Sketchbook Tour: Illustrators and other artists are showing off their beautiful sketchbooks on social media - but is that whole vibe more aspirational than realistic for artists? And is it the best strategy to spend so much time on your masterpiece sketchbook? In this video I argue that ugly sketchbooks are OK, and that it might make sense to save some of your inspiration for the final piece! And, I show you some of my simple sketches and the final art and animation they lead to.
EDLUNDART is a boutique design and animation studio in New York City, and now also a RU-vid channel for artists and creative people featuring me, a random guy in a hat but also variously a graphic designer, animator, artist, Art Director and Creative Director entertainingly talking my way through videos on art, design, animation, culture, creativity, and business from the perspective of an artist entrepreneur and small business owner.

I think a lot of the problem also stems from people displaying their “accepted art school sketchbooks” where they create a whole sketchbook just to show off their best work. I think this puts into people’s minds that a sketchbook has to be perfect and beautiful, which it really doesn’t have to be.

Yeah, no. Art school sketchbooks are a fraction of all sketchbooks displayed online and aren't even the ones who started this trend. The major problem is the idea that you should only show "good" parts of your life online, especially on social media.

Omg YES. a few years ago I was so scared to draw in my sketchbook, because I was afraid it wouldn’t look as neat and pretty as those on Instagram. Awesome video btw! 💚👌🏻

I think what you’re saying is so real - I think a lot of people are feeling that “fear,” which is a real shame, since sharing art on social media ought to be inspiring more than anything. I’m sure most people posting their beautiful sketchbooks mean well, but it can be a bit intimidating, especially for anyone still searching for their voice! Thank you very much for watching and chiming in - and, happy sketching!

Thank you! Seeing these pages and pages of perfectly executed drawings and curated and arranged study pages pages and looking at my own sketchbook is such a mess.

100%! My sketchbooks are basically brain vomits. Totally agree too much prep causes me to lose interest as well. Some pages might have a finished drawing, but only because I wanted to do a finished drawing that day. Great video, glad you showed up in my feed 👍👍

I've started not caring about making my sketchbooks neat anymore and I've felt more confident and been drawing more. I've had terrible pages in the past, but never really embraced it. I thank you for this video

That's awesome that you're actually drawing more - it makes sense and is actually a really great point, so thanks so much for chiming in! And, for tuning in as well.

Thank you, I usually feel really discouraged when my art does not come out like those pages I'd see on pinterest. I struggle with perfection when it comes to sketchbooks haha. your video really helped me, thank you!

Thank you so much for making this video. for a while now I’ve been hating working in sketchbooks because I was so pressured to make every page look good and was too scared to step out my comfort zone because I didn’t want it to look bad because a lot of people at my school always looked at my sketchbooks it is also why I never drew at home 😢

Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment! It’s comments like yours that make me feel like it’s worth it to keep trying to make videos that might connect and resonate with someone. Keep drawing and don’t worry too much about all the voices telling you not to do it or to do it differently - every drawing you draw can only be drawn by you. 🙂

I do have some sketchbooks where the layouts look planned and beautiful but most of my sketchbook look really bad. Thank you for this video. Oh I also tend to write lots and lots of notes.
@edlundart
@edlundart 9 месяцев назад
It's great to hear from a fellow note-scribbler! Sometimes it's just faster to write some shorthand for what I want to do, rather than drawing it, if it's a simple enough thing that I know I can execute without a sketch. And then I also just jot down all kinds of other notes that don't even always pertain to my art - I guess my sketchbooks are like extensions of my brain, so all kinds of things end up in there. And yes, even the occasional beautiful drawing, lol. Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated!

I think my sketchbooks are a mix of both... sometimes just planning and prepping if I'm doing finished pieces, other times I'm just putting whatever I want on it with no purpose or end goal lol

Nothing wrong with that! Sounds like your sketchbook is a judgment free zone, which seems good 👍 Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

My sketchbook is more of a shitbook tbh. I hate carrying more than one book with me so my braindump, my work schedule, receipts and a ton of concepts live. I have a stack of more finished work afterwards because this woman ain't got time to make pretty sketchbooks.

And that is why it is called a sketchbook and not a masterpiecebook. If you look at the exposed sketchbooks of famous artists, lots of scribbles and notes.

I do my finished pieces in sketchbooks because otherwise i just lose them, lol. I do small “ugly” sketches, of course, but i do them on scrap paper and throw them away when im done. I hope that will explain how ppl with pretty sketchbooks actually do it sometimes.
@edlundart
@edlundart 9 месяцев назад
That's definitely a way to go - I think if, essentially, someone's sketchbook is their main artistic venue, then it makes perfect sense to focus lots of attention on it. Thanks so much for adding your perspective on this, and thanks for watching!
@lunayen

Thus killing the purpose of the sketchbook, which is a place for both ugly and "pretty" images.

@@lunayeni doubt there is set in stone purpose for sketchbook, exept for convenience of having a lot of paper stitched together

I love all sketchbooks. ❤️ I have 3 or 4 going at once. Mainly for different mediums. Much love ❤️ 🙏. What you do with your sketchbook definitely makes sense for animation. You have to start it somewhere, I don't think they are bad drawings they are a foundation. Much love ❤️ 🙏

The motion graphics in my RU-vid videos are done in After Effects. The animation work I show in this video, and my work generally, is done in After Effects and Blender. The hand-drawn stuff, like that bathtub scene, is mostly Grease Pencil within Blender. Thanks for watching!

Danny Gregory sums it up by saying some sketchbooks do look ugly AF. Others are actually illustrated journals. 'Sketchbook' is often misused as a name for #IllustratedJournal

You make a good point - perhaps we ought to employ more nuanced language for what our various books actually are meant to do and be. Thanks for that insight, and for watching!

I never did the pretty sketchbook, any I have had were started in the middle with random pictures everywhere and if I really liked it it was torn out and framed and if it was so awful I threw it away, so the sketchbooks I own are a mish mash of blank grubby papers ghost images of sketches that used to be there and mediocre drawings, especially when I was using charcoal and pastel. Now I usually use watercolor blocks, so if you want to do another one, you must remove the previous one. So now I have piles .....😂and stacks 😂
@edlundart
@edlundart 8 месяцев назад
Oh yeah, I too have torn out pages, even half cut pages, here and there in my sketchbooks. And to me, the kinds of pages you describe, the ones that are still there and the ones that are torn out - all that sounds like signs of utility, which I like. It's cool to me when sketchbooks are like gears grinding... the artifacts of a thinking artist! Even if our thoughts are not always up to genius standard. 🤣 Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

My sketchbook is probably the messiest. They are just drawings over drawings using the same pencil.
