Jan Brokken wrote an intense portrait of Youri Egorov, In het huis van de dichter (In the House of the Poet), which reads as a novel but is based on real events. I had the chance of reading the italian translation (Nella casa del pianista) published by the wonderful Iperborea. I guess it hasn't been published in English yet. So highly recommended for music lovers who read in Dutch or Italian.

He should not have defected. Had he stayed in the USSR, he would not have met his partner who was indirectly caused his demise. I met Youri in Manchester back in 1980 where he was giving concerts. He was such a humble person. He would let me sit on the floor and listen to him practice.

He would have been unhappy his whole life, then.

@@НаиляЛогинова That's beautiful. But Egorov was gay, and in his biography is clearly explained how his life was being. hell when his homosexuality became somehow known. He got some threatening phone calls, and similar things.
