When I caught up (episode 35 maybe?) I was afraid of long waiting times between episodes, but you've been absolutely spoiling us. I can barely keep up. I love this series so much. Be sure to have Kim with you when you pass the Logic check on Evrart's envelope!

There might still be enough waking time to unlock the thought from Smoker on the Balcony if you talk to him soon...but maybe not. it's a relatively quick conversation if you can pass the check. Also, I'm glad you're going all in with helping the Cryptozoologist couple. Lena is very sweet.

I wonder how therapists cope with such deep, emotional moments. If you have too much empathy then a discussion with a client, feeling their pain can break your heart, probably. And if you have many meetings like that daily... can it mess you up mentally? Are there any coping techniques for therapists?
@eurobrady
@eurobrady 6 дней назад
When I was a new therapist, this was the hardest thing to learn. I would take my work home with me and think about my clients all the time, and it's just hard not to get really emotionally invested. I guess you just learn to compartmentalize things better, letting yourself be open to your own emotions when it's needed to connect in a session, and then also composing yourself again for the next one. And like everything, it gets easier with practice. Plus you talk it out with other therapists, co-workers, or supervisors, which helps to process your own strong reactions without it spilling over into the client's work. And of course, therapists have therapists too! All of it helps to lighten the load, but compassion fatigue is quite real and often burns people out. Part of why I like making content here is this is a place to still talk about the things I love in psychology but in a less serious space, and without the stakes of real people's lives. It fills my cup in a similar way but is also just fun!

@@eurobrady So analyzing one of the best-written games is a sort of a steam-release mechanism, if we look at it that way. It makes sense. I hope you'll get through it to the end, epecially after the church revelations.

I believe this game IS a psychotherapy tool. Made by partly broken people keeping their shit together for partly broken people to help them keep their shit together. We all are at least partly broken, aren't we? The story about the writers and artists of Disco Elysium, Kurvitz etc, is just like it was pulled from the game itself, almost uncanny (or just self-referential?), but I guess you have to be there, at least partially, in order to be able to understand it and write it.

@@SpaceWolf011 As somebody who lives near Estonia where Kurvitz (and some others who used to be part of ZA/UM before they were fucked over by the investor) are from and also struggled with some addictions in the past, I get this game very much. I hope they'll manage to make a sequel in the future.

This is one of my favorite episodes so far! I think it's fascinating that therapy can be so much of a mode of approaching trauma and learning / healing, but it's also significant in how it can contextualize and make meaning of our lives. Thinking of it that way, Disco Elysium really is a fantastic game to play with a therapeutic mindset, given Harry's journey to find meaning, significance, and healing in his own life. There's also this great irony there, that the case becomes this much more significant experience for Harry, because we get so many hints at this having been an issue throughout his life, too. What makes him such a good detective is that he connects deeply with people and his work. But at the same time, that proves torturous for him and creates a massive rift between him and anyone he builds relationships with. I've experienced a bit of this, too--where when I excel at my work, I tend to be taken advantage of and experience even more stresses because I am good at the work. And it feels like the only way to navigate that is to draw very hard lines about when we stop working for both ourselves and our employers. But it's clearly really hard for Harry because how he works is so synonymous with how he lives. I don't know if there's any perfect solutions for delineation there.

Yeah, the best part is when he finally solves the investigation that kim's been pestering him about, perhaps it was the insilndian phasmid who murdered the guy? Took up a sniper rifle and shot at him? No one would suspect such a thing...

@@Silent_DepthsYeah I don’t get why there are people that are so against volition, given that it is the only thing keeping Harry alive right now, it is his will to keep going against all odds, it is the executive power of Harry, and thus it could be argued that it is his most *him* skill.
@Silent_Depths
@Silent_Depths 5 дней назад
@@Medivh9 I agree although I haven't paid attention to what people think of any one aspect of Harry's psyche, but to me it was evident what Volition represents. Maybe it would help people to fully appreciate it if they read The World as Will and Representation by Schopenhauer and after that Process and Reality by Whitehead. :P All of them (skills for the lack of a better word) have powerful moments in DE, but for the record the closest to my heart and mind are Half-Light and Conceptualization.

There's another line you get with Lena if your skills are high enough, along with Inland Empire talking about the phasmid being a "benevolant god". "And she could walk anywhere she wants, without anyone helping her..." Also, as she's about to drive off, a few other skills chime in. "A lie?" If your perception is high enough you hear her mutter "a fool's hope" under her breath.

Rumor has that Lena was originally going to be a 3rd recruitable character, but this version of the Unity engine is tempermental when it comes to wheeled objects (hence why you never see her wheelchair in the act of moving and all the vehicles in the jam including Kim's patrol car never so much as budge). Plus there's the imagery of a frail elderly woman hauling ass to keep up with Harry and Kim running around, going up and down stairwells, etc.
