How do you land a jet if not able to see the landing? Couple years back our flight. Put was going around the whole airport. After maybe 15 minutes we were able to takeoff. At our destination we couldnt land because we were in a cloud. Finally we landed, ran down to the street area and it was raining heavily. Do you land only visually?

Another nice one sir. I don't know why anyone would come on your channel and then make negative comments about money. I'm sure most people who watch are just like me, flying geeks who just love airplanes. I consider myself lucky to have logged 300 hrs in a 172. Just the fact that you take the time to share your obvious love of flying with us is something I truly appreciate. Most of us will never fly a jet, but we get to ride along with someone who does and is willing to share, for that I thank you sir.

Thank you Greg for the reply. I recently saw the video made by an experienced pilot who spent some years looking into the death of JFK Jr and all on board his small plane headed for Martha Vineyard but ended up in the Atlantic Ocean. The fuel in the wings of his small plane did add to his confusion of circumstances during his night flight and gradually headed him eastward into the Atlantic Ocean where his plane subsequently went nose-first into the Atlantic at over 200 NMPH. I really can see how helpful it is to have an experienced pilot in the right seat. It always amazes me hour you can memorize all the info from the various controllers and pretty much never make a mistake along with all the other things you have to do in speak, altitude, and navigation. You truly are an expert pilot so mindful of the smallest detail even how well you speak on the radio from a professional level. Thanx Greg looking forward to our next flight

do you start your cameras and leave them running the whole time or do you start and stop some of them? The reason I ask is I have that same GoPro 5 session and the battery lifeisn't as great as some of the newer ones so I start and stop at frequently. This of course complicates editing.

If it is less than an hour, I'll let them run. Otherwise, I'll turn them off, swap batteries and turn back on during descent.

I use gopro hero 4's and the battery life sucks (maybe they are just old), So my workaround is to just use the ANKER external battery pack that @Aviation 101 recommended on his pilot bag video. There are many really thin mini usb cables available that work great.

Hi Greg, I'm now 80 and loving these videos. About 50 years ago I owned a Comanche and flew out of Schaumburg. Flew to Weir-Cook several times. Got my instrument rating and flew 12 hours more and sold the plane. I realized I did not have the time or money to stick with it. Wish now I had.... I have a question. During the video you explained your ground speed in knots. I converted to MPH and it was 494.5. The GoPro showed 472. More curious than anything, why the difference? Wondering if I missed something. Thanks....
@FelipeBR777
@FelipeBR777 4 года назад
Hello Mr. Dennis! How are you, sir? That’s a GoPro error. At minute 14:54 you can see that the GoPro is already showing 472MPH, and right after, at minute 14:57, you can see on the multi function display a ground speed of 347 knots, or 399MPH. I don’t know if you already found an answer for your question; if not, I hope I have cleared it out for you. Kind regards from Brazil!

Hi Greg, I am unable to fly anymore so this is how I still enjoy it.... always enjoy the narration of your cockpit activities and the demo of your instrumentation.... They're all pretty much the same but a little different. I also follow along with the charts which is what we were relegated to back in the day. I never got to fly with anything more than a heading hold and ofcourse we had no glass screens. Thank you for sharing the cockpit with me ....it looks like more fun and less stress.... unless something malfunctions. ..... Regards from down here in Wilmington, NC.

It's pretty easy to avoid visiting bathrooms for quite a long time -- just dehydrate your body with only sipping tiny and seldom for 2-3 hours prior departure, and you are almost guaranteed 6-8 hours of quiet time :)

Greg, thank you for the videos. I enjoy your channel and haven't commented in a couple of years but now I feel it's time to remind your viewers to please use standard phraseology over the radio. As a commercial/instrument/aircraft owner with 3,000 hours based nearby at KUMP I've certainly had my share of mistakes when communicating. I don't want to be "that guy" who points out the least little thing like "lookin' for runway 3" or whatever (thanks for not editing out your mistakes as a public service). What I do recommend is consistent, concise, disciplined phraseology whenever keying the mic as the rule, not the exception. Controllers are required to use standard phrases and I so appreciate how much easier it makes my job in the cockpit. I feel we owe them the same courtesy and professionalism. It's easy for anyone to develop bad habits over time, even former military and corporate jet drivers, so here's the skinny: 1. Headings: say "heading one-two-zero" not "one-twenty." The key word is "heading" followed by three single digits. That way everyone knows you're communicating an assigned heading and not an altitude, frequency or squawk. They do it. We should do it. 2. Altitudes: say "niner-thousand six hundred climbing flight level two-three-zero" not nine-point-six up to two-three-zero." The keyword "point" is reserved for frequencies and is never used when reporting altitudes. Other phrases like "climb and maintain" or "descend and maintain" are preferred over phrases like "up to" or "down to" (the "to" is confused with "two" as well). Always give altitude when checking in with a new controller so they don't have to ask you to confirm your altitude, especially over a busy airspace like Chicago. Again, they do it, we should do it. 3. Frequencies: say "one-two-four point two-five" not "twenty-four twenty-five." The keyword "point" is always used to report frequencies in the USA. Many other countries use the keyword "decimal" instead. 4. Transponder: say "squawk two-three-four-five" not "twenty-three forty-five in the box" or whatever. The keyword is "squawk" always followed by four single digits. And every time I hear someone say "with you" when checking in (and you don't do this) I want to cringe. Just give them your full callsign and altitude along with any other concise information needed for the next phase of flight. I get the idea behind reading back clearances this way. It seems airline pilot cool or maybe you're just wanting to say things in a different way so they know you understand and are experienced. You didn't ask for my advice but your video is titled, "Your Questions Answered." So here's my question for you, Greg: "What kind of example would you like to set for the many pilots watching your videos?" I'm sure you won't want to fly with me after my remarks but just know I'd love to. Thanks so much and happy flying!

I just happened onto your channel today and watched your flight. I have to say I am completely hooked. I always have had the utmost respect for pilots and thank you for your service. I remember flying with my uncle many years ago, this brought back some fond memories. Great video, I felt like I was in the jet sitting next to you.

Thank you for you detailed explanations. I really appreciate that as a non-pilot retired aviation want-to-be. Having been exposed to private aviation in my teens by a friend whose family was heavy into aviation, and he actually received his pilot's license and driver's license at the approximately the same time, gave me a dream of a career in aviation, but it never materialized. My career was in the communications field in the military and a large communications giant. He and another friend of mine are retired ATP pilots from the commercial airlines and international air freight operations. Again, thank you for your very well done videos!

Also I drive by your hanger all the time for my work. It’s awesome to be able to see the planes out there! One of these days I’ll be in a private jet👍! It’s awesome watching your vids and seeing how humble you are. We all know some people that have your success are not the friendliest people lol! Keep up the great work and hopefully you have as much success (family and financially) as you hope for!

One of your newer subscribers Greg. Pretty easy to get hooked on these! We had F16s up here in Fort Wayne at the National Guard a while back. Now we have Warthogs flying overhead all the time! Love the sound they make as they pass by. I have lots of questions, but the most important one that I haven't seen asked or answered yet: What does Premier1Rider think of the beard?! Thanks for the excellent videos, your example for all of us watching, and your service, sir.

Greg. From a camera angle perspective, this video is probably the best video you have made. The cameras in front of the PFD/MFD and center console are greatly appreciated. If one of those 360 cameras was placed in front of the PFD/MFD, could the viewers then scan the instrument panel at their discretion? Good on you! Patrick from Albuquerque

Hey P1D! (we have spoken before on Instagram. I am located in Miami). I reached out and wanted to do a photoshoot for you (but then COVID-19 hit) so, everything has changed since then. Anyway, glad to see you flying again! I have learned so much as well about being a pilot from your videos. I have been trying to practice some things in the simulator. Trying now to learn how to calculate TOD, and just in general how to hit an IAF waypoint at a specific alt. I googled this, and found some say to take the current FL (say FL410) and then subtract the target ALT (say 13,700) then take the difference (13,290) and divide by 3 (so, it would be 132/3) and would give me 45-miles to be on target. Then, for the rate I saw about taking the current ground speed and x5 (say, 320kts) then would be -1600fpm. or.. to account for a reduction of speed while descending.. IAS + ALT difference / 2. So, say the IAS is 220 then it would be 220 plus the 13,290 (difference), then x5 (33,775) which would give me apx. a decent rate of 3,300fpm. Basically I am trying to learn the proper way to come in on some RNAV approaches for landing. I love ILS because it is easy, lol. But, without ILS (or VNAV) this becomes a lot of work and very interesting! Any thoughts?

Bill Lear being the "guy" he was stated that having a bathroom meant it was taking you too long to get to where you needed to be. People also criticized his first Learjet--Model 23 because you couldn't stand up in it. He simply stated you can't stand up in a Cadillac either. Thanks for another great video Greg. Pretty quite at my home about seven miles NW from ICT with the overhead traffic landing on R14 and takeoffs on R1L turning left. And...had to break down and take a look yesterday and yes....Oshkosh is canceled as it should be. Damn!!
