I am a proudly free-to-play player, so I'm happy to say that my relationship with Pokemon Go is not toxic to my wallet, only to my free time, not relaxing when I have the chance, not going to bed until after midnight because I need to get that 12am Rocket balloon. And also my safety, walking around after dark with no jacket, barely paying attention to my surroundings, and in the winter getting nearly frostbitten on my fingers.
@Tejz1001
@Tejz1001 День назад
But... just get to bed early (9pm to 11pm) and get the balloon before 6am (by waking at 5am)... well nowadays I only sleep 6 to 7 hours so it works to me...

Exactly! I have played since 2016, never spend anything on the game. I think spending money on pokemon go only makes the game less fun as you are technically just “buying” the pokemon instead of grinding for it and being proud of yourself when you finally get it.

i completed a marathon the other day and that was the longest 6 hours I've gone without playing PoGo in a year. It was pretty nice. But I work on the medals I want and if I forget something to do in a day then it's not a huge issue. I also don't pay money to the game. It's just a really fun hobby that I enjoy. I also love the game mechanics of having to go outside and get exercise. my family that's overweight picks on me for playing but whatever.

Honestly Pokemon Go has made me more active. It was my main motivation to go for a walk to a park, now I go for hour walks daily and even bought a pokemon go plus + so I dont even stare at my phone screen 24/7 and the walks turn into runs and it has just been a net positive for me.
@PeterMurrayj

@@Cr-rd4bu yeah the pokémon Go plus helps with that but there's a lot of features in the game that don't encourage in person interaction and you end up with not talking and looking at the screen so you meet up with people and then you don't interact with them (PVP, rocket battles, cleaning inventory, etc). Dynamax raids are what is making my relationship with Pokemon Go start to become toxic. I can't let a day go by without collecting my daily maximum amount of MP and doing the maximum number of Dynamax raids possible, all in the pursuit of hundos that I can power up to use in future Dynamax raids, where the process just starts again. It's a vicious cycle. It also doesn't help that most Dynamax Pokemon stubbornly refuse to have even decent IVs.

I think that's his point. It's a game. Letting it negatively affect your life is not something that should happen. I'm guilty of this as well. I'm not addicted to the point where I'll put family aside so I can go play. I'm at the point where the game isn't inherently enjoyable. It feels like a chore. New Pokemon drops, I need to go find it. It's not a game, it's an errand. I should quit the game. There are better things I can use time on that will actively improve my life. But like Dax said, I think about the time I've sunk into this game, and I can't uninstall.

I've had mixed experiences with the community aspect of Pokemon Go. Most of the time during regular play, I'm like what you said out at my local park alone doing the daily grind. But during things like rate hours, rate days, and general big events where my community does get together, there's a lot of socializing. During Go Fest, we had a pack of people just walking around the park, chasing down raids, catching and chit chatting with each other.

It’s been great for me and yes it gives me joy… I’m still super ticked they changed my avatar as I did look like mine and I would change my outfit 1-3 times a day. Now, I hide my face due to that. I hate the new avatar. Other than that time of being pissed off, the game is awesome. Thru POGO, I met friends in town and always have something to do to keep me busy all day and night. The game is usually on 24/7. I do know when it’s time to close the app when it comes to life. I enjoy the game. Especially, when I catch shinys.💙

Pokemon Go is like an old MMO, the gameplay isn't all that exciting the majority of the time but you stick with it and grind every day while waiting for those moments of peak excitement when you get something rare and can share it with your community. The game is designed to encourage people to meet up which is a design of retention because if you want to stop playing, your not just walking away from the daily grind, your also walking away from all the people you meet up with. Couple that with FOMO and it's a very addictive game.
@teh_longinator
@teh_longinator 16 часов назад
I love that you associated PoGo with MMO, because that's exactly what I thought when he was talking. I had a hard time quitting Final Fantasy 14 because of the "wasted sub costs" associated it. But I eventually knew I had to quit, because I felt like I HAD to play to justify the fee... not that I WANTED to play. Pokemon Go feels the same way. I'm playing out of habit, and obligation... not because I enjoy it any more.

@@teh_longinator I was a Lineage 2 player back when it was more popular on private servers. I sunk thousands of hours into it because you had to, to keep up. Just a click to move and spam a button to delete mobs game, but that was just the daily grind for XP and equipment. What kept me playing was the rush you used to get from a PvP encounter and winning it, the best XP locations were always contested so you were always on edge. The weekly sieges were also some of the most fun I've ever had playing a game. PoGo feels the same somewhat, the rush comes from getting a shundo or something, I don't even play gbl lol.

I am a day one player, played on and off for till the end of 2018. I got on the game every now and again for at most 4 days each in 2019, 2021, 2022. I probably am slightly addicted to pokemon go now ever since I got back into the game in June 2023 since I try not to miss any big events like go fest, go tours, raid day(not raid hours), or community days. One main thing my wife and I do is we started going for hours long walks with our dog and son to do routes around the neighborhood and take down gym at the park. We started this in August 2024 and I've actually dropped 20ish pounds. This one lady in my neighborhood talked to my wife and I when we were walking this past Saturday and she said that she could tell that I lost a bunch of weight from doing a daily walk and said that I inspired her to walk as well. It's pretty neat seeing my daily routine can inspire others to do the same thing. I didn't tell her about pokemon go but it's can work wonders if you do it right. Hoping to lose at least another 20 lbs just because I want to!

I have a friend who played in 2016 and didn't come back to the game until after remote raids were a thing. They weren't nerfed yet, and Mewtwo was in raids. I never got him to tell me exactly how many he did, but he did say it got unhealthy. The nerf on remote raids, while it made him nearly quit, made it to where he had a much healthier relationship with the game afterward because he had to change how he played. He now grinds hard in PvP now. PoGo has sooo many things to do that if you're unhappy with your current gameplay and don't want to quit, you can just change how you play and what you do in the game.

Very good topic Daxi! Great video! When i were pondering what you said in the video 2 important things come to mind 1. "Balance" the hardest part and the most fluid of all your things in life is very hard to achieve. But i think sometimes you have to take a step back like you do and look at what you are doing and why? And ask yourself simple things like "is it ok to miss that 5 star raid that is hatching in 10 min? I will be late to pick up my kids but its ok right? i might not get another chance to enter when im at home..." and sometimes you just have to take that "easy" decision to skip some things in life because after all its not as important as other things in your life. And the number 2 thing is: "Control", you have to take control of the game dont let advertisement and online soceiety dictate how you should play the game or when. Its your experience your "journey" dont let the game take control it is a very important thing that i personally had to learn the hard way many years ago. I stopped playing for about 3 years cause i didnt enjoy the game i came back this summer, and to me seeing what the game has become it feels more fun for me because there are more aspects of the game now that werent there before. For example the change on megas felt much better for me considering how it was in in the beginning. So overall it feels better this time around because i felt when i stop walking and start driving around in my car to play this game it loses purpose to me(driving nonstop). And i would say variation is important to keep me having fun in this game... like sometimes i walk sometimes a bike sometimes the car and its important to not get stuck in a loop and the game has for me kinda nailed the variation bit but failed in the money chase bit where they without hesitation try to monetize all aspects of the game as much as possible to tempt you in whatever you do! And thats probably the hardest part in this. And what i did was i have a pc-gaming addiction but instead of just stepping away from it completely, i changed the platform and the way i play with more focus on PoGO to change the sitting by a computer day by day to instead go out in the rain cause i have dailies to do in PoGO! And sometimes the first step can be just that. shifting your focus just a little and bam you open doors for other things in life. So as you say dont be Afraid to do things different

I find if I want to collect, which is what I like to do, I'm a dex completionist, More and more often they want me to show out money or devote way more time to the game than I'm willing to. Before having kids, it was a lot easier and it was actually good for me. It got me out of the house and active. But since having kids, it's become more and more of a stress and feels more like one more chore to do than something fun that also got me active.

I have been playing on and off ever since release about 10 days after it came out. Played it basically non-stop for two years and took a three year break, came back and a few months later I lost my account and all the Pokemon in it. So that pretty much upset me heavily so I took another break until March of this year, taking more care of my stuff and now I'm on the road to Level 43. Pokemon Go has basically changed my life socially, I struggled with heavy depression and I unfortunately still do, but if it wasn't for the game then I don't know if I'd even be here right now typing this. Have gone out for so many events (mostly Community Days & GO Fests). Although I am now just playing the game for the sake of playing it, and I'm not enjoying it as much as I normally do. I'm taking a few days break right now until Halloween Part 2 and then another one until Dialga and Palkia come back and then most likely take a way longer break, like 1-2 months but we'll see. honestly, i have had a toxic relationship with the game for the past year. i played it as a coping mechanism from losing a lot of my friends around that time cause progressing in a game by myself allowed me to forget about all the other things happening. i dont go out as much anymore cause i have almost everything available but when i do go out, i go out hard and its def a problem. i fully saw this when the mega rayquaza elite raids came around and when i couldnt get one done and was wasting raid passes, i got really angry and begged my mom to drive me to my local downtown. I finally realized i had a problem and im glad i have almost everything now. i only go out for raids and special events but I will admit its still kind of a problem. i gotta stop keeping my phone open all the time expecting a shiny to be right there. i gotta stop going out in freezing weather trying to get a raid boss. if anything. maybe i should be spending coins on remote raids so i can get certain legendaries and mega into my dex without actually going out in that terrible weather and feeding my terrible playing habits, especially with winter right around the corner.

my take on the marathon thing, running is insanely hard, but i believe in mental training in a sense, there are tribes & hour+ documentaries i have watched that show people running half marathons a day to just maybe eat. if that is your 'normal' in a sense and you live to that lifestyle itll become easier. I have been playing on rollerblades recently which makes the game much faster pace for me but it makes it very tiresome doing 20-30km+ a day but im a week into this cycle and its unironically becoming easier. Im going to almost try and take on a mental challenge to force myself to almost think "i need to be able to move this much" in a sense. Every human has Olympian potential & i think people just gotta normalize moving, 40% of americans dont walk over like 1 or 2 miles in a week.

10:25, my problem with this and the next few minutes is that point i mentioned before; moving is life, i cant judge how people live their lives but in all honesty pokemon go is a net positive imo. its going to always be better than sitting inside and playing fifa or 2k or minecraft. sinking cost fallacy is a good example especially for gambling and spending money in general on stuff. I am free to play but time is the most important investment. as a player of hypixel skyblock being very wealthy all throughout the game, people play games for their own goals. If someone dosent see growth or enjoyable improvement they will consider stopping or finding something new.

I am for sure addicted to Pokemon go, admittedly, but also…this game is one of the only a couple reasons I am still here. Sadly struggle with a lot of anxiety and depression so aside from this game and my partner, I’m not living for much. Each day is just existing and going through the motions, I’m sure a lot of others can relate to that too

addiction is a hard topic because while it is a mental disorder, it also carries across generations in your DNA. There are better addictions than others for sure, much better to catch virtual creatures than to put needles in your arm. Just know there’s always greener grass once you seek help!! thanks for the yap daxi

Don't know addiction to pokemon go only reason I haven't quit yet is because most of my friends remained on the game about the only reason I play almost daily is sending gifts. If Pokemon Go were to ever go offline I doubt I would go outside much since too much toxic behavior from people in my area so I try to avoid everyone as much as possible(Even thought that is what I been doing originally only now it is even worse). On the positive side I haven't met any toxic players. As far the game itself I got to level 50, most of the Pokedex completed(missing like 3 or 4 pokemon) and over 45 platinum medals so not like I would be missing much. Not sure if I will keep playing daily in the next 5 years like I have for 4 years gets tiring after a while. and the way how Niantic treats the playerbase sometimes made me not want to check out their other games.

I had a great moment today when I chose to go home and have lunch instead of going to a meet up for the gmax raids because I’d been to the gym and mowed my nanas lawns and lost track of time. I considered going because I ‘didn’t want to miss out’ but then I thought, no these aren’t special or overly useful, who cares it’s just a game and there is more chances to do them in future. Super peaceful and correct decision from me there.

I must say that I had multiple problems with my neck and headaches with constantly staring at my phone while playing Pokemon go every day. I stopped playing the game 2 weeks ago and I feel better physically and mentally, I have more free time and I focus on real life so it was definitely a great step for me that I do not regret. I still enjoy watching the pokemon go videos but I am happy "I am free" from the game.

This is gonna be a bit long I think I used to have a slightly toxic addiction. I would be on it as much as possible and just not want to get off, even if I accomplished my goal. I would also get unreasonably angry at things in the game. These days I’m more casual, still a bit quick to the game when I can use my phone, but I don’t get crazy mad anymore.

Pokémon Go for me is a double edge sword. While I love going outside to exercise, it has helped reduced my cholesterol levels by running/walking. But on the other hand my mom is worry wart and doesn’t even consider about my reasoning why I go outside more often than usual. My cholesterol. She just wants me to stay with her at home. Indoors. Nothing to do there.

Together with a slight disgust for the money grabbing Niantic's politic, my personal way to get free from my Pokemon Go addition was to substitute it with another Pokemon addition: Pokemon Sleep. At least with the latter I regained my sleeping regularity, a nice before sleep, a good morning routine and regained a lot of time during the day. And differently from Go it doesn't requires grinding.

it's crazy, that you making this video now, legit 3 month ago i took 4 months break to prove it was not an addication but a commitment and enjoyment to get out walking. also, it could be really cool, to see your storage, like a run down of the legendary's or like maybe do a generation, like show candy and do slow swiping where we can see the best pokemon living dex you have, or speciel like shadow metagross or something cool ^^

in your case work life balance is important. i dont think its addiction that you enjoy your work, but i can see the diminishing returns in your case. not everyone can play as intense you may do. taking a long break is alright. my longest break from the main series was 5 years, but i found other things close to pokemon to keep my love for the series. it sounds like your work has taken too much from you and making other content would be a great mental refresh. GoFlex your creative juices Daxi and come back later. you can still make guides whilst playing casually and making new and off pokemon content if you want or just go on VaCation for a bit. we'll miss you but your mental health is important.

I’m glad to see some positive comments here because this community can be more toxic than the game. I genuinely enjoy playing the game and when I’m not I just set it down for a while. Anytime I’m excited to read about a new feature, event or just check in to see what the community is talking about it’s always a barrage of negativity. It can really ruin the fun for me to see everyone hating on literally every tiny thing. Criticism about issues and bugs is important but saying everything sucks all of the time is not good for anyone.

I already have enough hundo 5* for me to be satisfied not putting money into game. Plus it’s ridiculous you can do over 200+ raids of same Pokemon & still not get a hundo lmao. Gmax will be a complete swerve. No idea why they would bring something into the game that requires so much. Sure there is ways out there to coordinate raids etc but every feature should be for everyone there will be so many players that can barely do regular raids never mind these ridiculous requirements. Baffling decision from niantic.

35:35 If we aren't able to do remote raids or anything with people that aren't local to us, they should do away with the scatter bugs and medals where you need long distances etc. Because the only way you could get those things would be if you travel and not everyone can afford to travel and that's not really fair to have that type of stuff in the game. Just my opinion.

Pokémon go is a game that in some ways is a good thing for socialising and making friends but it can be addictive because of all the time, effort and money put into the game. Overall, it is an enjoyable game that I play with my friends and we go out once or twice a week to play together and have a good time. Though we also do other things like play tenis and get active whal having a good time with your buddies
