity over a span of time with playmates. A game is played with assigned rules that is negotiated.

The first fifteen years of a child's life is the most important, you can't get those years back. if you want any chance of your child or children being a productive citizen you have to put the time in. if you know your child is in school for hours a day you need to know the curriculum that is being taught. What ideologies are being put in their mind? wherever they go you need to know what they are learning and who they are learning it from.

This is why Sunday School is beneficial! As a child, I believed that I couldn’t stand going. yet, as an adult now. I know I could be struggling with this difficult life far worse, and have less understanding about what to expect and how to handle the unknown factors in this world.

Its the job of adults to offer roles to children - its called role models - whether as parents, teachers or random adults who interact - people will try different roles and eventually take one with minor modifications based on their uniqueness - but it still fits a role - positive to society - or unfortunately negative to society. Your new role as an adult can offer a new model for other newer children.

I remember when I was about 7, and Revenge of the Sith had just come out. My best mate and I would spend entire weekends having massive Star Wars battles where I would be Obi Wan and he was Anakin, culminating the giant, backyard forest based imaginary war by a day long stick based lightsaber duel between us, with lemonade breaks throughout. God I miss being a kid. Imagine how shit it must be nowadays.

Pescador de Hombres, I so wanted to hear you today! Gracias!!!! Today is "Emancipation Day", and there is no school for some here in Puerto Rico. As I have mentioned before, I was a teacher. My child is considered to be of special education. I love him so much. I often feel sad though, as if I were forced to live in the Matrix. I can see teachers, people-both men and women- happily eating filet mignon, and making deals, with Agents. My boy will be a great man one day. The best gift I can give him, is to STAY AWAKE. Society, seems to be in trouble, but it always is. It's different now, but it's still trouble. The real problem, in my opinion, of course, is the NARCISSISM of teachers and school administrators. It's ALL ABOUT social media. I am, DISGUSTED, BECAUSE I am awake. Thank you so much. I feel like Ariel, shaking her head to Sebastian..."If we could get that Witch...to give you back your voice...you can go home, with all the normal fish... and just be...and just be..."

Identity has many component, some are objective, some are interpersonal, some are subjective, others are probably missing - since I am not an psychologist. - "I am a doctor" (objective) - "I get a long well with others" (interpersonal) - "I am someone who loves to eat raw butter" (subjective) These components typically are directly or indirectly influence by personality, genetics, skills, profession, social context, etc. Over some of these we have arbitrary control (subjective), but most of them are how we conduct ourselves / are seen by other / or what role we play. So most of these components of identity are not just purely subjective, but emerge from the relations to others. Ideally your self assigned identities are the same as what others would ascribe to you and also what objectively fits. But if any of these 3 (or more?) identities deviate from the others, there is some form of a crisis.

I did not realize mine own identity until my twenties. I realized that, "I am I. I am not just my father's son, but he is also my father." I am not just an adjunct to this or that person, they also have a responsibility of relationship to me. That made me realize that I was not an expendable buffer, useful only for dying at the right moment to save someone in the family that was actually valuable. I, too, was (and am) valuable! Some people won't understand, but for me, this was discovering fire!!!

A lot of this honestly feels like basic common sense. And I do still feel like most people still think with common sense similarly, in their own unique ways. But it is truly without a doubt that social media amplifies the voices of those that are tainted with these new 'ideas', if you can call them that. Point is, it feels a little sad as well about hearing simple virtues being heard again and most people, again, don't remember being taught as a child. If those child's were blessed enough for a basic decent education

Over spoilt kids become anti social, some parents are extra indulgent because they do not love enough, they can't love because they have a big limitation not because they won't. Caring for such kids could profit from agency support. A right self image at an early image is what expresses itself through adolscence and youth.

Key word here is think, the process of thought is not accurate to any degree. Its important to determine the difference between thinking and feeling. And the different levels of feeling. The English language is not the best descriptor of these internal processes. We often muddle thinking and feeling, but first is feeling, then comes thought as a descriptor of feeling. Dysphoria comes from a feeling of discomfort within one's skin, which requires an embracing of oneself and their being in its expressions physically and mentally. To rely on others for your sense of identity is also a huge fault, when we think we are what we're told we are, we feel that our own sense of being is invalid, and we must push it away. There's a middle ground, i think this idea could be more fleshed out in its nuances.

In the movie the last book was published in like 2006 because there were no more trees to make paper. Information is hard to come by... exactly like the 2022 we all experienced in reality... or something.
