The posture is overlooked by most players...
The posture has a big influence on your range of motion in the swing and also how your body moves. Knowing HOW to set up correctly will give you the best chance at swinging the golf club more efficiently!
In this video I go over some misconceptions about posture and the most common mistake I see as well as my favorite drill to help you feel the correct posture every time!

Hey JKM, this is some of the best golf content on youtube! Seriously, these are the ONLY videos that have given me a systematic understanding and pathway to improving. Keep it up! What sucks about youtube is that if you're not click baiting or keeping viewers "entertained", you won't get the viewership. But to me you're providing massive value to my game. PLEASE keep it up. I would love to see chipping, putting, and course management videos on your channel. Also I plan to take online lessons with you sometime in the future. Keep going!

Just watched your video but previous week I worked out my incorrect posture was causing slicing and pushes. I did a particular posture move that allowed my hips to much easily rotate to 45 deg and get into my ideal power position including hands. I had been struggling. With this change, i was able to hit most fairways off tee and shots onto green instead of to the right, won my social club comp game by 6 strokes. So good posture is very important as for me difference in good consistent golf and poor golf.

I love this tutorial! I’ve been bringing this up in a few uk golf channels and never get a 2nd thought but in my mind correct set-up and posture is fundamental and can eliminate poor takeaways, swing paths, club delivery, ball striking and, to some extent, club fitting! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Excellent content and your delivery is spot on too!

Excellent video, Sir. I have been playing for 35 years and it's eye-opening to realise my posture is almost exactly like your 'most common' bad set-up - too much knee bend, leading to lack of hip bend leading to too much upright at impact limiting my ability to rotate. Definitely gonna work on your drill. Cheers!! (new subscriber now)

Jonathan thanks for the suggestion I will work on applying those recommendations and see if my swing swing can benefit from the change. I’ve been working on my posture for many years now and have a fairly comfortable setup. My primary goal is stability even when the body is transferring weight during the course of the swing. The unmentioned factor is the club head. Because of centrifugal force, the club pulls the body away from its established center. This causes weight to end up on the toes or the ball of my feet. By then the footwork sequence will be off and affects the swing plane, and ultimately the shot result. The finished position of my right foot would be off or a curled position instead of the toe on the ground and the heel perfectly above it. The best setup for my swing is also understanding proper footwork. If my posture is off, I end up on the ball of my foot and its always a miss right. If I use to much heel to counter the opposite force generated by the club head, the the miss is left. The perfect setup for me is the weight evenly distributed between ball and heel and at the finished position, on the left heel edge.

🤯 I've struggled with balance during my backswing since I've started playing golf again. I squat lower to "help" with my balance and put most the weight on my heels. It was a minor "fix" but my weight would tilt forward a lot. I tried the wall drill and I can feel the weight in balls of my feet, not my toes or my heels. I'll keep practicing this before I hit the range. Thanks, my posture is already improving

@@JKMGolf Watched two of your vids on that & I noted that my driving improved considerably last year with S&T. I used to have an exaggerated forward press meaning my head was too far forward. I think I overinterpreted the weight forward idea with my driver. With driver I have a more closed stance than with my irons where it is a slightly closed stance. The idea of shifting your hips forward faster with the driver resonated. I think I was guilty of shifting too fast with my irons too & rushing the downswing trying to kill the ball. So I tried to slow down the tempo somewhat last year. Now I just say "smooth" in my mind, do a couple of waggles & then swing.

Hi Jonathan. Really like your channel and approach. Can you help me ? I have occasionally hit that sweet shot off iron (or driver/wood) face that feels effortless and launches with nice arc and (unexpected!) power. But I often set up with face at sweet spot, then end up hitting off heel. I now realize at impact I extend, and so started backing up an extra inch which is crazy but sometimes has really paid off. How do YOU determine how far to stand back because simply facing ball even with correct posture doesn’t mimic my extension of club face at impact. THANK YOU.

I found that if I do this setup, my lower back left muscles are strained after a session - or do you reckon that it's something else? Posture is the only thing that makes sense as to why this happens
@joshnewman4270
@joshnewman4270 Год назад
So can arching your lower back and tightening those lower back muscles cause you to top or shank the ball? I've crossed everything off the list and this is the only thing I can think of that is causing it. I feel like I can stay down on the ball better when I round my shoulders a bit and let my back muscles relax.

Love the wall set up drill , set up changes feel so awkward when the incorrect set up has been ingrained for 40yrs , long time golfer low handicap player. My question is when I set up this way I have more hip tilt at address , I feel more “grounded” in my feet but also because my shoulders are closer to the ball I have less protraction in my shoulders, my arms and body feel more connected which I would think is a good thing but it seems like in this video you are not advocating that?
@JKMGolf
@JKMGolf Год назад
You don’t want to pinch the shoulder blades together or have a arched lower back since this will limit mobility. Instead you ant a flat lower back and a slightly rounded upper back

I can't stop dipping my head towards the ball on my backswing. I know I need to get my weight onto the balls of my feet but i feel like I'm going to fall forward. An inch to an inch and a half away from the wall? I hope I can do that. I'm getting frustrated with the head dip.

Like some of this video but not the bits about bum in line with heels. Go look at Rory. His bum is a good 4-5 inches behind his heels at address and he does also have a little bit of knee and ankle bend at address. He’s not sat upright though, he pairs this with a good amount of hip bend to find a good, balanced posture.
@JKMGolf
@JKMGolf Год назад
I never said the bum is directly in line with the heels…I said that it should not be too far beyond your heels and that these players will have more weight in the heels so they would need to feel as if their hips are tucked more under them to help flatten their lower back and bring the weight more in the Center of the feet
@MPerski
@MPerski 3 года назад
Everyone says I bend over too much (I’m 6’1). I don’t FEEL it, but since so many mention it, I feel I need to setup a bit more upright. I notice Keegan Bradley gets real low (so bent over). I feel like my arms hang straight down and I feel my weight is on the balls of my feet (not on heels, not on toes), but I can do that bent over more. Should I focus on how far my hands are from my thighs? (that is, should my hands be close to my thighs at setup?) What do you think?
@JKMGolf
@JKMGolf 3 года назад
It’s hard to say without seeing your set up but from the sound of it you need to stand closer to the ball with your hips tucked more under you. Watch my “posture affects everything” video and I show a great drill you could try.

If you were a player that had too much weight on the heels then it may feel like you have a lot more weight on the balls of the feet. It also depends on how much you are bending your knees and how much you bend from the waist. The feel may be slightly different for people depending on your original set up position.
