Mary Chapin Carpenter was probably the only reason I ever started listening to country. Imagine someone intelligent with incredible writing ability and drive in country music! My father was into country music, the bar and booze and cheating and truck driving... his life was a cheap country song. Last saw him at my brother's wedding; he died to me long before he passed. It took someone really special to make me notice a change in country: that is MCC.
Here's one country-loving man with goose bumps. The amount of talent that just kept washing up like waves on a beach. The collective stories could fill shelves upon shelves.
I don't cry easy these days, but I almost lost it when Tammy came on stage. God bless you Mary Chapin Carpenter for this beautiful video and the words the song say it all. You are the best!!!
WOW!! It's flippin 2020 and I have never seen this!! I remember very fondly the "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" ensemble but I've never seen this! Absolutely phennominal!! ..... I wonder if Barbara Mandrell was in that crowd. WHAT a treat! So awesome of MCC to do this! I feel lucky! ;)
Well, Alison MacKenzie of the Cheers, Family Ties and Fletch fame who dubbed Patsy Cline since June 15, 1975 has signed a deal with Universal Music (Angel Records, Geffen Records, Mercury Nashville) with the expection of its unsuccessful album from Fall 1980 with overdubbed songs of the 1960's versions were not doing very well at all was "Always: Patsy Cline." She really rocked here in New York City - audiences and fans were praised with her lovely contributions here.
We start off with the song "The Hard Way." So we're already at awesome. Then we have Wynonna and Kathy Mattea join in. Patty, Suzy, Michelle, Pam, Trisha, Emmylou. Tammy Wynette?? We're officially at dumbfounded. Now a tidal wave of legendary singers all taking a bow for their achievements. Every ingredient of this video is wonderful, but none more so than the fact that everything these ladies got, they indeed got the hard way. Imagine 50+ women writing the same autobiography - that's what we've got here. I defy anyone not to be inspired by this.
This brings me to tears every. single. time. So many incredible women. Talk about strength, beauty and empowerment! and the look on those little girl faces in the audience....
Talk about making an entrance, when all the ladies on stage take a step down and the legends walk in, what a show stopper. I couldn't name half of them, but I knew how big and important they all were by audience reaction. I wish I could find this DVD.
Oh this made me cry seeing all these wonderful ladies together singing. Thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter for bringing them together! I grew up with all of them 💙
I had the privlege of meeting Chapin backstage once - she was just as warm and genuine as could be. I've watched this vid dozens of times, shared it and loved it. As an old radio guy - I can well appreciate the lyrics and the incredible effort it took to get (figuartively speaking) these grand old dames in the same place at the same time to sing a song they've all lived right along with their sisters everywhere, no matter what their occupation is. Brava Chapin and all the women on that stage!
This video gives me chills and proves that Mary Chapin was respected in the country community for her writing abilities and the power in her voice and her lyrics. I lived 90's country and like older country as well, so I can name many of the women in this video, though I don't claim to know them all.
I love Mary Chapin Carpenter. Both she and Emmylou Harris are unrivaled in terms of the feeling and emotion they give in every song. What an incredible array of talented and gifted performers on stage at the same time.
The women of country music are the super stars. Your songs stir the heart, make me think , motivates me to do better, gets me to really listen and makes me want to love you, protect you, provide for you, and be loyal to you no matter what. You ladies are the best thing about country music.
Everything we got, we got the hard way - the anthem of women from time immemorial. What a joy to watch and hear these marvelous women sing one of Mary Chapin carpenter’s best songs.
Just recently re-discovered MCC after loving her as a teenager. This was always my favorite of her songs and I never saw this special. What an awesome group of women!
Rarely will one find this much talent in one place at one time, and the song fits; Nashville has normally been a man's town and all of these women have had to succeed in that atmosphere. They got it the hard way, and we're the better for it. Thanks, Chapin. This, I think, is from the CMT "Women of Country" show from the early 90's.
I don't remember seeing this video before but seeing Kitty Wells brings back memories of meeting her and how she and the others helped pave the way for all the wonderful women in country music today.
I have lost count the amount of times i have seen this video ! Having been to four concerts in the UK my dream is to see her at Wolftrap on the lawn....i love her music and her values stand for so much that lacks in society today ! She is an inspiration not just to women but to all of us, and this video epitimises just what a star she is. From the very young Trisha Yearwood and Pam Tillis to the great and late Tammy Wynette such an amazing host of stars !
Well I just love every single one of these ladies they are awesome singers and they give us a lot to be happy about I'm always happy when I sing along with them keep up the good work ladies country forever
i never saw this video before, im astonished by all the talent here. Basically youre seeing the who's who in female CW music and they ALL got it the hard way. God bless you all and what good remains of America. It aint much!
This was an amazing performance, not about Country in Nashville, but because of the talent that graced the stage--not an easy way did they get into this field and have a career. They share many a character traits no doubt - drive, strength, courage, "inspiration" and "spark", but for sure these women came by their careers the "Hard Way". Wonderful befitting song that is timeless!! So glad kbman44 captured what we watched years ago. Thank you for such.
Such a powerful spark of inspiration. As a woman, like so many, single mom, but pushing through, went back to school, looking for work, nurturing my family. This song seriously speaks to me. When women come together, all the pain and struggles..but make something out of it all, nothing is a force like women coming together this way. Fantastic message, unbelievable harmony, you can just feel the soul they put into this.
Mary Chapin Carpenter, Wynonna, Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless, Suzy Boggess, Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood, Emmylous Harris, Tammy Wynette. I believe the one with very short dark hair is Michelle Wirght. Does anyone know if that is correct?
I think this is from the CBS TV Special "The Women of Country" from 1993. The full cast is listed if you google it (RU-vid won't let me post the link).
3:49 the biggest talent on the stage gets 3 seconds in the background and is smiling and happy for it...but we didnt know all Martina McBride had at the time. She has done so much since then.
@ariadne2956 Kentucky's own Patty Loveless. And if anyone does not have this cd (especially the ladies), it is seriously and without exaggeration one of the two or three cd's I would take if I could only have a handul. It is insightful and moving and entertaining. I was yojng when this came out, but I miss the 90s for country music.
