This material, for anyone playing these works, is simply priceless These are all works that I have played, possibly given to me when I was too young for what Lefébure asks for in Pas sur la neige. The works are full of intricacies and hidden notes. No two pianists play them the same. Saw and heard Samson François on this as well. Just amazing to watch and to listen to. [10:33] C'est très bon. C'est très bon. C'est très bon. C'est très musical. C'est très bien senti. C'est très bien. Mais, n'est-ce pas ? Cette oeuvre-là, c'est comme le "chanson de Billitis", était un peu particulière. Je crois qu'il y a, malgré tout, quelque chose de lui-même. Mais, en fait, "Les pas sur la neige", qu'est-ce que ça veut dire ? Ces pas sur la neige lui suggère un souvenir. Pour moi, il faut jouer un souvenir, vous comprennez ? Les pas sur la neige lui rappelle, peut-être, quelqu'un qui est parti, qui a laissé des pas. N'est-ce pas ? Et, il y a toujours chez Debussy --, c'est pourquoi il ne faut pas jouer --. Il faut jouer avec une grande intensité, mais au-desous. C'est à dire que ça ne peut pas être comme chez Beethoven. Le maximum de l'intensité expressive, mais d'une intensité interièure qu'est en seul filtré, transposé par un écran. Il y a un écran protectère. Il ne veut pas lui se mettre en scène. Les oeuvres de cette ordre-là sont très rare chez Debussy. Il était anti-Wagnerian, anti-romantique. Mais à mon avis, le sentiment profond de Debussy, il n'étais pas d'une fois religieuse, mais il avait le sentiment profond de la nature. Oh, quand on a le sentiment profond de la nature, on a tout même le sense religieux, parce qu'on sogne: qu'est-ce que c'est ce que nous environnent ? Ce ciel qui est là... ces étoiles, eh... ce vent... tous ces elements... Comment [pouvez nous] pouvons nous les rattacher à quelque chose de positif et de cientifique ? Et il y avait au plus haut dégré cette impression du mystère de la nature. Il y a toujours ça chez Debussy. D'abord il y a ce Ré Mi Mi Fa que peintent le paisage glacé, que doit être implacable, n'est-ce pas ? Et puis, voyez-vous cette --, c'est "expressive et tendre". C'est ça qu'est comme un souvenir, le passage en Ré-bemol. Vous la veut jouer. Remarquer, là il y a certainement une intensité, d'ailleurs, c'est extremement ardi comme l'harmonie. Les harmonies sont très belles, n'est-ce pas ? C'est extremement moderne déjà, n'est-ce pas ? Alors, là il faut vraiment donner tout ce qu'on peut. Mais, le début tout à fait discret: ré mi... mi fa...
quite wonderful......understands Debussy deeply......"des pas," though is marked at 40 per beat......she amps it. There's also a huge amount of Debussy indications that she ...doesn't pay attention to, and D was very scrupulous about his detailed indications
The name of the piece she plays at the end is "Jardins sous la pluie", taken from the set of three pieces for piano composed by Debussy in 1903 and called "Estampes".

This is a very good masterclass. The only thing I don't agree with is this argument that because Debussy was attracted to nature, that he was therefore in some way Religious. She's making the argument that one cannot be enamored by the mystery of nature without there being some sort of Religious component, because one cannot have a "scientific" passion for nature. That is, I feel, her personal interpretation and is actually quite wrong. If you listen to scientists like Richard Feynman, Neil Degrasse Tyson or Carl Sagan, they speak of this marvel they feel toward nature, precisely because of their scientific point of view about how nature works. So this whole argument that a marvel toward nature cannot be scientific, and that it can only be religious, is her own personal interpretation, but I don't think that's correct.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Right, well, again I disagree that "There's some religious within nature itself". To her, maybe. Not to me and a lot of other people. Just because she can't help herself from seeing nature from the Religious prism, doesn't mean that that's true for everyone else.

I admire her as a person but this rendition of Jardins sous la pluie made me feel uncomfortable. She played it with a percussive tone that reminded me of hail stones rather than rainfall. There's no accounting for taste, I guess.
part of the problem was how the mic was placed, but the sound should be sharp crisp and crystalline ‘cause violent rain has a percussive ( somewhat ) type of sound to it.
