www.thehonestc...
Over the last couple years, I’ve had a growing feeling that teaching carpentry exclusively through RU-vid videos is not the most effective way of doing my job...So, I’m starting something new!
As of summer 2023, I’ll begin offering online video courses through my own website, thehonestcarpenter.com!
The website still needs a serious overhaul, and I’m in the process now of developing my first online video courses. BUT I know that this will be the ultimate way to teach carpentry, construction techniques, trades knowledge, tool knowledge, and even elements of contracting and building code.
RU-vid is an extraordinary platform, which contains an outrageously diverse range of topics...and it’s FREE FOR EVERYBODY. But the presence of the algorithm requires that content creators spend a lot of time thinking of ways to get videos to simply perform well.
Through my own online courses, I’ll be able to teach you carpentry in THE WAY I KNOW IT SHOULD BE TAUGHT! I can be far more thorough, and explore the appropriate topics without worrying about how the algorithm will handle them.
So, if you’ve ever REALLY wanted to learn about carpentry and construction, just hold tight. Soon you’ll have great video courses explaining everything from the bottom up, giving you total insight into how things should be done.
I’ll hope you’ll check out HONEST CARPENTER UNIVERSITY in JUNE 2023!

Great book for a beginner . ru-vid.comUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

As for the what, when, how, and show time lengths, etc are concerned, I would draw from your own building and trade experience, recalling what helped you the most-what was the most effective when it came to learning as a: DIYer, a contractor, and a YT content creator. Hoping for the best for you Ethan. *God bless.*

As a "tool chick," I'm excited about this!! You're so easy to follow and understand that I look forward to quick tips AND long tutorials on your new site. If you had an 8-hour start-to-finish table saw tutorial, for example, I'd bring my laptop out in the garage and follow along. I keep trying to get into a local table saw class but can never make it work with my schedule.
@woodrowsmith3400

A comprehensive table saw class would be killer...but, honestly? That's not why I'm here. I'm here for studs, and pony walls, and recognizing a load-bearing wall. How to frame, how to read a blueprint, how to center wall studs, how to cut rafters...you know...carpenter stuff. I am already a decent woodworker. Many carpenter tricks transfer to woodworking, and you do well in that area, Ethan. But I want 'carpenter'. Check out Steve Ramsey. It is said his Woodworking for Mere Mortals are chock full of information you need to know. I've not gone through his course, but if it is like his videos, it would be worth investigating.

Since carpentry is not my profession, I most likely would not partake in classes, but if I needed a deeper understanding of a project, then a shorter one hour might be all my schedule and brain could tolerate. This comment hit the nail on the head for me. You probably have three audiences - young people going into the trades, the Kimberly’s (and me) wanting to get basic info on how to do a project for DIY or so we don’t get screwed by a contractor, and old farts who want to learn deep and have a lot of time. I see smallish fee “short courses” and larger fee university curriculum. The latter a discount fee for bulk curriculum for the trades folks or individual fee for in depth on, say, “all things drywall” for the old fart who is confident that his wife is wrong. 😅 Love your channel.

Great idea! Your channel is one of my favorites. Longer courses are great as long as there are chapters. I’ll often want to review a particular piece of a video but don’t want to watch the entire thing over again. Chapters also help when learning about something that I don’t have a clue about because I need time to digest the first part before going on to the next.

This is what a lot of educators are moving or have moved to. Strictly being a RU-vidr means doing tons of tool reviews and selling product placement. When your audience is actually here to learn, it gets hard watching yet another "Best Tape Measure" video, when you can just buy a Stanley Powerlock, or any other other decent tape measure and go actually do something with it. Too many content creators pushing tools and not actually providing value. I've seen that happen with really good channels.

My thought process has always been toward helping people with their projects. The RU-vid algorithm was never considered. Do I reach as many people as you? No. That doesn't stop me from creating full-length tutorials or mini series. Some of my videos are an hour long, packed with all the information someone may need to complete their project. Do a couple of longer videos and see how they do. Your following is far better than mine and some of my longer videos perform very well on RU-vid. Thanks for the great content and looking forward to the next steps.

Ethan you're an experienced tradesman, but RU-vid is full of videos from experienced tradespeople, however they don't have your gift as a teacher. In my attempt to go from "never mounted a shelf" to "build my own shed" I've subscribed to a handful of great RU-vid trades channels, but none offer the depth and scope of information that you do, along with the clarity of your explanations. Attention spans are shorter these days, sadly, because topics like framing, foundations, or even door installations are pretty complex for a 15 minute video, but a series of short videos around a central skill would be great. "Basic carpentry" "Painting" "Drywall Installation and repair" "Basic plumbing and fixtures" etc. I'll definitely be signing up and I'm very grateful for your willingness to share the benefits of your knowledge and experience.

Your online courses idea is a great one! Count me in! I have already signed up and paid for the Steve Ramsey classes, and I did learn quite a bit. What I like best about it, is that once you have paid your "tuition" you have access to it for life. That is so cool. I think you should structure your classes in whatever way you are most comfortable with. I think your RU-vid audience trusts you with the way you would present the content. At least I do. What got me to watch was the title of your channel and what got me to subscribe was the content and the way you explain items. As to length, I like the longer option you suggested, but many others will not. So perhaps two tiers. As to subjects, I would like someone to do in depth teaching on each power tool-so not 15 minutes. And for absolute beginners. For instance, I am finding myself very intimidated by my router. All the videos assume a level of knowledge I just do not have. Start from the ABSOLUTE beginning and then work us into more and more complex uses. This is so exciting. Way to go. Eathan. I started my hobby of carpentry, for a particular project, using no power tools. As it progressed, I ended up learning about different aspects of the types of wood, tools, cutting, joinery etc. My only resource- back issues of Popular Mechanics ! So I suggest that your chapter could be a project, broken down into 4 to 6 videos covering the different aspects. With your own website, as the project lists grow, you can give cross reference & links to earlier videos which already covered that aspect in detail....finally creating a beautiful lattice of knowledge. Best wishes.

Great idea! And I totally agree that over the last 3 or so years RU-vid has become a bad platform for learning. The constant click bait titles are annoying and make it hard to find anything. One example is when I was having a very hard time understanding squaring. I could not find a decent video on it. Then randomly I saw your video titled "do this to your woodworking projects...". I've seen it pop up before but never clicked on it because I could not see what it was about. When I finally did watch it, I saw that it was exactly what I was looking for. But those types of titles don't tell you anything about the content. Probably also why it has such low number of views (relatively). It's frustrating that good content creators have to follow the trends of fake click bait sites.

Be sure that you place the videos on your site so that they are easy to find, whether that be by the way you organize the site or how you put tags on your videos so that a search will pull them up (your website developer should help with this). Nothing worse than not being able to find the topic that you are looking for. Be sure to let us all know, via this channel, when the new site is up-and-running so that we can bookmark it. Best of luck!

I think the learning "deeply" part comes with our own experiences. When we apply what you are teaching us in our endeavors, we learn even more! Hands on experience, with trial and error, teaches all the things you can't in video. Most people watch the video before attempting a project, so you give us the guidelines and confidence needed to get started. I appreciate all the teachers on the RU-vid platform. I have learned so much from you guys! I don't think you need to change a thing, but that's my opinion. Best wishes my friend! Enjoy the journey Post Note: I would consider taking in neighborhood teenagers and doing group projects with them if you are looking to expand your horizons a bit. Doing group projects that serve the community is a win-win for all involved 🙂

I think 1-2 hours with sections might be ideal particularly if access to the courses are permanent if paid for. This will let people go back and watch a particular section of your circular saw tips for example as a refresher if someone is working on a project that might require a skill they didn't pay too much attention to in the beginning.

What a great idea! I've noticed too many channels offer a clickbait title or thumbnail and then fail to deliver the basic content. Shorter hours. But yes, the university idea is a clever evolution of the channel.

Ethan, personally, I am very excited about your new content extension. It seems like your idea is truly based on the wanting to teach and impart knowledge. Sir, you have a loyal and highly appreciative fan base and I'm sure we all can't wait to see what coolness you deliver. This being said, I am also sincerely hoping that you don't fall off the map for easy / casual late night viewing. But, I also think that these short RU-vid videos stunt your display of knowledge. Idk ... just make the dang new HC univ. I, for one, can't wait! Good luck and all the best, man.

RU-vid only allows you tidbits of anything. Your conclusions are bang on. I'm 74 and can see your good tips especially up-to-date. I learned along my years a variety of skills: jack of all trades...master of none. But then again, I'm not concentrating on them to be a master. Shortcuts don't compensate for applied work. Much success on the courses. Cheers to you.

I can’t find the poll but if you are teaching the courses I would try either format. Topics of interest to me are: how to address walls and trim (everything from patching drywall, how walls are even put together, how to fix trim if it’s coming apart, caulk recs etc); tool usage if you really have zero idea what you are doing (like don’t understand if you always have to have a pilot hole or you can ever just drill a fastener straight in, don’t know how to know if something is drilled far enough, how to throw away and change out utility blades, such dumb stuff for people who have learned from experience but so confusing for someone who hasn’t); how to hang things from walls and ceilings (not just how to put hardware in a wall but like if you want to hang a punching bag or something heavy-what to check for and how to really do it right). I could go on. You have a unique gift for breaking down complex ideas and not presuming everyone has the same knowledge base.

Looking forward to your courses Ethan. A great format I’ve found is the one done by Home Renovision DIY, he has a whole series on RU-vid on how to do drywall. Helped me build up my room. The format is a sequence of videos all about 20m each , each covering a different topic. Together it’s a complete course.

Great idea Ethan! Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Go for it! It's going to take and be a lot of hard work for you, and fine tuning, and you have to balance family life, work life, and cyberspace life. Only you know what's best for you and your family, but I, for one, would be interested. At 63, I'm a hobby woodworker (or wood tryer!), and I've already learned a lot of what NOT to do (but still continue making mistakes, of course). You, Steve, Stumpy and Colin are my "go to" people. Good luck, take care, and above all, get the lifestyle balance right. Family first!

Congratulations on your new project! I think the idea of an online carpentry course that covers everything you need to know to build your own home is fantastic. In my opinion, it would be best to keep the videos short, ranging from 10 to 25 minutes, and organize them into easily searchable sections. Building a website and monetizing the course can be overwhelming, but you could learn from the experiences of other online course creators. One potential solution could be collaborating with another website, such as Khan Academy or other tradespeople like electricians and plumbers. Thank you for all the work you have done so far. Although I'm not currently involved in carpentry, I still enjoy your videos. Who knows, maybe one day I'll change my profession and join the trades. Best of luck with your project!

With respect to your first question, I think a section (all on one aspect of a subject) of videos (each 5-12 min) totalling 1-2 hours would be better than the 5-8 hour long ones, because the students will also be starting and stopping the videos to take notes, so its nice to be able to finish the whole section in one sitting for memory retention purposes. As for the second question about topics, I would suggest zooming out and consider the mission of your university to build a complete house from beginning to end. As you know, a house is a complex system of many other systems working together (like the foundation, walls/floor/ceilings - structure, openings - windows & doors, plumbing, septic, electrical, HVAC/forced air/ventilation, kitchens, washrooms, roofs, house exterior, etc. So wherever you don't have expertise, connecting us with courses of others who are experts in those fields on your platform would be great (collaboration of professionals). Essentially a 'one-stop-shop' in education to build a house isn't available anywhere that I see. And many of us don't want to waste our time with the 'fluff' of college and university programs. We want practical usable hands-on learning. Maybe even offer certificates.
@diyenthusiast7458
@diyenthusiast7458 Год назад
Totally see your rationale for a different solution for going into deeper and longer topics. My suggestion for course structuring: pick one “persona” at a time and develop the learning path similar to school/college (subsequent “grades” teaches more complex topics with assumption you know the previous grade’s material). In terms of personas; I imagine you can think of them as DIY’er, handyman , licensed professional etc. Looking forward to what’s to come!

I’m not a professional, but a woman who likes carpentry on an entry level as a DIYer and crafter. I have been very happy with your videos as they are for my lifestyle. It sounds like you’re proposing your version of the Master Classes offered that cost $$ to enroll. I also hear that you’ll be working even harder than you already do! Bravo! I’ve yet to see all your videos; I choose out of need and necessity and appreciate your knowledge in a timely fashion. I do not like shorts or live videos!! It’s a great idea for some, but some of us don’t have the time or funds. Whatever you do, I wish you the best. You’re the only carpenter I trust!

I like the longer format, but I'm 62, an RN. I will never become a carpenter. I'm too old However, I love carpentry. I piddle around my house, fixing and doing things. I really would like to build a gazebo or a deck. A shed would be nice, but I loose confidence framing a roof. So if the price is reasonable I'd buy some courses. Concrete is another thing that scares me. Anyway, you get the idea. Ethan, you really have a knack to teach exactly what is needed. Like a reveal, or the kurf. Both of those things had slipped right past.

Totally understandable and I honestly wish you the BEST of luck in recruiting subs for the courses. I most likely will check them out. I like your channel and content and I'm not even a carpenter nor do I have much of a wood shop - just a handful of tools and historical framing and 4H knowledge from a million years ago. You'll be doing YT content regardless as the eyeballs and potential clicks are too valuable; but hopefully you can get somebody to help rip shorts and small topical videos from your 1. old content, 2. new paid content, to drive eyeballs. Certainly can be done but I don't think it's any less work; but the potential upside is quite attractive. Excited to see what you create. Cheers

Hi There. I hope this missive finds you in good health and fine spirits. When I was in the armed forces, way back when, I was informed that 40 minutes was the right length of time for a lesson. Five (5) minutes to get settled in, thirty (30) minutes to learn and five (5) minutes knowing its nearly fag break. Not that I smoke. This could be done with a slight over lap, giving some repeated subject to the Prior lesson. It worked well for me. I must admit, I make more sawdust than anything but love having a go! Please keep up the good work, yours from an old UK grunt. Wayne Gammon.

First, let me wish you the best of luck in this new direction! I hope it is immensely successful for you and your audience. That said, that's not really the kind of content that I'm looking for from you. I'm not a carpenter or a tradesman of any sort, and I'm not looking to become one. I'm a retired technical writer and editor who likes to think that I can do some DIY things around the house. But even if I don't actually *do* many of the things I've learned from you, I very much enjoy learning about them. I like understanding how things work. That was my favorite aspect of technical writing: I got to learn all kinds of cool things. So I appreciate your promise to keep making RU-vid videos, and I will certainly keep watching them.

Your channel is awesome and super helpful for the handful of your videos that I've had a chance to learn from. I like your idea of offering courses to be able to more comprehensively cover topics as lessons. I think you should not limit yourself to one or the other time windows and rather pursue both depending on the time requirements of the specific topic. I'd love to see a video or course on (No bracket) angle calculation for junctions in specific, but all cuts on wood frame geodesic domes.
