Joanne Poluch of Remarque Art Consulting introduces you to an exhibition featuring over 20 works by Anishinaabe artist Richard Bedwash, at the Art Gallery of Guelph.
These work were created while active in the Native Sons, founded at the Guelph Correctional Centre in 1976, initiated by Indigenous inmates.
This organization supported and affirmed the healing value of cultural and spiritual expression within a justice system, that had consistently failed them.
Profoundly shaped by the colonialism of incarceration from
experiences of residential school to his term at the correctional institution, Bedwash's vivid paintings were a reclamation of traditional knowledge.
