If you have an anterior open bite and are 16 years old. One that is only a mild/moderate open bite, are you limited with time that you have it to get fixed ..? As in , when you turn 18 , could it be too late to fix this without the use of jam - surgery.
@@yessirski9801 It depends what you mean by jaw surgery. There are various surgical procedures that can close certain types of open bites in adults. "Major jaw surgery" would include moving the bones of the jaw and "minor jaw surgery" would involve the use of mini-implants or temporary anchorage devices. There are also some non-surgical procedures that can have some success in closing anterior open bites (Invisalign relative intrusion-extrusion, Kim mechanics, bite opening curves with anterior box elastics, specific bracket positioning to name a few). The list of options is quite long and specific advice can only be given on this after a full clinical assessment.
@@bracebook1965 Invisalign..? I thought that braces are most effective for solving complex issues such as AOB's. Aren't Invisalign less effective, and only used for aesthetic prusposed only. ? Or is it the Invisalign actually over-performs braces/elastics combo in some cases?
@@yessirski9801 Hi Molly, there is no single best appliance for any malocclusion, they are all just tools in the armamentarium of the Orthodontist. This is why Orthodontists exist, they should understand all possible movements, appliances, techniques and assimilate that knowledge into the best plan for you. Invisalign has some success with open bite treatments but in very specific cases, which is often determined by full clinical examination, OPG and Lateral Cephalometric radiograph and tracing.

Can braces. move your jaw as an adult. ? Why is it that they suggest an early intervention for open bites, so they can use growth modification..? Does this mean its harder to fix in 16 year olds?
@@yessirski9801 Movements are generally easier in children because growth helps. The only way to get the answer is to see the Orthodontist to discuss I'm afraid because growth is variable in individuals and not just based on age.
@@bracebook1965 Cheers for the reply! I do appreciate that its much easier to do with adults. So if your fully grown and you like 30 lets say. Does that mean open bite cannot be corrected as they wont be room for movement.? Or has it got nothing to do with this. Cheers again @bracebook
@@yessirski9801 Open bites can be corrected in adults and I have detailed in a previous answer to you ways in which that can be achieved. It is more difficult however due the absence of growth, slower bone metabolism and lowered compliance of adults in wearing certain types of appliances.
