Welcome to… I'm not sure what this is, but welcome to that ! Be ready to see a lot of things you won't understand. The game _technically_ has a something akin to ending, but I wouldn't really call that a goal to work toward (I don't even remember how I got to it). The game really ends when you feel like putting it down.

Oh, I'm already seeing many things I don't understand xD and fair enough, we'll see how far I get I guess!

To answer your question, there is indeed an ending. But there’s a very slim chance you’ll reach it on your own.

Yeah, now that I have a better idea of how the game is structured, I'm starting to get that impression xD

7:42 - This game has a proper ending 10:43 - A lot of games, actually. But how much it was influenced can vary, of course. Examples are: Doki Doki Literatura Club, One Shot, OMORI, Undertale, and the Lisa series

...Not to mention the literal hundreds, maybe even thousands, of fangames it's inspired.

Good to know!! And I can see it inspiring the style for OneShot, but Doki Doki is a bit of a surprise, idk if I would have guessed that one.

Ohohohoho? If ever was a game that could spark theorizing, it’s this one! I’m a little late to the party, but I’m sure I can catch up! This’ll be great to watch while eating or doing laundry :D

You're fine, I hope you're enjoying it!! Theorizing is a bit hard when there's no story, but figuring out the character can be fun!

Woah! We're doing this one now? Epic!!!! A very unique game, one of a kind and inspiration for many great games that followed! And a very elusive developer whose only vague interview was with Toby Fox himself! (As far as I know). This game is very old, but the English translation is quite recent in comparison! And yes, there is an ending and a goal! The games this inspired that I know of so far are games like Undertale and Omori, and spawned fangames like Yume 2kki which is just as popular as the original game, if not more! I was dressed as the main character of Yume Nikki for the last Anime Boston convention and spotted like 3 other people in the same cosplay, lol.

Yep, it was requested, it popped up on the wheel, and now it's here!! That's super interesting about the dev, maybe there's a lot more mystery surrounding this game than I originally thought. And yeah, the Steam page says it released in 2015, but I think I saw somewhere that the original released in 2004? So I guess this would be the game's 20th anniversary if that's the case. Some pretty ironic timing right there lol. I definitely see the Omori inspirations. Undertale is a bit harder to see, but some of the creature designs and the overall vibes do feel a bit similar. And that's cool that people still love this game enough to cosplay it!! It's so fascinating to me that this game has had such a huge impact on the indie gaming landscape.

I know nothing about this game but it looks awesome. I am getting strong Omori vibes from the Dreamland or headspace.
@HollyfromtheHollow
@HollyfromtheHollow 24 дня назад
...Probably because parts of that (absolutely Blackspace specifically, also the whole "dreaming hikikomori" thing) were _directly inspired by Yume Nikki,_ like most modern famous RPGs.

As a game studies enthusiast, I apparently have quite a knowledge gap to fill, hearing how influential this game was. Excited for how this will turn out! The beds at 21:34 drive me crazy already. My indie game brain immediately went "This is a code!", but it's neither morse code, because that doesn't have 8-signal-long letters, nor binary, because that only has eight digit long letters... do you have any idea Leo? Can others tell me if I'm looking for codes that don't exist? XD

Yeah, I've vaguely heard of this game, but I know very little about it, so it's a very new experience for the both of us then!! I tried typing out the numbers on the keypad, and well, you saw the results of that lol. With this game, I genuinely can't tell if there's any rhyme or reason to the majority of the environmental elements.

Yume Nikki!! I really love the game, it was very influencial to me with some of the things i like, i remember playing it as a child and being very scared of how weird everything was but now the weirdness feels comforting, it really feels like a dream. I played it quite a bit but still didn't get to the ending, I have not read a guide and to reach it very specific things needs to be done so don't feel pressured into trying to reach it if you don't find it! to me yume nikki is more about how you feel playing it, more as an experience as others have said.
@AxiomArchives

Yeah, I can imagine this game would leave quite an impact if you played it as a child. The surreal nature of it comes through in every aspect. I appreciate not being pressured, and I'll keep that in mind as I continue to play! I feel like this could be an incredibly short let's play if I wanted it to be lol, depending on how much of the experience I'm willing/able to see. So we'll see what happens!!

I don't know if yume nikki inspired toby fox in some kind of way but I do know that toby fox is the only person to have ever done an interview with the creator of yume nikki, kikiyama, more than a decade later after the release of yume nikki

I've heard! That's honestly kinda cool that there's so much mystery around the dev of this game.

...Yume Nikki is a very fascinating little thing. If you know where to look, you can end it very quickly. But it's easy to get lost in. Fun, even, with what can be hidden. Excited to see where you wander. ...although, personally, I find more enjoyment out of it's many fan-works. I'd love to see you play some of those. After this. Like .Flow, Collective Unconscious, Yume 2kki... They all take these concepts in such _fascinating_ new directions. Yume Nikki feels more like a tech demo, in comparison, but the others... ...I'd love to see you experience them.
@AxiomArchives
@AxiomArchives 23 дня назад
There is certainly a lot of wandering coming xD at the very least, I'm intrigued by what I'm seeing, even if it leaves me not quite knowing what to say sometimes. I typically don't play fan games on the channel, but if people want to see them, I'll look into them! And I see what you mean about it feeling like a tech demo, with it not having a whole lot going on at a surface level (apart from the visuals of course).

It is extremely unsettling lol. Something tells me that the secrets are hiding pretty deep below the surface, so I'm gonna have to be prepared to dig.

This game is definitely more of a surreal art piece than an actual game, and it can certainly be tedious, boring, or confusing for some people, but I’m hoping that you stick around to see what the game has to offer since it has some really unique visuals that you never see in other games
@HollyfromtheHollow
@HollyfromtheHollow 24 дня назад
...Yeah, that's why I prefer it's fanworks. As I've said, Yume Nikki feels more like a conceptual tech demo than a legit game, or full on experience. It's never felt really complete, and even Kikiyama feels that way. Many fanworks take that incompleteness and fill it in their own interesting ways, and with most being bigger than Nikki, many fan favorites dramatically so, whether in scope or by virtue of just being fucking labyrinthian. It's great.
@AxiomArchives
@AxiomArchives 23 дня назад
I definitely plan on sticking around for sure!! I'm extremely curious about where this could lead. I wonder how far I can get on my own, and how long it'll take me to get to a point where I need to look up a guide lol.
