The interesting issue here is if the pharaoh didn't play that card it would have been any ordinary game and once it was over no one would have lost anything.
I love his instant regret when he plays the card “What have I done..!?” I remember the first time I watched this episode as a kid I couldn’t wait to see the next episode.
@@pingaspearce9403 This wasn't one of those times. He says that but then carries on as normal in the dub which never made any sense. The sub was trying to show that Yami Yugi did have a darker side to him, whereas the dub did everything they could to make him a faultless superhero whose shortcomings were purely due to orchicalcos mind control.
For everyone asking why he played the Seal because he literally had no reason to, that's the point. This entire duel was basically set up with that in mind. Rafael proved that even Atem had evil/darkness/rage inside him deep down. There wasn't any stakes involved until the card was played. Had he used De-Fusion as he was meant to, Timaeus would have been freed.
He couldn't have played defusion since the crystal around dark magician Girl cancels targeting In fact. He literally could not win without the seal of oricalcos He just made a misplay in the duel and that's why he lost if he had used catapult turtles effect to it's fullest he would have won But the plot demanded he lost so yeah. Also he could've just lost and not lost his soul..
@@jimmysanders505 Actually, Atem was about to do it, but Yugi made him stop. And you seem to be glossing over the fact that Kaiba would have straight up died if Atem finished him.
Yes. The darkest and most depressing for sure. EVERYONE was pushed to their absolute limit, some beyond them. Even the Pharaoh was corrupted at one point. Definitely my favorite season by far. The fact it’s filler means nothing to me.
This scene with the orichcalos theme gives me goosebumps every single time. Me as a kid back in the day and even as an adult, I was shocked Yami did that.
Well, if it wasn't for people asking Takahashi to transform everything in cards, this arc and others wouldn't even be about cards in first place, so maybe Doma arc would born in another way with more worthy and really seriously dangerous games.
I don't know what would've been more awkward; Joey defeating Marik before he lost consciousness or Yami losing to Rafael without using the Seal of Orichalcos. The plot could never progress in either scenario.
Good point but if Yami lost to Rafael without playing the seal of orichalcos no soul would’ve been taken mission failed and Rafael would’ve definitely let Yami get in the helicopter and not leave him stranded in the place where they dueled and everyone moves on
I think they should have kept Yami Yugi lost his soul and let little Yugi get his arc and finish the arc without the pharaoh until the final battle at least .it would be a massive step up for his character and tht one episode where it seemed like anime might flip was extra special but they ruin it with little Yugi stepping in getting his soul taken away. if they had done it I would have Ben really hooked for more episodes but I kind of felt deflated and not as hyped when little Yugi got his soul taken.
@@wingedhussar1453 looking back that would've been a freaking GREAT idea!!! What a mix up, there is sooo much you can do with that. Yugi being an underdog and forced to now figure this out etc etc.
In a way I think the Oricalcos was actually kind of revealing an evil of Atem here. Atem is not used to loosing. He never looses. And the thing is that when people loose games a lot they get kinda used to it. So Atem was put in a situation where he might actually loose. Thus his heart was filled with pride. Pride was his downfall. This showed that for a moment Atem cared more about not loosing the game then his friends and safety. This becomes an inner demon that he needs to face. There was not even any stakes aside from maybe loosing his title of king of games.
acuallty atem lost like 3 times... one to kaiba even though atem just surrenders, Pegasus, and now yugi. and of course the dude with the guardian cards. so four times.
@@ladyriethegoldendelmo5441 Fair point, but still. Atem is not used to Losing. He had so much pride he was afraid of loosing he was willing to be his friends souls and his on the line just to win a casual duel with no stakes other then loosing his title. So in a way the Oricalos was actually kinda right about him.
@@knellycornnan5132 yea true. however... I mean yes I can see why he did it. but then again he wasnt going to win even with the seal. cause the dragon wouldnt listen to atem for a while. not sure how atem got the dragon trust back. had he not play the seal. yes he would had lost anyways but at least not lose yugi. but then again atem only human. if we had to be honest a lot of us would do what he did. so I cant blame him 100 percent lol
@@makwieli so you would start with the regular yugioh series, then you would watch Gx and then yugioh zexal. you can watch yugioh 5ds and and Arc-V but i wasn’t a big fan of the two
"Pharao, you mustn't play the Seal of Orichalcos" "Why would I do this?" "You're right, there's nothing at stake even if you lose" "Wait, I may actually lose?!" "Well, Yes, it doesn't look so good, but as I've said, there's nothing..." "Screw you Raphael, you totally forced me to play the Seal of Orichalcos against my will!"
Fr even my mom was glue to this episode and she didn't even watch yugioh it went to commercials and she went to the kitchen soon as it came back on she ran to the living room with a pack of frozen chicken in her hands.😂
I was shook then they ruin it with little Yugi getting his soul taken instead not the least Intresting as I didn't care for little Yugi at tht point anyway
I remember this like it was yesterday 8am on Kids WB and the episode ended, I had to wake up early the week after because THE PHAROAH PLAYED THE SEAL OF ORICHALCOS!!!
Oh yeah. I remember when I first watched this episode. I literally kept saying, "Yami, don't play that card!" and then when he did, I said, "Yami!!!" this moment shook me and when Yami had that mad look with the Orichalcos sign on his head, I had goosebumps all over my body and shivers down my spine
I love the fact that he says he has no options....and literally has De-Fusion in his hand with a fusion monster on the field. At the very least it was an option.
@@JCool123 That is interesting to ponder. We were shown the result with Mai falling out of the elevator without her soul. But tht was all we saw. So I will share my head-canon instead. Both Mai and Raphael had powerful decks and were both very experienced at tht point. Yet Mai's emotional state was unbalanced due to feelings towards Joey and a desire for revenge. Wheras Raphael was completely calm and was simply aiming to stop Mai. So I would imagine tht Mai played the Seal of Orichalcos to start. With the intention of trying to gain an early advantage. She may well hav taken out Guardian Eatos with Harpy Lady Phoenix Formation. Thinking tht was Raphael's greatest threat. Except Raphael would be prepared with Guardian Dreadscythe. Which I bet only Dartz was also aware was in his deck. Raphael would use his Dreadscythe's exceptionally high attack power with its equip card to pwn Mai. Much to her surprise. After which Raphael staged Mai's body so she would fall out of the elevator when Yami Yugi arrived. If so, that would be a case of auto-losing after playing the Seal of Orichalcos lol.
Keep I mind the Pharoh never loses so for him to lose here would crush his pride. So in order to defend it he essentially made a deal with the devil to beat Raphael
@@ajarofpickles2826 I honestly just think having the card in your deck corrupts you. Yami wasn't himself when he played it, which is why he regretted it instantly. He didn't even know why he played it 😢
This is the biggest mistakes for Atem to using Orichalcos seal in his duel with Rafael, knowing that it's the only way to win the duel against Rafael, which has a pure soul without darkness. Unfortunately, Atem fell into darkness in his heart and at the end, he loses his duel. As a result, Yugi's soul is taken instead.
he did he tricked him into playing that card he put him in a position were playing that card was the only option or he would loose. Dude was the only person to beat yugi at his own game and he would have shredded Kiba in a duel.
@@videogollumer Yeah but in this duel, he has those glowing eyes like season 0. Season 0 Pharaoh was cruel, but he did it with a smile on his face. Weevil took him to a different level of anger.
Atem showed a level of ruthlessness to win that would have made Seth Kaiba impressed. This decision was even crazier than Kaiba threatening suicide even though Kaiba knew Yugi well enough to know he would commit to saving Mokuba in his face-off with Pegasus.
I'm honestly surprised Dan Green did not get this best voice acting performance award for this super interesting Seal of Orichalcos storyline. Although it looks out of character that Pharoah would do these such darkest crimes he's ever committed, however, it's pretty cool to see Pharoah to first time ever showing off his darkness side as if he might possibly turn out to be an "evil Pharoah" after all as the rumors point out, but then realized his errors by the time it's too late, and he even first few times showed off his tears of despair. It's also great to see him become his own person for awhile (other than to keep hiding behind someone else's vessel) by developing emotion, voicing his inner thoughts, conquering his own darkness through depressing state, owning up his fatal mistake that costed Yugi's soul, show more of his vulnerability side, and to develop his resolve.
I Wish Seto Kabia could have seen this Battle i could only imagine the look on Seto Kabia face if he Saw this it would have Been Priceless Seto Kabia and Yami have always and always will Be my 2 favorite characters
@@ernestw2474 that's possible now.Except he hasn't done it yet.And of course,Kaiba knows about Yami losing. He was acting as if they made a promise to each other lmao
Sad fact is after he activated the orichalcos, he activated “Hand Control” which was already in his hand so he never needed the orichalcos to turn the duel around but that card blinded him
For anyone saying he could have just not played the card, or any reason he could have won the duel, Yugi CLEARLY stated that the card is affecting Yami's mind before he even played it! Yugi is INSIDE his mind; he KNOWS what's going on in there! PLEASE, PAY ATTENTION, PEOPLE!!!
He only says that in the dub. In the original japanese, he just says that Raphael is waiting for it to happen. Infact, this actually means the opposite of this dialogue. The Orichalcos' influence is seemingly not even strong enough for Yugi to note(or potentially even notice), so Yami could have easily denied it if he really wanted to.
When I first saw this episode I was surprised to see Atem activate the Seal of Orichalcos but I still supported him and it always kind of freaks me out with how big that damn seal is on his forehead like damn....
We know what was making the Pharoah play that card it wasn't himself or the card it was the stone around his neck that was making him play it you all did see him strangely when he was touching it did you
The stone wasn’t the sole purpose of why he played it. yes it was a factor, but the truth is that the pharaoh craved victory and power. He had full pride and confidence in himself and the stone played on those traits. These which make up the pharaoh’s darkness was exploited in this duel by Raphael, the stone, and the pharaoh himself
@@jjack3186 at the very beginning when got it from that big low life jerk he was in a tragic shock when he look and he didn't really like it one bit but besides did the pharaoh play card exchange to get any cards from Raphael Jack no he didn't it was the other way around Raphael made sure there were none but one card in each other hand to make sure the pharaoh didn't get an alternated chance to not pick that evil card so re watch careful besides later on weaker yugi play it too and in case if he was on the field with that rotten stone around his neck instead of the pharaoh he would have played it way easier than him the only reason why didn't affected weaker yugi is because he was on the duelling field only that's why he tried stop early because he was a spirit at that point not the fresh and blood being remember the pharaoh was in control of the body at time not him and besides at least the duel wasn't really a complete success for the bad guys Jack remember Dartz and cruel brutal minions main target was the pharaoh remember but they didn't get him yeah the won they won the fight in this scene but they failed to get the target because little yugi was too weak to relived the evil great beast that's the dragon series didn't end because the villains didn't win not yet so far and the only person that can save the world in this danger is the pharaoh himself because he was the chosen one for the eye of Timaeus not weak little yugi because the only reason he can play him as well is because they share the same body remember so your wrong all the way about the pharaoh Jack because remember what every darkness is in him it's in weak little yugi too sorry sir
This is one episode that really broke my heart as a kid and even as a grown-up today I absolutely will not watch this episode just because it broke my heart so much to see the pharaoh give into his anger
Yami: I must win this childrens card game... Yugi: Why there are no stakes on the line in this duel... Only bragging right... at best.... Yami: Bragging rights???....................... I must Win this childrens card game whatever the price!!!.... and people say Seto Kaiba is petty guy.... Which he is but Yami is no better..
The Dartz arc was one of my favorite all time of all arcs counting Dragonball & OPM arcs I've seen....I really loved that they exposed Yami weaknesses and he lost fair and square. I was shocked that Saturday that He actually lost but loved it because it was DIFFERENT. I also like how they made Kaiba lose as well. Overall great arc even though it was filler....the side characters also had cool decks!
What will happen if Kaiba were in Pharaoh's position? Would he fall for Rachael's trick, get brainwashed, and have his own dark side exposed, or will he resist using the evil card?
It's one of the only moments anime Card of Sanctity could've but doesn't help Yugi comeback if not for Yami Yugi's neglect to de-fusion and card destruction. Somewhat wished there were more draw moments like that in Yu-Gi-Oh where huge draws don't always pay off.
Yami: i’m out of options. I must play the seal of orichalcos. Me after looking at his hand even as a kid: of course if you play bricks you are bound to be out of options eventually
