Ever watch that episode of star-trek where the ship lost its crew. Its kinda like that. To compare us to robots is innacurate. A better comparison would be a factory or corporation. We are millions of different parts that are there to complete only one function. They are there to do their job and do it well. and the Corporate Board keeps messing up the company.. From the mitochodria to the e-coli. We are one, we are many, we are legion, you didn't even have a chance to be assimilated. You started that way.
@jonnenne

I would rather say that we are robots that smartly use smaller robots since they offer some functions for cheap. Like using a subcontractor for parts of a project.

I'm still fairly sure that Crohn's Disease (which I suffer from) and other immunological disorders are partially attributed to better hygiene in developed nations. It's strange that these places have higher levels of immunological disorders despite having generally better healthcare. I also have a feeling (though this is more of a passing thought of mine) that people who eat more pickled and fermented food have less chance of developing immunological disorders. It only occurred to me when I noticed that countries like Japan and South Korea, which are still developed, have had lower levels of immunological problems in the past, yet the growth of a western diet in recent decades and a subsequent shift away from more traditional foods (such as the aforementioned pickled and fermented goodies) seems to be correlated with an increase in immunological disorders. I know, I know. Correlation is not causation. Although it could simply be the western diet itself that's the problem...
@VicodinElmo
@VicodinElmo 7 лет назад
Also, I'm not seriously suggesting that any of this has any scientific merit so please don't take it as such. It's just one of those passing curiosities of mine.

It's not at all odd. They teach you at a young age that healthcare will keep you healthy but what it does is inhibit your immune system. You trade the capacity to self heal with the pharmacutical/medical industry that profits off of your illness. It's not so much the fault of doctors/nurses as it is the mindset of capitalistic profiteering that drives treatments over cures, over isolating genetic disorders and reconstructing dna strands, etc. Not to mention I have yet to see one study on the effects of sanitizers, antibacterials, anti anything on your microbiome both short or long term...
@aia1190

also eating meat and dairy from animals that were injected with antibiotics, the antibiotics make their way into us as well causing more disturbances in our gut microbiome modern meat and dairy is not as healthy as it used to be before introducing cows to corn feed, and pasteurisation. The modern diet also causes crowded teeth and jaw development issues in the west

I suspect that many illnesses potentially can be treated by adjusting our microbiome. Soon we might go to the doctor, not to treat an infection, but to be treated WITH an infection.
@DemRat

@Master_Therion

RasRas342 Not really. That's a completely different thing. The goal of a vaccine is not to introduce a viable colony of bacteria.

Vaccines prime the immune system to PREVENT a microbe from growing inside the body. Microbiome therapy will be used to ENCOURAGE a microbe to grow. Not all microbes cause disease, some are actually helpful.
@iout
@iout 7 лет назад
so, are you proposing to engineer bacteria that fight off specific viruses, then introduce them into our systems so that they can grow and effectively become our immune system? And if so, then there come a few problems, such as making sure the bacteria can't mutate to become harmful, plus they'd have to be introduced when we're still babies, otherwise our immune system might reject the bacteria, and depending, it might give you fevers and stuff anyways as it attempts to take down the new bacteria.

I was born in my own home, I was a few hours early and got out. However, I never had any allergies, and in the past few months the last time I got sick was because of a food poisoning, and I was ok in half a day. So maybe because I was naturally born in a relatively dirtier environment, I got a better immune system today. However, I had my fare share of colds and flus as a kid.

This video has conveniently neglected to mention that in reality, our microbial symbiotes far outnumber our own cells. Each individual human being is an ecosystem, not just one individual creature.
@besmart
@besmart 7 лет назад
+4G12 That's actually not the case according to more recent estimates. New studies in 2016 put our microbial population about 1:1 equal to our own cells
@4G12
@4G12 7 лет назад
I see, though in reality microbial population numbers may vary quite a lot depending on exact environmental situations. I also wonder how their estimates are made as well. I would much appreciate if you could provide some links to references too. ;-) Either way, that does not change the fact that we are still ecosystems in on ourselves as "individual humans" though. We all transfer microbes between ourselves and our environment all the time unless we somehow got locked up in some hypothetical sterile environment and somehow got all microbes purged from our bodies, something I would not personally recommend. The hygiene hypothesis actually reminds me of the parasite hypothesis too, which says something along the lines of we evolved to tolerate parasitism to a degree and as long as parasites don't run amok, they may benefit us by reducing the chance of autoimmune diseases. Personally, I find the notion of an organism considered in a vacuum to be an inherently invalid concept. And organism cannot possibly exist without the environment it emerged from in the first place. An organism only makes sense within the context of its environment. Thanks, I sincerely appreciate your efforts to educate and inspire scientific curiosity.

I always wonder when you see moms constantly scolding babies, and saying "dont touch that" "thats dirty" "dont put that in your mouth" "now we have to wash your hands all over again" etc.. Are they unknowingly hurting their babies? Should we be letting kids crawl on public floors and put strange items in their mouth? I know i always rolled in mud, played with snakes, sucked on everything i could, and just generally exposed myself to many germs as a kid. I don't have any allergies to anything, but i do have a horrible immune system. I wonder if early exposure made things better or worse? Is there any benefit to continuing to expose oneself to germs as an adult, or is there only benefit for babies? Just curious as to how clean is too clean when it comes to cleaning and just generally being alive.

When I was a child on countryside, there was this city kid whose parents were sterilizing everything for him to protect him from microbes. They came to visit and the first thing that the kid did was to eat chicken poop. Oh the horrified faces of his parents, while we were all laughing... But even at that time we knew that the joke was on the parents, not on the kid.

It is always nice to see one upvoted comment like this to verify the channel's respond possibility.
