Yu-Gi-Oh! Deck Building: The Big Picture 

hey dzeeff i am watching your videos for a good while and i really enjoy your content however i have one point of critsism: when you are talking about a basic combo (like the Zodiac combo in this Video), or a key Card in certain decks i would appreciate giving them a short explanation, because not everyone knows how these Cards and conbos work and what makes them so good. Otherwhise i really love your content, keep up the good work.

I gotta say, one of the oddest things for me to adapt to when coming back to play this game after what... 13 years? is the fact that damn near everyone plays with a 40-card deck. It was quite the change cause I was so used to playing with a 60-card deck, but the game's clearly gotten faster and faster over the years, and I was being asked to essentially cut a whole third of my deck.

Can we get a video talking about "Normal Summon" Monsters? Stuff Like Aleister the Invoker, Altergeist Marionetta, Magician's Rod, etc and how many of these normal summon monsters should be used in a conventional 40 card deck.

Doug you dummy, everyone knows the best way to build a deck is put as many good cards in as possible. A 400+ card deck is the bare minimum you should go for since you might need one of those good cards.

I was hoping for a video like this. It’s really nice to see an explanation of why something that seemed it wouldn’t work worked so well. Zoo in particular was fun for me because it was becoming the best deck right around when I started watching Yugitubers and it very much confused me. It also annoyed me a ton as I really liked the artwork and gimmicks, but it was way too expensive to pick up and destined for the ban list. Then when I was more seriously considering trying to get back into the game at the start of the Link era, I really liked the concept of both Trickstar and Weather Painters. Trickstar ended up being tier 1 and by then staples were scary expensive on their own. Weather Painters weren’t even rouge level and even they had a $25+ three of... Then Brandish was revealed, I absolutely loved the concept and was really hoping they were going to be good but not amazing... $90 Engages... and now that the prices are down, any ban list may end up killing the prices right after buying them.

Honestly I have so much issue with people prejudging archetypes. Theres a few channels that come to mind... I get that it's fun to analysis them but without full context it's not really helpful. So many people found salamangreats to be shit then they get a top in the ocg and everyone hyping salamangreat.

when zoodiacs came out i was a noob and thought they were bad because they have 0 ATK

I dunno if anyone remembers, but I remember when World Chalice were compared to Zoodiac (as far as competitive level). We knew them as "Stargrail" at the time. YGOrganization had shared an article in regards to one of those OCG events where they were able to get a further look at archtypes like Star Grail from COTD. A lot of people got hyped for them as they were our very first "hyper Link" archetype in the VRAINS era.

Always add upstart goblin to 60 card decks, because they are less consistent and upstart is a free draw, so it helps

its interesting to see the rank 4 XYZ engine replaced in every way by nightmares which gives everyone acess to removal only problem is the extra link effects for protection that i think we could have done without

I was 100% not expecting this to be about zoodiacs.

I really loved the insight of this video, but the thing that stood out the most for me was me just realizing how silly Diamond Dire Wolf's head looks, I hate how my brain works.

Very good video. I myself needed mich time to realise how powerful zoo was. At first a thought "well okay they can search, circle a bit and get a pop. why is it so hyped up?" But than I get the point. Cause you can access this loop each turn so easy and consistent its freaking op. And you missed the point in your video that so could play all these staple interruptions like strike, kaijus, handtraps etc. in a much bigger scale because their own combo is so easy too make. In short: with one starter card I can search, special 2 monsters from the deck, mill, loop, draw and pop and so my other 2-4 cards in hand could be an strike, ash, raigeki and forbidden chalice

I miss the old tool box rank four decks long before Zoodiacs. 101, Utopia and all that good stuff was the best Yugioh.

I loved full power zodiac format. The format was fun bc the mirror was very back and forth and I loved that you a can play any archetype and throw 3 rats in it and your deck could kinda contend

Xyz monsters were really good because most of them would just work and having the options available was just good like even if you were running a deck with nothing that benefits xyz or anything that directly helps you perform more xyz summons, having at least one xyz in your extra deck isn't going to hurt at all

I go thru this steps: -Set your mind in what strategy you want, full control, tiers, etc -Analyze the current game, as in the meta and such -Pick an archetype, taking in mind budget and side options -With that last one, what's the current budget you have, cause I know people that blew it off almost immediatly -Locate where can you get what you need plus other supplies, either internet and/or locals -If you have a store nearby, go frequently and know the people in there -Have fun whether you win all the time or lose all the time

what i struggle the most with deck building is finding what cards already exist that fit what i am working with.

This video got me thinking because I was discussing with a friend if Daigusto Emeral could come off the Banlist, because it doesn't sound that strong individually....

Man zoodiac is my favorite deck ever I really miss it, just need one drident back.

Those comments really remind of the Salamangreat "discourse" that's happening in YT comments lately: people are ignoring the broader picture of how consistent Salamangreat is to getting to its combos, and while the boards it makes may not be super amazing by like, Gouki standards, pretty much every combo not only goes +3-+5 but you get to recycle Salamangreat Gazelle in almost every single combo and have multiple disruptions and do the combo again next turn.

I’m curious as to how you would attempt a competitive build of lair of darkness, personally I would heavily focus on malefics, what do you think?

I mean you didn't even mention that the main deck Zoodiacs give the extra deck monsters negations for certain card types. That on top of everything else makes them a really interesting deck to play because the monsters are all about effects and are mostly pretty small

2018 taught me one valuable lesson, and that is there is a difference between a healthy game and a diverse game (no they're not always the same). 2018 we had multiple FTKs whether it's an actual FTK or an extra link. Diverse, but not healthy. 2017 we had most of the year full of Zoodiac monsters, but the actual gameplay was fun and grindy when you looked past the lack of diversity.

I still think Drident and Broadbull don't belong on the banlist when theres so much shit out there, also the limit 1 on the Ratpier is fucking insulting.

Another deck that is similar is Evil HERO Dark Gaia. When you look at the archetype it should be in, it has no synergy at all unless you put in a random rock type in there. Dark Gaia works better in a deck that ignores its archetype. You only need to pop in some good fiends and rock types that can help you out with negation, destruction or stalling. Caius and Grandmarg are great because of their effects and attack power with its fusion. You go with the rock Koa'ki Maru monsters they give you some nice utility effects. Also this deck is consistant because you can have 6 chances to summon Dark Gaia with 3 Dark Fusions and 3 dark Callings. add in some high attack fiends and some decent spell and trap cards and it starts to look better than the rest of the Evil HERO archetype because it is a bit more flexible with its strategies. It is a deck that has always worked for me.

But lair of darkness has time for cards to come out I know it was over Hyde but other cards coming out can make lair good

Trif Gaming: Full powered Zoo?

I checked prices zoodiac cards and ban list, and almost every card is not banned and they are very cheap (smth about 1,5$). Do you think it is a good budget deck? It's for sure not better than my favourite deck - paleozoic frogs but 50-100% cheaper than and I just want to start playing and hf with yugioh ;-;

I dont understand why some architype cards of now dead decks are still on the ban list. I can see if the card is too generic like with blackwing gofu. Or if the card would create degerate strategies that we want to keep out even if it means one less viable deck. But the banned zodiac monsters don't seem to fit that. Sure, full power zodiac might still be too strong for yugioh, but would bringing ratpier from 1 copy to 2 really skyrocket the deck from uselessness to broken? If nondegenerate decks arent doing well, why not unban as much as possible without making them busted?

This video made me realise broadbull is a chic. Its a joke amongst my freinds that i had to point out to ALOT of people that drident was female becuse somehow they missed that but i never really looked at broadbull. On her card it looks like pecks kinda but if you look at zoodiac combo you can see broadbulls chest sticking out rather clearly. Could i be wrong? sure But it honestly seems to be the case. It doesnt matter in the long run but its funny if you ask me that it went unnoticed.

Most overrated deck ever

I really hated zoo format when zoo was at full power but some of the other formats I hated a lot more. At the moment I like the current format compared to the other formats.
