@@BBQcheese It was a great exchange, but tbh I just bought Sekiro to replay and gather footage for other videos, and I enjoyed the Genichiro fight so much I decided to throw together a quick video on him.
Genichiro is where Sekiro clicked for me and he's EASILY my favorite boss in sekiro and an easy top 5 in all soulsborne. Not to mention the amazing voice acting by Kenjiro Tsuda, especially in the final cutscene.
great video i never look at genichiro that way, when i think about it, except his frame perfect 5e hit in his signature combo, he has no flaw that make this boss boring, a super rare thing in from soft game
After this boss I learned the game and never got stuck on a boss for more than 10 tries. Owl father was the only boss that switched things up and got me stuck, but I beat isshin in 6 tries because of Genichiro teaching me the mechanics. I wish ER had a similar boss that taught the mechanics of that game but I guess it wouldn’t make sense as melee only isn’t the only way to play the game.
I just want to say I'm so glad that you've stuck around even though you don't love DS3. I think it's great that we can have respectful differences but still celebrate the things we share!
Great insight. I think you should do research as to why or why not this combat system would work for PvP. I think it would be interesting to see how From Software could have made it into if they wanted to do a PVP in Sekiro.
The first fight with him is an introduction to Sekiro's 1v1 combat; it's also a warning of sorts, that this game will be quite difficult at times. In the second fight you're expected to kick his ass. It is the perfect progression arc to get your feet wet, as well as hungry for more boss kills. It's great because player progression is made congruent with story/character development.
Honestly I think my opinion of a lot of bosses have also been unfairly tinted by rage. Specifically for Dancer and to a lesser extent for Kalameet. Good insights
I like how he is a test of skill, and the inner fight is a test of mastery, and the final fight with isshin is a proof of strength, hes used perfectly narratively and as a showcase of your skill
The giant misconception about Sekiro is that you attack to deal health damage, you deflect to deal posture damage, and these are separate paths to victory. In fact, attacking deals both. Or, if the opponent blocks, attacking deals ONLY posture damage. And Geni blocks a lot. So it's a great way to demonstrate that you can and should attack a lot, even if you're having zero effect on his HP.
I don't know if i just got lucky but genichiro was pretty underwhelming for me. I'm currently playing sekiro and I'm pretty bad at the game. I got stuck at a lot of bosses before genichiro, like lady butterfly, corrupted monk, etc, some of which took me close to 100 tries to do, but when i got to genichiro, i prepared to get absolutely rolled when i saw the cut scene, but then defeated him on my 3rd try (Note i havent looked at any guided to the bosses i haven't defeated yet)
I actually have a video about this very topic, but basically I think Lady Butterfly teaches the same combat lessons as Genichiro, so if you beat her first, it makes sense that Genichiro wasn't a big roadblock for you!
