The PC EngineCD/TurbografxCD was an amazing machine for its time (1989), the game supported redbook audio, and HudsonSoft, the dev who made the PCEngine version of Ys2 took full advantage of that by having full soundtrack audio that included live instruments and making the main cutscenes in the series fully voice acted, not even any text boxes. Character portraits would simply appear on the screen and they would talk to you. Heavily suggest listening to the PC-Engine version of "Palace", and imagine hearing that coming out of your TV at a time where the biggest console was the NES

Termination is the final boss music for YS 2, the first one was from the Japanese PC-88, the very first release of the game in 1988. In 1989 the Pc-Engine, the Turbografx-16 in the US, got a CD-ROM add on and Ys 1 and 2 came out for it as an enhanced compilation. That was the second arrangement you heard, that version of the game was the one that introduced many in the US to Ys and Falcom's general sound. The last version of the track was for Ys Zanmai, one of many many MANY Falcom arrangement albums. It was done by the Falcom/JDK Band, Falcom's in house band, that has also been around in various forms since the 1980s. Most of the tracks from the first two games are considered iconic. Yuzo (with Meiko Ishikawa and Hideya Nagata in Ys 2) really came into his own I feel with these games, and soon after that he was working with other companies too.

I think the coolest thing about Ys 1/2's OST is that with each re-release of them you basically see both the evolution of Falcom Sound Team JDK/JDK Band over the years as well as the evolution of rock and its sound over the last few decades. It's one of my favorite OSTs in gaming and I love how much you're clearly enjoying listening to them!

Ys is such a good series that is criminally under appreciated. Also you can probably find like 20 versions of most of the Ys 1 and 2 OST because they've had a massive amount of ports and cover albums over the years lol.

Thanks for doing some Ys I and II. These are in fact by far my favorite osts of the franchise, and they both deserve a full video for the whole ost honestly. Hopefully you do that some day. Can you believe that this was basically made in the late 80s for a jrpg with all the limitations of the consoles at the time in terms of packaging and how much sound they can fill in? I mean damn. Utterly mind-blowing. Falcom at their peak indeed. Cheers.

Ys Origin is a prequel taking place quite a bit in the past of Ys 1 and 2. They reused a lot of Ys 1 and 2 music for it, although re-arranged.

Every last song that Ryo Yonemitsu has arranged for the PC-Engine Ys games has turned out absolutely phenomenal. He simply can’t make a bad arrange.

The classic vgm sound that's always nice to hear, good intensity and the bass is dope. I like that the lead instrument sounds haunting. I very much like this version. Those drums sound crystal clear, the orchestral hit sounds great and the synth is tasty. I hear some organ in here and it works well for this song, quite a head banger. That first guitar solo sounds super dirty, I like it. Dope ending too. Next one creates a bit of an atmosphere, like it's a tragic scene then the intensity kicks in like a protagonist having that moment where a fire of passion is shown in their eyes. This one goes super hard, the string lead is gorgeous. It sounds like there might be a harpsichord in the background, this was awesome and I very much enjoyed it. I will be listening to all these videos but I'll be making less comments due to life getting busy again with work.

Man it really is a banger, in my top 20 Ys tracks for sure, whenever I hear it I get pumped up to the max, I feel like I can do anything. Ys at least the early ones are solo 2d top down ish Action JRPG's, the first one utilising the unique bump combat system, wherein you have to run into enemies constantly to kill them. Its tricky at first but incredibly rewarding when you master it. But yh as I said they are action games so they are fairly challenging for newcomers. The newer ones slowly became more traditional action RPGS and from Seven onwards they incorporated a party system. The hardest game I played in the series was Ys Oath in Felghana, you actually listened to a track from that game called Valestein Castle which I think was the first Ys track you ever listened to, that ones also a banger lol. So yeah they are hype action games so the metal definitely fits, Ys is full of that, if you like action RPGS and sick heavy metal music, Ys games are some of the best games you can play. (sorry bout my rant lol)

Technically Ys 1 and 2 were supposed to be a single game but it was too large to fit on nintendo carts back in the day so it was split into 2
@muffinboymcgee7411

Not Nintendo carts; floppy disks. Ys originally came out on home computers like the NEC PC-88 and Sharp X1; the Famicom/NES versions are ports (and bad ones at that.)

Something to keep in mind to keep your sanity while reacting to Ys games: Ys 1 and 2 have literally been ported to as many things as the original Doom. There are SO many versions of ALL of these songs that's it's not even funny. As an aside, Ys 3 is the best game in the series, and needs more of your reactions ^.~ "Be Careful" is my top pick for that one
