For me, external seat clamp, threaded BB and sensible cable routing all makes sense for an endurance bike. But if I want to do a winter Audax I need some luggage, and the lights make that almost impossible, and the battery puts the bottle higher up the down tube, that will limit the volume of liquid short riders can carry. In short, the electronic package limits the bike to short rides, which seems a bit daft for a distance bike.

I love the switch to the threaded bb, and the ease of routing, and even going back to 27.2, which makes it easy to swap out for a preferred seat post. They did some really great things in my opinion. Having to have the unwanted tech however, not so much.

Hi, threaded bottom bracket is using outer nuts with pressed in bearings so the only difference is the frame interface and its ease of manufacturing. And the moment when we all accepted a bit heavier bikes acknowledging aero is king compared to weight, frame manufacturers can get back to inner aluminium sleeves with threads which are easier to be produced precisely and are easier to be maintained. Biggest true is as David said, press-fit works well if done well and properly, and thats down to manufacturing costs of frame production. And given we don't prices going down it is more about space for margin:-)

Great content, as always. REALLY GLAD Cannondale took their first step away from BB30 in over 20-years. I hope the next iteration of the SusperSix features threaded bottom bracket and 27.2mil seat post. (Personally, I love the external seat post collar...) As for the new Synapse; I really love it and while I think the integrated lighting is a bit presumptive on Cannondale's part, I really love the radar sensing tech that has found its way into a modern 'all road' platform.

To cross thread a 1,37x24 or ITA 36x24 mm BB shell in a bike frame takes some doing! A MECHANIC not a pizza maker would FIRST pass a BB thread cleaning tool through the shell, AND THEN clean it with compressed air, and degreasing solvent,and then move on to assembling the BB cups. Most pizza makers on the otherhand, just take a hammer to the BB30 cups n bearing assemblies and Knock em in and out!!!! Thus giving you a SIS (Shimano Index System for those who don't know what SIS means) style bearing rotation feel. Great vids David as usual, honest and thorough!

I really like the Cannondale and there is some well thought out features. The lights would be ok if their was some brighter options. Great for daytime as is but I commute regularly on 800 lumens and often need more. I like Cervelos approach with their Caledonia. Optional brackets that fit to sat nav mounts and saddle clamps with a Go-Pro fitting. Gives you a lot more options!

Great job! I like what Cannondale has done in every regard except for forcing a light/radar system on the buyer. I think a better way to have gone for the buyer would be to incorporate features that would facilitate a clean install of these features IF the customer wanted. Similar to having mud guard mounts incorporated on a frame to allows for a clean, secure installation of mud guards.

My dad was a bike mechanic for 40+ years, and in his shop, I have witnessed lots of seized threaded BB, rounded off small knots, cracked paintwork, injured hands and you name it. Press-fit BB are easy to install with the proper tools, harder to get out, but far from impossible. No paint scratch, no creeks. The bad reputation that a lot of press-fit BB have earned is not surprisingly down to cost. Even the best Shimano BB is almost pure plastic for less than 20 Euros, whereas you can go and buy a good quality BB from Wheels Manufacturing, C-bear from Belgium or Ceramic Speed, and you will notice the differences straight away. I went with C-bear, and have only nice things to tell after more than 2000 km bedding in. As always were good work from Just Ride Bikes!

I watched the Synapse video but forgot to leave a comment there. I think, it’s great for someone who has a lot of money and is just about to enter the market. It’s a pay and ride bike. No need to hunt for lights upon purchase. The lights are fit and forget which is quite nice. However, for people who already have been riding for years, I am sure they already have a set of preferred lights. BUT, I can still see how nice it is to not having to change lights as you change bikes. Pay and just ride the bike. In this case, it was the new Synapse. I think the idea is nice. Going to threaded BB and standard seatpost is nice too. Weight weenies can go to MCFK, Darimo and THM if they’d like.

These new Canyon bikes seem to offer a lot of value for money, something I have not seen for quite a while... AND they seem to be available! That's even more incredible... Endurace CF SL 8 Aero for 4.8k Euro, which comes with carbon wheels, Ultegra Di2, powermeter, ... That is in the 6k and up league for other main brands... The new Endurance SL & SLX are already on the site in Belgium/Netherlands (and available for order with delivery in March)

Love the design of the new Synapse but the smart sense system if kind of a meh from me. Given that it's an endurance road bike I'd prefer to lose the battery and add an extra bottle cage to the front triangle. Unless you get the top spec that has an integrated cockpit the light mounting looks a little clunky.

I have ridden the old synapse and loved it. Was looking forward to the new synapse as I'm soon going to be in the market for a new road bike (probably with a endurance flavour). Cannondale appear to have totally ruined it! Threaded BB and external seat clamp excellent, but wtf were they thinking with the battery pack and lighting. Defeat from the jaws of victory!

@treyquattro
@treyquattro 2 года назад
the Canyon direct-to-consumer pricing is always going to be better than the equivalent spec from a traditional LBS sales channel model. Personally, dropped seat stays and the threaded BB are winners on the Cannondale for me. I expect the top-end Endurace with a Dura-Ace groupset to be a good 2,000 GBP less than the Synapse however. That's hard to argue with, especially in these economically and inflationary challenging times. Will be interested to see weight differences; obviously the Cannondale will be penalized by the integrated light and radar system weight, I don't see that as a huge negative however as I'd be interested in either bike more for off-season riding where lights and indeed radar would be more of a necessity than a pared-down racing machine for summer riding (smaller lights still required for safety)

Question: does the radar work in cities? DC Rainmaker reviewed the Varia radar and indicated that it was pretty lacklustre for city use. One comment on that vid suggests that it is useful, but "If a car is right behind you traveling at the same speed, the warning light strip turns green, so there is a blind spot."

I think the Synapse is just kind of fine. Given what the bike is really geared towards the external routing isn't that big of a deal. I personally don't like the look but it's not a deal breaker. The battery...I wish that was better integrated it feels like an after thought. They could have done some kind of in frame storage solution. Overall I think it's a fine bike. The issue with pressfit is not that they were bad the problem is that they require high tolerances and as far as I understand from mechanics there’s only two brands that really got it right with pressfits it would be look and BMC. Most brands were either too tight or too loose made a ton of noises were parallel. And then there was a bunch of shady companies that would just not take care of their warranties

Also the ride sense is a good idea with the lights imo but I hate the service data you haven't really touched on... The bike brings up when a service is due etc via the APP. Nice to see a return of good value bikes like the Canyon. Hopefully a balancing of supply and demand in the near future will see a return to more sensible pricing and availability. A lot of things on the new Synapse appear a bit ugly e.g. the seat clamp…there are plenty of elegant external clamp solutions out there. I dislike all “add ons” to my bike and only use them if absolutely necessary as I feel they spoil the purity of appearance but I am a bit of a design snob and I’m sure lots of people love these stick on gadgets…

Owner of an older Canyon Endurace CF SL disc, cannot say enough good things about it. Only detractor is that the front end was quite harsh from the factory (perhaps owing to that oversized steerer), but swapping the aluminum bar/stem for Canyon's one-piece "ergo" carbon cockpit improved comfort considerably. For what it's worth, the older disc Endurace would clear 35's with a little bit of room, so unsure if the new stated clearance is an actual change or if Canyon is just stating the tire clearance more realistically.

The move to press fit was to provide a stiffer platform for the axles (and weight)? Is the move back to external because carbon layups are now sufficiently advanced that companies can produce a really stiff BB area that rivals a press fit?

Press fit is much better than threaded, in theory. In reality it is difficult to precisely align the cups within fine tolerances during manufacturing. Especially when young ladies in the fab have to churn out 100 frames a day on low pay. A threaded cup is much easier and faster.

The cynic in me sees that Cannonale are maximising profit on the Synapse Firstly move to a bsa bb means no complicated cannondale bb30 chainring and cranks to make in house that will be increasingly more costly to manufacture due to new ramping patterns etc needed for new groupsets rather than taking manufacturers oem cranks In addition easier to manufacture the frame and reduce cost for bsa bb as opposed to pressfit Secondly 27.2mm seatpost ,easier to source and manufacture than previous seat-post of 25.4mm along with simpler seat clamp design Thirdly charge a higher price for technology that they have secured at a lower market price and force it on to buyers increasing profit margin Regards tyre clearance I suppose it’s designed primarily for the American market where the gravel surfaces are more hard pack than other places in the world where the surfaces may be a bit more gnarly like the Uk where wider tyres would be needed. Lastly do we think the frame is 7% more compliant through dropped stays or through wider standard tyres, surely the 27.2mm seatpost doesn’t do the compliance any favours compared to 25.4mm so was compliance as important as profit?
@TenSapphires

My thougts exactly. I dont mind Synapse for what it is, but price rub me the wrong way. If you are spending a lot of money for a bike and looks are important Synapse have some uglines to it: exposed cables, seatclamp, battery pack, dull colors...If you are giving a lot of money for do-it-all bike then its to far limited: tire clearence isnt so great, you cant fit your existing electronic, cant put some regular sadle bags... If only it wasnt priced that much I think it would be much better received. I really want to have price increase insider data because I think some companies are using part shortages and inflation to overprice their products. They are glad to put a lot of money in marketing but I dontk not so much in materials and engeneering...

The biggest issue I hear people talk about is battery life, which is just ignorance. Those lights don't last more than 2hrs on full beam when sold separately, that battery is bigger giving longer life. People are quoting a lower lumen runtime and comparing it which is unfair. As for the mounting of seat packs... There is a frame bag, front bag and bento box.. But even if you do need a saddle bag it might be possible, we need to see how that light connects. Front light also, how does it connect? Can we swap out the cables to use any light? Personally I love the direction cannondale is taking things, but in future they might want to keep the battery and have internal routing for usb cables coming from it. Then a wealth of aftermarket lights and gps etc can be run off it.

Dropping bb30 is the best thing Cannondale have ever done! Press fit is good if the manufacturers put the time and effort needed into it. Obviously, many companies including Cannondale don’t have the ability to manufacture a frame with a circular hole and to the correct specs! One piece BBs like that from Hambini are head and shoulders better than anything on the market. Cannondale have done a lot right in my eyes with this, except making people buy a bike with this integrated system of lights and radar with that terrible battery on the frame which will be obsolete in a few years.

Not sure if BB30 is dead. Race-specific bikes might still keep it. However, the Synapse usually the trend setter for Cannondale road bikes. We'll see once the CAAD13 and current SS Evo replacements arrive. I wouldn't be surprised though. Cannondale seems to have lost their way in my opinion. The current level of quality isn't what they were even 5 years ago Maybe changes like the threaded BB and going back to 27.2 seatpost. As for exposed cables handlebars is smart. I think BB30 was dead long ago. It's too narrow - 68mm. The problem with going to BSA is the issue of 30mm axles. Fitting them into the space is a serious problem. I note that Cannondale have stopped supplying their spider with that bike as a consequence.

I don't think the new endurace is racey by any stretch. The stack and reach are almost exactly the same as the trek domane, it even comes with 20mm extra headset spacers so as far as I can tell it's the most relaxed (least racey) endurance bike on the market. Sure, the CF SL is still on the racey end

Cannondale only changed the crappy BB and 3rd party chainset on the premium bikes. Same crappy BB on the AL and cheaper versions.

I do hope pressfit bottom brackets go extinct, because it’s a phaf to do maintenance or any upgrades but mostly the creaking from these type of bottom brackets… I’m happy with what Cannondale dit with their bike, it’s after all an endurance bike. Not a all out race bike.

i think people are forgetting the Synapse is an Endurance bike, not an aero or lightweight hill climber

how can Canyon launch new bikes?? the 2021 bikes have been out of stock for at least 6 months now. Wanted to buy one, but there's still no outlook as to when they're available, could be months. so instead bought a different one. Also a hefty price hike of 200,- on the exact same model

i am light years prefer the pressfit bearing, but the manufactures insist in press the bearings in shit adapters instead pressing direct on the frame like every mechanical shit in the world. all my bikes i converted to pressfit bearing on frame, and is very hard to understand why lots bb exists.

Why didn’t Canyon use the opportunity to add fender mounts??? Would make this the ultimate (pun intended) commuter bike.

I've asked Canyon this in the past and they say they just don't see the demand for them which does seem crazy to me

@@davidarthur Thats strange. I have a Endurace disc 2018 model and the only thing that would make me consider upgrading the whole bike is fender mounts. The pack mount I dont care about at all, though its a nice feature.

threaded bb is a win for everyone. removable battery is a win for me. not having it inside the frame makes life easier for everyone.

The brands return to threaded bb's due to his inability to do a rounded hole within a certain specifications. And all of this when they charge more than 3000€ for a frameset. What a shame.

Canyon has a real opportunity to steal market share and build brand loyalty in new customers with their new ENDURACE. While other companies are adding crap and bumping up prices, CANYON is simplifying and keeping prices at expectation level. (New bike buyers CANNOT understand a $5k bike!)
