Your Twin Cam 88 Can Be Much More Than A 95 Cubic Inch

The solution for more power on a Twin Cam 88 has long been a 95ci bolt on big bore kit. But why settle for a 95 incher when the aftermarket offers bolt on kits all the way up to 100 cubic inches! You've got some serious options with bolt on kits that require no case boring. Fuel Moto, S&S and Revolution Performance offer competitive kits that make more reliable power than the Screamin Eagle 95 bolt on big bore.

Would you stay with a 95 inch kit or go with the 97, 98 or even the 100 inch Sidewinder bolt on?

As I’ve posted before I did do the SE 95 set up on my 2002 FXDL. I did add an oil cooler. The power is decent and the motor has been unbelievably reliable. I think if I was going to upgrade again that S&S 100 Sidewinder Kit looks mean and super easy. Also fairly cheap.

I enjoyed you video on the 88". I went with S&S Sidewinder 100" with screaming eagle 254E cams, at the time of the build the fly wheels were bad . They were sent out to Dark Horse crank works . They repaired them lighten& trued them .I put the 254E cams in myself .At the time of cams I had it on the Dyno, It tuned out at 79.7 hp & 80.5 ft lb of torq . It also had Fuel injectors upgraded to the 29 degree also fueling cam plate & high volume oil pump. I also put in the screaming eagle Sprocket compensator , the Harley variable pressure plate in the clutch in prep for the 100" . I don't know the what the out put is right now as I also upgraded the ECM to the thunder Max. I scared the hell out of a 117cu road glide one night would have smoked him but broke my clutch cable . I did this build on a 2006 Dyna Streetbob . my build is about a year old .

@@GixxerFoo I agree with you, I've been doing this for a number of years and I have less than 6 vendors that are extremely reputable in the aftermarket world. (It fits like it should and everything I need is included in the package) so I've learned I don't mind paying the couple extra bucks for quality and service. HD upgrades can be expensive and I can't tell you how many times I talk to people that have ordered stuff that didn't give you everything you need. My friend I would like to thank you, you have save me money dealing with my 2006 Road King 88 engine. I have owned four HD from 2006 RK, Electric Guilds to two Harleys Trikes 2016 and 2018. I still have my 06 Road King and of all the bikes I stated a second ago I love my 88 more then the others. I still have the 06 RK because I still LOVE the American Dream, about a month ago I traded my 2018 trike for a Honda Goldwing DCT, and my reason for the trade is because I was so tired of investment of my money into two bikes with the problem being the M8 not the 88 RK. I want to travel Long distance without the worry of a HD brake down. The RK is for small short trips around town and the GW is for long distance trips. In short and again thank you for your information that is power to customers owners of HD products, other upgrades products and last I STILL LOVE HARLEY-DAVISON MOTORCYCLES

That's the best way to do it honestly, Hammer Performance does that too. Hammer's thoughts are they bore your cylinder out to the max, ride it till it's wore out, and buy some new twin cam cylinders for about $280 each. It's a huge savings over the kits just boring your factory cylinders.

Yes that would be correct , but, on my 88 I’ve found that the kits only offer the basic kit, and, I’m kind of lost as to what I need to actually buy, and, I don’t want to order parts I don’t need. I honestly think I could manage the install, but, my mechanic ability Belgians to fail the order forms like; do I need a install kit, do I need new bearing , can I use my stock cam plate and oil pump, if I buy the 100 sidewinder do I need new valve springs, should I by new heads or send them out to be reworked, which parts should be installed first. I think a video explaining this on a 96 or a 88 would be a very informative video.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
You can still use your stock heads with the 100 inch kit, even the stock cam if you wanted to. It just wouldn't take full advantage of the added displacement. Valve springs are really dependent on the cam you use, cam manufacturers will specify if you can run stock springs or if you need to upgrade. Just depends how aggressive the cam is, now replacing bearings is all a good idea with a build. The stock cam plates are fine, but a billet cam plate adds more support but isn't really necessary unless you really ride hard.

Omar Salgado well my stator melted this summer because of the insane heat and humidity (and exactly as you said -being caught in a traffic jam). But it was 18 years old and this is central Japan 🥵 so what do I expect eh? I’ve never had an oil cooled engine before because my bikes have always been Yamahas or Suzuki’s built for these brutal summers. Live and learn. Thanks for your comment. As for bike as a non-investment I agree. My investments and savings are there to pay for things like this and that’s part of the joy of life if you are blessed enough to afford it. But I will say that ....selling a made-in-Shizuoka Yamaha SR400 (single /40 year old design) for an older dyna with built-in issues WAS one of the stupider things I’ve ever done. I’ve gone from loving riding in the mountains to quietly dreading it. Will it break down YET AGAIN? Will it cost me another 1K or another 2K? What’s next -the starter? The main bearing ? The transmission bearing ? I’ve realized that riding an older Harley is a hobby and should be your second or third bike. The first one or two being Japanese or newer harleys (and you have a serious garage and tools) So I half agree with you and half can’t quite see due to the mistake I’ve made of listening to Harley fans Who won’t objectively look at their bikes (out of loyalty and ego) and only encourage others to be more like them. But live and learn and be grateful for even having a beautiful old motorcycle , a luxury in and of itself. This I Know Happy riding and cheers 🍻

@@shizuokaBLUES Such a sad thing, really. I think you bought a seriously trashed bike. I say this because I own two H-Ds, one since very brand new 2007 Sportster and a used 2005 Softail, which both have needed maintenance, one from abuse and the other from being stored almost seven years, but not tragic failures. Indeed, I can state that the abused one, the Sportster, has stood all the beating like a champ. I remember one day that I rode it for 14 continuous hours and it never hesitated. Indeed, the stator broke years later due to maintenance negligence. That's why I say you bought a very abused bike in the interior. But overall, if proper maintenance is done in time and form, the bikes are bulletproof, and though I own a couple, I'm not that of a fan, because I like other brands, including the Japanese sport bikes. I have to tell you that any bike will have its issues if abused and not maintained, including the Japanese ones, which I've seen broken down on the road. Greetings.

The case bore is smaller on the 88 so the drop on jugs won't fit the 88. You'd need to go with 95 inch cylinders and then a stroker crank. The 100 inch drop on kit the biggest one out there for the 88 with the stock crank.

How much torque would I be giving up to keep the exhaust? Is that ok or do I really need to change them? Also do I need new cam tensioners and an oil cooler for this upgrade? What would you do to kick it up to this decade without breaking the bank and also keep the reliability? Also do I need to also get the frame brace or replace the engine mounts if I add torque- or can the old frame handle it? And how much about would I have to pay in to get all this work done?

You wouldn't really give up much if anything with the SE exhaust of that era, with the factory header it's really the best of both worlds. You get the sound of a 2 into 2 with the power of a 2 into 1. 2006 Dyna already has the hydraulic tensioners, they only did that on the Dyna that year. The cases are basically 96 cases with a bore for 88 cylinders and the heads are what basically later became the heads of the 96. Great year for the dyna! The 100 kit will drop and you'll want a good cam too, S&S 585 is a good Dyna cam or a Wood TW-555 is a killer Dyna cam. Hard to say what it would cost but the 100 kit about 1200, figure about 3 to 400 for a cam. Labor l am ball parking 2,000. Gaskets, oil etc, 300, and a dyno tune about 3 to 400. I used to feel the same way about Harleys growing up in a Kawasaki shop. One thing I learned about Harley's it's more the way they put the power to the ground, it's a completely different feel. The torque is instant and it's raw, it's not nearly as smooth as the metric bikes. It's the same feeling of a classic muscle car vs. a modern muscle car. Honestly it's really impressive the power they can produce given the firing order and the 45 degree twin cylinder design.

Im thinking about buying a ‘01 flhrc w/13,500 miles one owner. Would I be good to ride it a while before installing the hydraulic tensioner kit? Or do I take the cover off and inspect as soon as I get it home regardless? Thanks for the info I’ve learned a lot
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 4 года назад
If it were me, l would pop the cover and check it out. That inner tensioner is hard to see, you can get a peak at it with a inspection camera though. Those chain tensioners are such a dice roll as some failed so early and others went 50k. I know l would sleep better knowing where they are for wear.
@rgh622
@rgh622 4 года назад
A tip on peaking at that inside tensioner shoe. Use a dental mirror, you know the little round mirror on a stick? If you pull the shoe back and pin it in place you can use a flashlight and mirror and have a good look at the wear pattern. See here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--moAxQo7-1Q.html

You seem to know a lot about these motors... i came across a comment made by another youtuber that threw me for a loop the other day... he said (and he may just be retelling what the HD repair tech told him) that the TC motor he had (cant remember if it was an 88 or 96 but a TC motor nonetheless) failed catastrophically due to cam bearing walk and was told that the bearings could not be removed the whole crank case had to be replaced. this kinda sounded like a bold face lie to me because i've seen bearing puller tools and even watched several videos of bearings being pulled. Perhaps the tech was either conflating the fact that it couldnt be pulled bc it had already failed and needed a new crank anyways or what... but i've always known these bearings to be able to be inspected/pulled/replaced as needed. Any thoughts?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
What he said is true in a extreme case, it is possible with a cam bearing failure that it can damage the cases. If the cams walk and unseats the crank bearing they can wollar out the cases where they are pressed. A good machinist can do a lot with a set of beat up cases but by that time it would cost as much or more just to get a aftermarket set that's better than factory. The same thing can happen with the crankshaft too. It's a very rare thing to see but it has happened.
@drwombat
@drwombat 3 года назад
@@GixxerFoo gotcha so this is a unique situation and under other circumstances without cam walk, could the cams or cam bearings be inspected for run out like the crank and removed/replaced prior to catastrophic failure?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
@@drwombat Absolutely, with a cam swap it's just cheap insurance to go ahead and change those bearings out and go to a much nicer after market bearing. Bearings do fail, due to age or manufacturing defect but it's not often, they will normally last the life of the engine. Sportsters don't even use cam bearings, they have brass bushings and they last the life of the engine as well.

What would you recommend for injectors for 100 hp harley motor
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
At 100 horse you're good with the stock injectors, once you start pushing the motor up over 110 that's when it's going to be time to start looking at a bit larger injector. Too big of an injector can do more harm than good, here's a video about injector sizing that explains more ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PaiSNfnLfsc.html

@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
It's very possible with some RU-vid videos and I would highly recommend a Harley-Davidson service manual. It's got to be the one you order from the dealer, it is step by step in detail for every procedure on your motorcycle. It will even outline the exact tools you will need and the torque spec for single nut and bolt on the bike.

I have a 2006 88ci Road King and I had Andrews tw-26 cams put in it a few years ago. They are more torque cams between 1800-5500 rpm. I have a high flow kit on the carb and aftermarket Vance and Hines pipes. I would like to go with more cubic inches but don't want to get ride of these tw-26 cams. What would you recommend?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
A 95 inch upgrade with a mild compression increase would work very with those cams, you can squeeze them a bit with compression. You could get it up to around 9.8:1 compression with those cams.
