Just FYI, Opium is LISTED on their Global and French sites, however I contacted their headquarters directly and was informed that it IS indeed discontinued. They simply haven't bothered to take it down off the site yet.
It was one of the first that I. Ought. Sadly changed over the years! These are still available on the U.K. website. I’m awaiting a bottle of Opium which will arrive tomorrow (hopefully!).
I just bought Kouros white here in USA from an online store in NY....1.7 oz bottle for $54....and it smells fantastic,...(just finished 2 old bottles bought 8 years here in Seattle at Perfumania) !
Have lots of vintage Kouros and YSL Pour Homme. Classic, timeless fragrances I will never forget. I personally wouldn't care if they discontinued them now because you'd have to have bought bottles in the 80s to mid 90s to know what the real quality was like. Vintage Kouros has the sort of power and authority you'd nowadays only get with a high end Xerjoff.
Rive Gauche having been discontinued is a real tragedy. Not a head turning fragrance but one of those fragrances you wear for yourself and if people do notice it on you would just be thought of as clean / classic. But I can see why it’s gone the way of the Dodo with the blue craze and Oud /vanilla that is so popular. I read the tea leaves and have two glass bottles and two tin cans. I’d say Dua makes a better rendition of it as it is an extrait and Milano Cento is very satisfying as well. Going to consider opium and or jazz in my next pick up.
I've been buying up Opium pour homme EdT bottles where I can. It was the scent of my 20s along with Fahrenheit. Opium is so beautiful, people say it's dated, I don't think it's as dated as many of that era. Boucheron Jaipur EdP reminds me of a less fruity version. That oriental spice with fruit made Opium so seductive.
When I was 12 in 2003 I loved ANY of the true YSL scents , especially Rive Gauche ❤️ And my first signature scent was Live Jazz, the most unique summer scent I’ve ever smelled. YSL used to create scents for every occasion without losing their refinement. Now , oh boy … I wanna cry 😢
Sad day for Kouros fans. 😢. I’m trying to talk my wife into buying a back up for Xmas. Do you know if the original Givenchy gentleman from 74 is discontinued? That’s one of my favorites too.
I own a modern Kouros bottle (plan on gettin a vintage one, dont worry) and I barely wear it because it doesnt suit me. Still, Imma have to get another one soon enough because I cant see myself not owning Kouros till I die. Fear of missing Kouros is the new FOMO
I have Opium pour homme edp,, and really like it. However, it's super potent. A short single spray is all that's really wearable if you don't want to choke out everyone around you. I may pick up the edt to see if it's a little less nuclear
Thanks for the video. Kouros is one of my daily scents and I'm lucky to be living in Europe, meaning it is available in stores. I just ordered a bottle of Jazz. My favourite is Polo green from Ralph Lauren & Fahrenheit from CD. But something has changed with Polo green over the years.
I bought YSL Kouros from the airport, they destroyed the perfume with the current reformulation, there is no longer any trace of the animalic scent that distinguished this perfume. If you owned this perfume 5-10 years ago, do not buy this reformulation, you will be very disappointed.
I brought a bottle of ysl kouros a week ago here in the UK its still on pretty much all UK websites for roughly £45 and it still smells how i remember it i first tried it in my early 20s and I'm 48 now i still really like it
Personally, so very, very tired of these amazing Labels becoming watered down, reformulated, or discontinued by Wal-Mart-ish conglomerated idiots who screw up established masterpieces!!! All my favorites have been discontinued for no good reason examples: Relax by Davidoff, Tenere by Paco Rabanne, the original Tom Ford designed brown bottle Of M7 by Yves Saint Laurent, Obsession's awful reformulation, awful reformulation of Jules by Dior, Voyageur by Jean Patou, and horrible reformulation of Armani Pour Homme.
Bought this year vintage Rive Gauche in a metallic bottle (batch - year of release), full 125 ml for 63$ The man said that his bottle just stands on the shelf and he doesn't use it…
Just bought a bottle of kouros at fragrance outlet in the Ontario Mills Mall .I saw it at Macy's about 6 months ago and my response was "WOW They still have KOUROS at MACY'S" I went back to by a bottle since I haven't worn or smelled it since I ran out of it in 2001 and it was gone the person behind the counter said Macy's was nolonger carrying Kouros. So I went on my Quest to find it and I found a bottle a the Ontario Mills Mall 3 weeks ago LUCKY ME I BOUGHT THERE LAST BOTTLE. Thanks Sébastien for the breaking news -that is why I subscribed to your channel to stay informed of the FRAGRANCE WORLD and your AWESOME REVIEWS. Now you have sent me on a new Quest for YSL😇🤣🤣🤣
I am really upset. Opium , Kouros were my one & only perfume brands...I did not find any thing closer to the same fragrance. please help me if you know any other brand that has the same smell of Opium pour homme... YSL has really put the men really down.
Hi Sebastian, so great if somewhat sad video. Carnation, used a lot in the past is rare nowadays because of the restriction on eugenol, contained in cloves as you rightly said. Many iconic Caron fragrances featuring this note have thus disappeared, Poivre, Coup de Fouet and Bellodgia.
YSL used to release some amazing fragrances. What they are releasing today seem uninspired and neutered. Kouros, M7, Rive Gauche, and LNDL, I hold near and dear to my heart and will always have a bottle!
Great vid, Sebastian! Although I think YSL Body Kouros had a different original bottle (part of the glass protruding from under the bottle). Would look like the main display pic in Kouros Body's fragrantica profile.
As far as I know there's 3 versions of M7 since 2011, I'm not sure if they are 3 different formulations but people treat them as differently on the various fragrance forums, the Black label M7 was the first, then the clear bottle with OUD absolu stamped on the bottle, and the last as currently listed on the YSL French website is the clear bottle without OUD absolu stamping. Researching the M7 is confusing due to the evolving branding.
@Bookie Rourke, you are absolutely correct. I bought a 2021 batch M7 and I was also looking for M7 Oud Absolute thinking it was a different product. I later realized that it was reformulated twice after the original one was released. The M7 OUD ABSOLU was the first reformulation and then they reformulated again and named it M7 which they are still producing.
Opium Pour Homme I got it. it's the smell of the 90s. EDT for the fall. EDP for the winter. Everything a man needs. I got M7 too. My daily Parfume in the fall. Great smell.
RG two bottles bought in 2018-2019, once I realized it was discontinued - I literally checked every small perfume store and drugstore across the city I live. Found also a 3rd one and passed it to an esteemed friend. I was wearing M7 the original right from the moment it launched - the first bottle I bought was 50ml - don’t remember if I got another 50ml before I bought a 100ml bottle that I probably got in 2003 and straight away I parked it away because I discovered RG that had just come out and followed me until 2019!😀 That 100ml M7 bottle was lying in a cupboard in the original box at my parents house and even though I always checked its whereabouts I never touched it until this fall that I made the decision to carry it with me at my place and I wear it every now and then. I remember back in the day I had mid-long hair and I sprayed twice on the sides of my back neck and it lasted and lasted - I would put my fingers through the hair and I would get a waft! Girls loved it at the time! Those were the old days!
I managed to get YSL Opium EDT and EDP here in Germany last year. In fact I still saw some EDP bottles in Galeria Kaufhof stores in Cologne late last year. They have similarities but the EDT is kind of lighter/brighter while the EDP to me is sweeter/fruitier, and more ambery. I almost seem to get some boozy/licorish aspect from the EDP. Just saw that the EDT is indeed still in the French website, but it appears Out of stock actually :( Rive Gauche is one fragrance I have never smelled, pain point. I wonder what's wrong with clone houses not putting out their versions. Dua has one, haven't smelled it, but for me it's really not a clone price, specially with shipping to EU
Just bought the most recent M7 from an online auction here in Switzerland 🇨🇭 last month for 42 dollars To me its very labdanum centric with a touch of oud. Not loud or beast mode. Very wearable in most situations and very smooth. Fantastic in the cold 🥶 👏. No one I know had ever heard of it. But my friends are not frag heads like us.
Body Kouros had another different bottle version than the one in your video, so it's not the first bottle edition ever made... Nice video. Unfortunately, the end of many vintage YSL creations...
With the exception of Rive Gauche and Pour Homme, all the others are still fairly easy to find is most retailers and online discounters in Portugal/Europe.
I bought last year my second bottle La Collection JAZZ and it was heavily watered down...Rive Gauche, you can find a good clone by the name of River Fougère by Dua Fragrances.. They have made a clone from Antaeus too, named Blast from the Past ... YSL Pour Homme is (by now) not listed anymore on the French website... They should have kept their classics, instead of making a dozen flankers of YSL La Nuit de l'Homme....But that is als the case in other perfume houses....sad, so sad...
I've got all of these except for Body Kouros, which sounds really interesting to me actually although I've seen some lukewarm sort of reviews of it. It seems to be pretty well regarded overall though, I think I'll have to get it before it starts becoming ridiculously overpriced. I think it's always gone from being around $30 to now being about $60 on discounters so it must be discontinued.
This must be something that the conglomerates decided to do to create thousands of concentration flankers of each fragrance. Like EXTREME INTENSE PARFUM?
Women also buy men's perfumes not so with their lady versions. One reason men's frags disappear very fast from counters. These are great frags from ysl. Will stock on most of thesel. Thanks
I was very lucky to order a bottle of Opium pour homme EDP from The Fragrance Vault up in Tahoe. If you're interested, I think they have another one available but it's 95% full and the price was hiked up. Otherwise, you're always welcome to check out the bottle I have. Opium is very sentimental for me as it was my second signature scent as a young man. It's gonna be rough when it's completely out of circulation.
Opium Pour Homme is gone from Australia, I have about 1/3 of a bottle left. Are there any good alternatives? This has been my scent for nearly 20 years, and it's now almost impossible to get, I'll have to grab another bottle from eBay before its gone.
@@ThePerfumeGuy I know right? It's so easy to forget to just enjoy it in the air. Ps, just saw a review of Miyake's new Bois Arctic and heard that it may be everything that Polo Cologne Intense wasn't? Can't wait to get your take on it Sebastian.
Opium was one of my favorite colognes. I have two bottles but it’s so watered down now that it’s unrecognizable. Thank you for the tip that penhaligons has something similar 🙌
Why would anyone buy the watered down current version of Kouros for Backup Bottles when there is "Milton Llyod The Man Silver" which is as good as the vintage Kouros formulation.
I agree with Beau de Jour being a decent alternative to Rive Gauche but I'm smelling M7 and Oud Wood side by side right now and I'm not getting that comparison AT ALL...
@@tenore8 no problem to have a different opinion but to me it's not true there is nothing in common. At the very least they are both a very westernized and wearable oud. I don't know about original formulations, but with the latest version of each, to me they are related.
@@uleertelIt's not about opinion. They are objectively VERY different... One is Mandarin-forward and resinous, the other very dry and woody. They share almost no notes and so it isn't really good advice to offer one as an alternative to the other (which was your original comment) They both contain a (questionable) amount of Agarwood and Tom Ford happened to briefly be at YSL when the precursor to M7 Oud Absolu came out. Those are the ONLY connections. Someone lazily made the same assertion as you on Fragrantica in the "Reminds me of" section and the connection has a heavy "Dislike" ratio - so we can let people decide for themselves based on that. 🤷🏻♂️
Original m7 had real oud wood , and launched the oud hype in Europe although too early to get the success it decerved. I can tell you that woman raved about this frangrance on men! The sexual attraction was unreal. Plus the ad was a shocker ;)
I know human kind don't deserve Opium pour Homme, yet I don't want to live in a timeline where its smell moves through the air of the memory desert. TT
To me Rive Gauche Pour Homme is not very much like MMM Replica At the Barbers. At the Barbers has that metallic accord I don't particularly like. Really, Rive Gauche Pour Homme is more like Avon Wild Country in scent profile, and is even pushing towards classic Old Spice despite the latter being classified as a Spicy Oriental/Amber rather than an Aromatic Fougere.
I have never smelled Rive Gauche but have a sample of At the Barber's. It does not compell me at all. After seeing online that Fine Accoutrements had a sort of clone of Rive Gauche called "American Blend", I got it, and I like that more than the Margiela. So I'm pretty sure most likely I would have loved Rive Gauche.
