Wondered the other night how Ysaÿe's dark Violin Sonata No. 1 would turn out on the viola, hence this experiment.
This the first movement, Grave.

This is an old Brescian viola which was on short term loan to him. It is now on long term loan to a violist in the Montreal Symphony.

This viola is a very beautiful instrument, I love especially the varnish . Would you tell us who the violinmaker is and what instrument you play? The Ysaye sounded very interesting played on it. I always had the concept in mind of the viola being like a bigger violin, but actually I now think it’s more like a smaller cello. Also thank you very much for uploading so regularly and for the exceptional quality of your videos.

It's.. mysterious.. dissonant but haunting and spooky, and beautiful in a sense..

I bet Ysaye 5 would sound spectacular on the viola, especially the first movement!

Bravo, in every way. Except perhaps the matching of dark tone with dodgy lighting... But really mate, sublimely beautiful playing, as ever. In awe.

That was awesome. Extremely impressive. I think it works quite well on viola. Dark and rich.

I'm not complaining yet....although you'll never hear me complain about viola-playing with good intonation. (No hidden viola joke anywhere in there.)

Please Kerson, who made this viola and do you own it or is it just on loan? I am a retired profession violist and have studied with some of the greatest musician and violists. Primrose could always tell when a violinist played the viola. Their right arm was generally too high as most violinist play that way. Proper right arm position on the viola should be lower and closer in to the body. I would greatly love to communicate with you if you are ever interested! -- Ken

The viola is such a wonderful instrument that it's a shame to miss out on all the music written for it. In the end, I understand that people have their own taste in music

Listen to it on cello then come back to this hahah. The cello version is a REAL struggle... but at least you can hear voices here...

@@moayadalwasti4746 i love viola, but as a violinist I have scrutinized little in the music for this one. It would be useful if you recommend some pieces :D

As a violinist I can tell you that you don't play violin with your arms and fingers only. You utilize your whole body in order to produce a better sound and help your body stay relaxed. Try staying still for 20 minutes with your arms raised. And than try swaying for 20 minutes with your arms raised. You will notice that swaying with arms raised will keep you much more relaxed. I'm not saying that it is easy but I'm saying that it's easier.
