We learned last week that Mary Chapin's live Wolfe Trap album of last year, 2020 released this year -- "One Night Lonely"-- has been nominated for Best Album of 2021. This is wonderful to see and so well deserved!!! 👏 👏 💜 🇨🇦 🍁
Nearly 30 years ago, can you imagine that! Each one on this stage such gifts to the music 🌎 and much more. From Pete Kennedys, Mary Chapin Carpenter's temporary guitar player, Ms Carpenter herself, the late Nanci Griffith and the Indigo Girls. What decent human beings too. An evening to remember for 👍!!!
My favorite recording ever was this episode of Austin City Limits. If you think about it, this was a gathering that makes you believe in the circles in the pond effects of life. This was Pete Kennedy’s last date with Mary Chapin while John Jennings was in the studio. Nanci Griffith had just lost her guitar player and asked Pete to be in the Blue Moon Orchestra because of hearing him on this show, which later led to Maura Kennedy (The Kennedys) being asked to sing with the band also. If these musicians fascinate you, you should read Pete Kennedy’s book, which includes Mary Chapin’s early days in DC.
Such a talented singer songwriter. Two of the most amazing performers ever when it comes to their mastery of the guitar: Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Denver. Could listen to them play the guitar for hours. MCC is the Reigning Queen of Country Folk Music.
What a great song and beautiful lady I forgot how much this song always struck a deep cord in me. I feel her pain and I'm a guy. That's what a great songwriter and singer does for you!
@@tonyz6421 many in UK in same class, both male and female , Jez Lowe just played an amazing solo gig at wessex-acoustic. a case of Mary is something special
How time does fly and the things that stick out in your mind. It has about 40 years and remember listening to Mary Chapin Carpenter on my tape as I would drive to work. I was in Dallas and thought I would never see this long.....Love your singing!!!
Man, hairstyles were so fabulous in the early 90s. She's positively radiant in this performance. Achingly beautiful song... what the hell was that guy thinking?
I was just thinking about how much I like MCC's hair. Its beautiful. She must have a lot of hair, it looks so thick. I love this song. Tried to play along, can't get the strumming right though.
Only just found this, having loved MCC since being put onto her by the manager of the Smashing Pumpkins whilst on holiday in Barbados in ‘95! Beautiful in every way-what a gift she is, a shining light in the darkest of times. Thanks so much for posting.
it is pete kenndy on guitar in the background james hooker on keyboards peter gloarish on cello and pat mcgulthy on drums, congas. this is from 1992 austin city limits so i wanted to clear that up who is in the band
Ok i think this was the moment I fell into a crush with her that has never ended. I watched this show when it aired and havent seen it since until today. It was called something like "Singers and Songwriters Special" and ALL were amazing. Thats Nancy Griffith sitting next to her, then Indigo Girls. See if you can find the whole show. Fantastic.
I believe that is the terrific guitarist, Pete Kennedy playing on the left. He toured with both Mary Chapin Carpenter and Nanci Griffith. Love both of those ladies.
I recognize your name from the Kennedys UTube shows. It is, and he is also on her Down at the Twist and Shout video, near the back of the stage and to your left as you watch the video. I went to see Pete and Maura the first time they came to my town after seeing him play with Mary Chapin. I got to see Nanci Griffith also, but it was before Pete and Maura were in her band.
I always loved Mary back n the old days I would listen though all these country songs for hours just 2 hear her on a ghetto blaster it's not like these days where u Google it.
OMG, with Nanci Griffith singing harmony! I am so glad this just showed up on my sidebar, otherwise I would never have heard it. And the Indigo Girls waiting to play too.
No one's got to tell me it's over I could see it from miles away No one's got to tell me what I don't already know today No one's got to tell me they've seen you On the town with an old girlfriend No one's got to tell me You look like you've fallen in love again 'Cause you're out of my life now With a wave of her hand You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad Now you can do what you want to And never feel sad You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad No one's got to tell me the difference Between me and the one who's returned No one's got to tell me You never really got over her No one's got to tell me they've seen you Looking like a brand new man No one's got to tell me You look like you've fallen in love again 'Cause you're out of my life now With a wave of her hand You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad Now you can do what you want to And never feel sad You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad So you just go where you go And do what you do And be who you want to be But when she burns you again And your phone doesn't ring Baby it's me 'Cause you're out of my life now With a wave of her hand You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad Now you can do what you want to And never feel sad You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad You never had it so good babe I never had it so bad You never had it so good, babe I never had it so bad
Not sure, but I believe the red-headed guitar player may be Mr Pete Kennedy who would go on to tour with Ms Nanci Griffith. Pete was filling in for Mr. John Jennings at the time who was also producing Ms Carpenter. Their is so much talent and good human folk sitting in this round at this particular Austin City Limits. Not sure if it would be six degrees of separation from Ms Griffith or Mary Chapin Carpenter, but Nanci had about 5 yrs on her in age, but they came up in the business right around 14 and 16/18yrs of age respectively. They both had this perfection about them, consummate performers always traveling the world over on tours, and so many causes they supported. Past tense this week I am sad to say for Ms Griffith. The world lost another treasure this Aug. 13, '21. We really do need to celebrate the life and work of Ms Carpenter for sure some 4 decades out and counting still thankfully. Thank you Ken Kimbrough for ensuring these videos are around. This one is for the hx books. I am sure Mary Chapin would agree this weekend and for all time.
Pete Kennedy playing a guitar just given to him by Nanci as his was giving him some grief. And subsequently played guitar with Nanci for many years. Love them all.
MCC is so under- rated and this song blows away the crap that country is today!!! 50,000 views is a joke but no surprise as real talent is never recognized.
Saw you in Northern Wisconsin in 2018, you’re younger in this video but your eyes and smile haven’t aged one little bit. You’ll be back up there this July 14 and I’ll be there if I can figure out a way
"...when your phone doesn't ring, it's me." Who comes up with that stuff? Great! Also, it's great to see Mary smile. I bet she can really light up the joint when she wants to.
well damn what a remarkable piece of musical history and such high quality...mary & nanci - how is it possible that these two beautiful talented women never found a deep true lasting love..??
