I always enjoy watching your guests knitting in a beautiful landscape. Maybe I it's because the landscape and the nature means something to them. That makes it special. Shona looks so happy in her adventurous spot on the cliffs. Thank you for your sharing these gems with us.

I am Norwegian and I do what you call Continental knitting, and I hold the finger close to the knitting, just as you do. When I taught my four kids to knit when they were small, I made a little tale out of it. The right needle being the prince, the stitch over the left needle the cave, the yarn over my left index finger the princess. The prince had to go into the cave, grab the princess and take her out before the troll came :-) It worked every time. Now my oldest grandson is 3 1/2 and I cannot wait to teach him knitting.......in a couple of years :-)

Continental knitting with index finger against the needle & Norwegian purling solves a lot of the hand & finger movement that eventually ends up in pain. I am a bodyworker & have spent a bunch of time working on solving this problem, a repetitive use injury, before it happens. I think this combo solves the problem. This as well as keeping your shoulders & arms & neck relaxed...

I taught myself to knit 54 years ago when I was 12 with a Knitting for Barbie kit and knit exactly the way you do. I even hold my yarn and use my thumb exactly like you do. I also have had some arm issues in the last couple of years. If I'm knitting the stockinette stitch, I now do the purl side with the Middle Eastern Combination method. This twists the stitch so I have to knit through the back loop on the knit side. This gives my left arm a break and doesn't affect my gauge.
@NinaKeilin
@NinaKeilin 7 лет назад
I love this. My first projects were also Barbie outfits. About same time, and I was 8. I learned continental style from my mother. She's of Eastern European background. I don't hold the fingers so close to the needle. Continental style really makes ribbing easy, and in general, I think it's fast and efficient.

Gosh its been 4 years since I first saw this, I am watching it again in 2021. I have finally gotten around to knitting one of her designs. I knit Rose Red it is a hat mostly in lace with a bit of cables and you really can see how she has the knitter in mind when she designs, it is both interesting but easy to follow and it is so beautiful. If you haven't knit one of Ysolda's designs I highly recommend it. You are in for a treat. Also isn't Andrea great with her interviewing skills you can see all the times she's put into it.

I started out my knitting life as an Eastern Continental knitter. (left leg forward mounting) I don't move my finger at all to purl vs knit. I catch the yarn counter clockwise and then off. The also has the added benefit of keeping the last knit in a rib from being loose. Also Andrea try Norwegian purl as this also doesn't require shuttling your finger.

I've always loved Ysolda and am glad to hear her talk about using her platform to expand social good. As you explore different knitting styles I really encourage you to explore Continental knitting with an Eastern purl (combination) or both knits and purls mounted Eastern. It really evened up my gauge and feels very ergonomic. It's very easy to get used to knitting into the leading leg whether that's in the front or back Thanks for a great episode!

When I knit Portuguese style I've adapted the knit so that instead of doing it the normal Portuguese way I duck the left needle under the yarn on the near side which moves it to the far side where it is ready to knit. From there I "pick" it kind-of-continental style to knit the next st and the thumb can help too if it's something like the first st of a row or a K2tog. Then when I want to change to purl I just let the yarn come to the near side again - which it almost wants to do by itself due to the tension around the pin (or your neck). I find that with this way I can do Knit-to-Purl and vice-versa changes much quicker than any other method I've learned so far. I call my adapted Portuguese style "flick and pick" (as in you flick with the thumb for purl and pick continental for the knit). Don't say it the other way around - it sounds like an uncivilised way to clean your nose! :-D

BTW...the way you showed continental knitting (with your left index finger on the left needled) is EXACTLY how I do it. AND...I also continental purl that way too...this has the effect that for purl stitches the stitch that gets purled sits on the needle opposite to 'normal'. ie the left leg of the stitch gets put to the front and the right leg goes to the back. this then becomes super fast for both continental knit and purl....
@FruityKnitting
@FruityKnitting 7 лет назад
I'd like to see that way of purling, sounds interesting.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw your continental knitting. I learned "combination knitting" for ribbing in the round from an Ysolda blog post and it's my go to technique for hats and socks and makes the purls SO much easier. Here's the link: blog.ysolda.com/ysolda-blog/2014/6/12/technique-thursday-tighter-purls Thank you for another great podcast!! :)

I purl that way too, I believe it is named "eastern orientation." It is fast and easy plus I get a naturally tighter purl. I need to pay extra attention when i cable or do some other stitches - like SSK so my slants are correct but that is easy to figure out. Definitely when I need to purl a lot I always use the eastern style.

I think having another way of knitting is smart..I started as an English Knitter throwing my yarn then out of changing a way to knit developed a Flickering style which I still use..then a few years ago I hurt my right arm and stopped both knitting and crocheting. Slowly I started crocheting again and yes my arm would hurt, so I decided to knit in between working on my crochet project and started looking for a different way of knitting. I came across on You Tube a Norwegian style of knitting the knit stitch...I didn’t care for the way they did the Purl Stitch and my tension was different I found a video on a Russian style to knit the Purl Stitch so now I employ a variety of knitting styles and I experience less arm pain...

YAY YAY YAY for Ysolda talking about and designing waist shaping for men. I feel that too many jumpers are just a straight up (or down)...that is not quite flattering on a guy. Hopefully...also...I would add, about.. raglan shoulders...which IMHO also hang not so well on male (and many female) shoulders. I've been trying to figure out how to do a 'yoke pattern'...without the yoke shape....which also stretches pretty badly at the shoulders... Yarn has 'give' (or 'ease')...which helps...but the reality is, a yoke jumper does not have good and adequate tailored shaping. This admittedly hasn't stopped me from knitting my fair share of yokes...so it's a trade-off. But...I'm def going to invent a tailored yoke one of these days....

Have you tried the German purl method? I have a mis-aligned bone in my left hand (old racquet ball injury) and the Continental purl is not comfortable. But the German purl is easy for me and the tensioning is easier to manage. How goes the belt?
@judithkrishnappa121
@judithkrishnappa121 2 года назад
I think the problem of your muscle strain is the placement of your forefinger being in the air. Perhaps to maintain your tension, try wrapping the yarn around your little finger and keep the forefinger on the needle. Even better, norwegian style knitting that Arne teaches.

Whoever finds the "continental" method purling too difficult, go for combination knitting. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5WP2MlICOWU.html Here all methods are explained, and the combination method is (for me) the absolute easiest and fastest, especially if I knit 2k2p or something like that.

I had never hear that saying before about blue and green, but just from any casual glance in nature I’d say that it is utter hogwash. I can see certain combos coming out garishly, but that would be true of any color in the spectrum. Using blue and green together would be involved in more of an analagous or narrow gammut color scheme, as opposed to a contrasting color scheme or tertiary color scheme. Additionally, blue and green have the widest range of hue diversity that the human eye can visually interpret, as we have more receptors for colors in that range, which makes sense, given their abundance in nature. I assert that You could successfully knit a fair aisle jumper with 10 shades of blue and 10 shades of green. Then there’s all of the teals and turquoise’s, which folks often disagree about whether to call greens or blues respectively. Blue and green are fabulous together. Especially with the addition of a neutral, or pink! Just some thoughts. Love your podcast so much, going through and finding old episodes. So much value you have given us! I will become a patron soon when I can.
