In the manga, Yugi tributes Griffor and Kuriboh with the Black Luster Ritual. One soul of light and one of darkness. This opens the Gateway to Chaos. Then Yugi commands Gaia to “Charge into the black pits of Chaos! Let it suffuse you! And be granted absolute power!” Gaia then emerges as the Black Luster Soldier.
And of course because Gaia & Curse of Dragon are in Yugi's deck, they have to be fused with Dark Magician. Dark Calvery is Dark Magician wearing Gaia's armor riding his steed, and Dark Magician the Magical Dragon Knight is Dark Magician wearing Gaia's armor while riding Curse of Dragon
The Gaia archetype has always been interesting to me. The original monster was basically a massive clutch tool for Yugi back in Duelist Kingdom and its cool to see that aspect being represented in all future support. Its just a shame that, like Summoned Skull, Yugi basically dropped the card in favor of more Magician support and the God Cards later on.
@@jobejacobs62 Summoned Skull gives the same attack power for half the tributes. I think summoned skull should have been non-Yami Yugi's ace, or at least one of them.
FUN FACT: In the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga, in 1997, Gaia there Fierce Knight in its debut appearance was referred to as the "strongest card in the Magical Knight type", this was translated to English as the 'Warrior' type and was just regarded as weird quirk of the early manga. 24 years later in Yu-Gi-Oh Sevens and the Rush Duel game, Konami formally introduced the Magical Knight type, as a fully fledged type (granted its still Fusion Monster exclusive for now, but that will likely change at some point). The Magical Knight Type has not come to the main game yet, but when it does I hope we get retrains of Gaia because it is such an obscure fact.
It's going to be a painful fun fact since the Duel Links dataminers revealed the Paladin and Skysoldier type in place of the Magical Knight and Celestial Warrior type (tho we don't know which replace what.)
There isn’t just a connection between Gaia and Black Luster Solider. In the manga they alluded to how the two are actually one in the same. Hence why the two mention each other so much in their cards.
Honestly, BLS is an evolved version of Gaia just like Magician of Black Chaos is the new form of Dark Magician. Ironically, both BLS and MoBC are both Chaos monsters which is a Fusion of Light and Darkness. Both of Yugi's theme winning strategies involve: Fusion summoning and Ritual summoning. Gaia is a Fusion method, while BLS is a Ritual method. Dark Magician is a Fusion method, while MoBC is a Ritual method. Ironically, same goes for BEWD who can do both. But theres something that connects and brings Gaia/BLS, DM, & BEWD altogether: Its called Chaos (since DM is Dark and BEWD is Light), since they all have cards that interact with one another such as Ritual and Fusions. That's why we got cards like Dragon Master Knight, Magician of Chaos, Dark Cavalry, Chaos Form, etc. that mentions them or reoccurring Types (Dragon, Warrior, or Spellcaster) in the same text.
If that's true, then fusing BLS with BEUD to summon Dragon Master Knight *_(DMK)_* means he, Gaia, *_REALLY_* levels up in the world; From double lance wielding horseback mounted knight, to essentially the ultimate dragon rider.
Fun Fact: Soldier Gaia the Fierce Knight's artwork has him wearing armor that is similar to that of the Black Luster Soldier. This has produced a very popular fan theory that Gaia, with the help of the Curse of Dragon, obtains the powers of light and darkness and later becomes the Black Luster Soldier when he masters the powers of chaos.
Gaia might not have been Yugi's Go to Monster or even one of his most reliable, but Gaia was still a pretty solid bruiser and was the Muscle to Dark Magician's brains, who came in handy until he was replaced by Buster Blader.
Technically the reason that BLS and Gaia are connected is because in the manga BLS required 3 specific tributes to be summoned: a light monster, a dark monster, and Gaia
I like the Gaia archetype. The whole design with a guy charging in with two jousting lances seemed so cool. And then it fused into a dragon riding knight, I feel like that started me into the dragon-riding knight fandom
I LOVE you're archetype videos. Especially when you talk in detail about the designs and inspiration behind the cards. It made me develop a deep love for yugioh card art and lore.
10:39 In my opinion, the reason Lord Gaia the Fierce Knight Special Summons itself instead of Normal Summon without a tribute is because Gaia rides a dragon which is a Special entity, instead of a horse. Or if could also be that the Lord Gaia actually flies instead of moving on the ground, which is superior (since it also gains attack)
To add to Gaia's connection to Black Luster Soldier, in the original manga, Black Luster Ritual required Yugi to Tribute 2 monsters whose ATK combined equaled 1500 or more to turn Gaia into Black Luster Soldier. He Tributed Kuriboh and Griffore to do this. Dark Magic Ritual worked the same way but with Dark Magician.
@@pokeaca27I’m still waiting for it to have playable support. All Summoned Skull support is either unplayable and irrelevant, or only works with the Archfiend chess strategy (which Summoned Skull is useless in).
Given his eventual replacement by Buster Blader. Its funny that Yugi's sort of big warrior has a theme with dragons. Gaia was about working together with dragons and empowering yourself to face the oncoming challenge. Buster Blader was about putting Dragons as far into the negative as possible using your overwhelming strength to not give them a moment to breath. Not sure if there's a theme or message to pull from that. But now I just get the image of Buster seeing Gaia ride on Curse and just having that frown he had in the manga XD
Yeah, some people already mentioned this, but Black Luster Soldier is basically the same person as Gaia. Similarly, Magician of the Black Chaos is alluded to be the same dude as Dark Magician.
We need a “Fierce Steed” card which is a lv 3 beast monster that searches or summons out Gaia. As well as a dragon master knight retrain that’s part of the Gaia archetype.
In the early Yu-Gi-Oh games, ritual summoning was weird mainly because of cost value. You had a certain amount you couldn't go over and each card had a value with Ritual monsters being incredibly expensive at 255 but you can just tribute summon them. The way around this in the early games was to run the ritual spell, which only required you having a certain monster on the field and two tributes, with the required monster becoming the ritual monster. In this case, Gaia was needed on the field to use Black Luster Ritual. So there's another connection.
@blizz2748 dudes videos got me back to wanting to play the game myself lol so I understand where you're coming from plus dude just seems like a cool dude to hang out with
I know he's not specifically a "Gaia the fierce knight" card, but Skilled Blue Magician is Gaia support, and I'm sad he wasn't here I know he's a nothing card but his gimmick is kinda fun
I’ve used the Gaia cards in Duel Links, to good results. I never knew about the new Catapult Turtle. I always wished Gaia’s horse got a card or two, I always felt bad leaving him for a dragon.
if i recall correctly theres a deeper connection in the manga and stories behind the cards... that what the black luster ritual actually does transform gaia rather than sacrofice him.
Yugi using Catapult Turtle to launch Gaia the Dragon Champion towards the Castle’s ring and destroying drying his duel against Panik is one of the most absurd moments in Yugioh
Gaia Saber the lightning shadow was actually used in the anime by Playmaker before he got his Cyberse cards and he used it to otk a knight of Hanoi with limiter removal
I don't know why but for some reason when it comes to all of yugi's legacy support the gaia line up is oddly my favorite from a visual standpoint and I can not for the life of me figure out why.
I hope that the Ultimate-Magical Archtype can be explored one day, since some haven't been mentioned due to them not existing at the time (The Dark Magicians and Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon - I anticipate Master of Chaos will be featured in the BLS Archtype).
yugi's deck must have spawned the most archetypes of any yugioh anime characters. Dark magician, magician girl, kuriboh, black luster soldier, Gaia and curse of dragon, buster blader, silent arcblades and i probably missed something
15:59 Another fun fact that green lance is the one that shows in the final duel Yugi vs Atem when Atem use an equip spell to deal piercing battle damage
First Buster Blader, now its Gaia. Hopefully soon we'll get a gearfried video. It sucks their isnt any support cards for him. Just a lore of him going backwards to become stronger.
I remember pulling a lot of this, and being kind of surprised that guy I got support throughout the years when I got back into Yugioh seriously in the first few months of master duel being released.
It is interesting that all the counterparts including Gia Blaze are all mechanical in design, almost like someone saw fit to recreate the original legend.
I’d love to see a magic card that would work well with the Gaia archetype. Call it “Order of Gaia”, where by any cards of that archetype either gain an ATK/ DEF buff or as some sort of protection against magic/ trap cards
I know Gaia is the main guy but imagine if they made the horses and other dragons shown on the retrains separate monsters that support the archetype. Maybe by searching for a "Gaia" Spell/Trap or something that helps Warriors and other Dragon monsters
As a YGO Boomer that played from it's inception to around Flaming Eternity, I'm so bummed that iconic og cards like Gaia, Dark Magician, etc didn't get support for about 10+ yrs after I stopped playing. 😭😭
Can we all agree that the fact Curse Of Dragon sounded like a seagull in the anime of its battle cry is just absolutely perfect (and also extremely hilarious) 🤣
Respect the seagulls or they'll burn you alive. 😶 Also you'd better run if you see a little armored knight with a joust in his hand sitting on the back of one.
I find it funny how Force of the Sun Gaia could add an InferNoble Knights to your Hand up to the number of monsters that he had destroyed that turn. It very much like how the Link Three Nephthys Monster doesn’t care on what Rituals are needed for its Link Summon nor does its first effect cares of that either.
Another great video, one thing I wish they would do is similar to how we have Skilled Dark Magician to bring out Dark Magician, Skilled White Magician to bring out Buster Blader, Skilled Blue Magician to bring out Gaia the Fierce Knight, Skilled Red Magician to bring out Archfiend monsters (such as Summoned Skull since its now treated as an Archfiend card), & Skilled Brown Magician to bring out Kuriboh they should have a Skilled Gold or Skilled Yellow Magician to bring out Curse of Dragon.
ahhh this reminds me of the 3 Part Fusion in the Millennium World with Curse of Dragon, Mahad, and Dios. has Duos (Priest Seto's Main KA prior to Blue-Eyes) ever been printed? and if it were, would it fuse with Curse of Dragon or it's retrains?
In Brazilian Portuguese Dub they originally called the fusion "Gaia de Dragón Killer", "O Matador de Dragões". I always liked it more than the original
The Gaia/CoD archetype has gotta be one of my favorites in Yu-Gi-Oh. It makes me wish Konami would make a structure deck based around the archetype with a few BLS cards thrown in too. Just so I can get a bunch of them in one go and not have to basically go on a hunt online to get them card by card.
What other iconic monsters, or personal favourites of yours, would you love to see get a fusion? I'd appreciate a Dark Magician/Girl get a fusion with Summoned Skull, or a fusion form for Wingweaver
The following archetype is something I found out through master duel. It goes well with BLS archetype. Since they are offshoot of yami Yugi’s deck the relationship with the chaos.
I've gotten into these videos a lot recently, they're very well made, entertaining and rewatchable. Good stuff man. It would be nice at some point to see you cover some lesser known but cool and forgotten archetypes that could use some modern support, like what about Koaki Meiru or Chemicritter or X-Saber
At first I was never a fan of Gaia or really dark magician I’ve always felt they were lacking but as I got older I did realize how good and cool they are.
Alright so we got a Gaia Synchro monster of the Earth, and a Gaia Synchro of the Sun, and both have them have an upgraded fusion form. We gonna get a Moon Gaia as well eventually, maybe it be water attribute? Basically what the Bujin Archtype did, minus the Susanno which was Storms, not Earth.
They should make some fusion monsters with a Curse Of Dragon monster and a Warrior monster, Or a fusion monster that's either two Gaia The Fierce Knight monsters or two Curse Of Dragon monsters.
I'm still waiting for an Archetype trivia on the Rokket, Borrel, and Topologic archetypes Note: Borrel and Topologic are archetype's primary made up of Link Monsters
Wow I had no idea those final two cards existed! Finally Gaia as some counter measures to keep him in the fight. I'll defiantly be remodeling my deck to include them.
13:20 yeah I remember using it as a last resort against Tristan in dueling nexus as I had no other way to get over his number 96 and couldn't beat him fast enough to prevent its summon (i was really bad at yugioh back then)
I've had this idea for a reboot of the og series for a while. What if we go through the same arcs( duelist Kingdom, battle city, waking the dragons if they feel like it etc) but every time we move to a new arc or if yugi wants to be tricky, he switches up his deck, using the modern versions of these cards? For example in duelist Kingdom let's say yugi use the Gaia deck for the first round of the tournament but during the finals he switches to a black luster solder deck. He can still include some of his dark magician cards since that's his ace and so we can still have moments like dark sage vs Joey. Then in battle city yugi will perhaps alternate between using his magnet warriors and the new chimera deck?( For the sake of this idea let's just say you are allowed to bring two decks to the tournament for whatever reason). Then once yugi gets Slifer he switches to the card knights to support Slifer. And so on for each arc ending with atem favoring a dark magician deck and little yugi using a silent magician or gandora deck. As for kaiba he will always use bkue eyes but unlike yugi constantly switching decks and constantly changing his strategies, kaiba will instead I ly use blue eyes but will continue to add new blue eyes support as the series goes on in an attempt to defeat yugi by making his dragons stronger with the exception being in duelist Kingdom where he simply uses his blue eyes deck as a means to get obelisk on board.
I like them connecting the Turtle to Gaia because of that one scene but Artillery Turtle does not power Dragon Champion upin any way or destroy defending monsters, or allow Dragon Champion to pierce
Black luster soldier is Gaia, like the same person, in the manga gaia goes through the gates of chaos and emerges as black lister soldier, that’s the relation
I don't think Skilled Blue Magician was mentioned. It basically does the same as Skilled Dark Magician just for Gaia the fierce knight instead of dark magician
"Wondering why I didn't mention cards like beginning of heaven and earth or gateway of chaos? Well that's because I will put them in THIS video right here the Black Luster Soldier video :D" Cut to Sam holding a 3 hours vid on the Rush Duel world in Duel Links. Good one Sam I almost fell for it too XD
When you see that field spell hit the board, be prepared for a pilot who has mastered the OTK style. The Gaia archetype isn’t staying around for a lot of turns, it is there to break a board and leave the rest in ruins. It’s a fantastic rogue option that can and will trip people up
TGS anime you forgot to mention gaia knight the force of earth. Even if it doesn't count as a part of the archetype it should have at least gotten an honourable mention.
I still don't get why Curse of Dragon is named like that. When I try to understand the phrase "curse of dragon," I think of it as if it's a curse inflicted by a dragon. And that name has more emphasis on it being a curse instead of being a dragon. So it sounds more like a spell than a monster. At first, I thought it was just some weird English translation. But it's literally just called Curse of Dragon in Japanese as well. Maybe the Japanese name was really supposed to convey that it's a cursed dragon but they got the English words wrong in the process. That's probably why Curse of Dragon, the Cursed Dragon is named like that. Curse of Dragon has become so iconic that it became the actual name of that specific dragon despite it not making any sense. And it just so happens that Curse of Dragon is also cursed.
I really wish konami would retcon Normal monsters, errata the rules so that Normals no longer require tributes to be summoned. They’d be no longer be a detrament when ran, and more of an upgrade when you needed to summon them in decks that required them, the best examples being Blue eyes, and Dark Magician.
