I enjoyed Ys VIII so much (just finished it a few weeks ago) that when I saw Ys IX is releasing soon, I immediately ordered a copy lmao. Seeing all the issues about unstable framerates etc. does have me worried... so I really hope the patches fix those well. I truly want to love this game as much as I did Ys VIII.
Ooh good to know! I picked up Ys VIII on switch after watching your videos and I’ve been LOVING it. I’ve been excited to move onto IX but now I’ll be careful about which version I pick up. I adore the warning though, it would have been heartbreaking to go in unprepared and be disappointed by such an incredible series when they might fix it soon. Thanks again for the fantastic content!

I absolutely love Ys IX (perhaps slightly more than Ys VIII but it's a very difficult comparison, with VIII having the massive advantage that is Dana Iclucia) but a couple of attempts at the Ys IX demo made me realize that Switch wasn't going to cut it for me. It felt borderline painful to play. Though a Pro controller might have made things a bit better. (I don't own one of those) In contrast, I pick Switch for Trails every time possible. Cold Steel IV earlier this year was a lot of fun while comfortably lying in bed. I believe turn based combat in general works very well on this platform, but fast paced real time, not so much.
Agreed. I actually bought IX for Switch, having played and loved VIII on there (still my favourite game I've played on Switch), but after a few hours had had enough and, ahem, switched to playing it on PC, and never looked back. Like you, I like it just as much if not more than VIII (which I think is down to the characters and especially the traversal). On the other hand, all the Trails games I've played so far (Sky trilogy, CS I and II, Zero, and currently nearing the end of Azure) have been on PC, but I'm thinking of played CS III and IV on Switch as playing them on portable might help me to get through them faster.
Hmmm, well. I'll keep hoping. I will say however that I am very much impressed by the file size for Ys IX. I'll probably end up playing the PC version first, but I'm still gonna end up playing the switch version at some point down the line should the updates improve things!
No problem, we'll just wait for the Switch Pro to get some halfway decent framerates. Oh.. wait... I really liked Ys IX but it has some serious pacing issues.
Buying this game as physical version on PS4 is sort of like an early support and for collection. I got it on PC now and playing with KB&M is better in long sessions for me.
I got Ys VIII on my Switch and Ys IX on my PS4 (now PS5). I've debated several times getting one or the other on one system, but can't make up my mind on which. Oh, or I could get both on PC. *sigh* decisions decisions.
So is frame rate really the only issue? If so I don't expect to be particularly bothered by it outside of battles in the city. I'm mainly asking because the port of CSIV has an issue where trial chests don't display info that's annoying to deal with.
Just played the Steam demo.... Hmmmm, that camera sure is in a no brake, full peddle mode. I would love to buy it on release for pc, but we might have a new porting issue with 9.
I was told a launch patch was happening, but to my knowledge that has yet to go live 🙃 I think the patches are just based on stability, not visuals unfortunately
I think some context that people will miss, is even on PS4 now the game is in a much better state than it was at launch. From what it sounds like, Ys IX at launch on Switch seems only a little worse than IX's performance @ JP PS4 launch.
I heard a few people bring that up when the embargo lifted. I didn't play it in that state, but I imagine even that was more bearable then this. I'm hoping this patch can at least keep the minimum framerate above 20 lmao, and ideally enough optimization could happen to get us really close to a constant 30, but I'm doubtful
I would argue that Ys raids are _never_ fun, no matter the frame rate. ... ... ... (I've never played any of these games - I'm just here to fulfill the prophecy.)
