Jack Ward, also known as Jack Sparrow, was an English pirate who converted to Islam, adopting the name Yusuf Reis. Born around 1553 in Kent, he began as a fisherman before becoming a privateer against the Spanish Armada. When James I ended the war with Spain, Ward continued pirating without a license.
Forced into naval service, he served on the Lion's Whelp. Later, he turned his ship into a powerful warship and continued piracy in the Mediterranean. In 1607, he sought a pardon from James I, denied due to tensions with Venice. Finding refuge in Tunisia, he converted to Islam and took the name Yusuf Reis.
Known for his ax in battle, Ward practiced polygamy and had two wives. His conversion was dramatized in the play "A Christian Turned Turk." He retired around 1612 to teach navigation and gunnery. He lived comfortably in Tunisia until his death in 1622 at age 70.
